I've always openned the door to them because I want to be polite.

I've opened my door a few months ago and I was really welcoming thinking of how if they are christians then they are brothers and sisters so I should treat them as family. At the time I didn't really know what made them different. After reading a pamphlets now I know. They are not christians. Meaning, they do not believe Christ is God. They challenged me for a discussion on why I believe Jesus is God, hinting that i misunderstand the bible. They have been polite but they have now given me a bigger booklet. I was going to open it and read about what it says about Jesus but i read about 2 sentences and closed the booklet back. If they have heretic teachings about Jesus, then I don't want to read about it. I would be comfortable reading the bible and then coming up with a conclusion but I feel uncomfortable reading their materials first and then reading their specified verses. I consider that going with the bible as a base is what is best, so confusions can be avoided. I feel uncomfortable about having further discussions with them yet I do not want them to go before I could at least say why Jesus is God according to the bible. I would like to ask if you could pray for me so the Holy Spirit would speak through me and protect me from false teachings and ideas.

The other thing that worries me is that I think them visiting me is not part of their monthly rounds around the neighborhood. I'm pretty sure they come around just to see me. They seem to come by car. I guess I'm an evengalising project now :s Please pray that they will go quietly and respectfully when I tell them I no longer want them to come and debate Jesus' fully divine /nature person.

Any advice is appreciated too. Thank you.

Ps: as I thought of a way to discuss Jesus and the arguments and verses I wanted to put forward I decided to not go to the bible with a preconceived idea of who Jesus is but to let the bible speak to me. During my time of prayer, I was reading Isaiah, not meaning to find specific verses, and then came across chapter 43:10-14 which says:
"...that you may know and believe me and understand that I am he. Before me no god was formed, nor shall there be any after me.
11 I, I am the LORD, and besides me there is no savior.
12 I declared and saved and proclaimed, when there was no strange god among you; and you are my witnesses," declares the LORD, "and I am God.
13 Also henceforth I am he; there is none who can deliver from my hand; I work, and who can turn it back?"
14 Thus says the LORD, your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel..."

After reading this I understood that this was God's answer and I cried and said My Lord, my God. It felt like it was the first time that I fully understood that God/Jesus are/is My Lord AND my God!
I feel like this scripture is enough to give to the JW that are coming to see me. If they can't see that there is no other God then there is not much else to show them. If God says there will be no other God after me then why would Jesus be another God and not God? Anyway, I had to get that out of my chest :) Thanks for reading and for your prayers. Be blessed.

UPDATE for those interested:
She came today and asked me if I had read their documentations and if I thought about Jesus being 'a God'. I was going to just let it slide and wait for next time to talk to them but she started talking about 'Jehovah's name and how it's hidden' so my blood boiled a little...from 'righteous anger' I hope...

So, I decided to clearly let her know that I was not going to debate Jesus being God. I showed her Isaiah 43 where God says he is the only Saviour, the only God and the only redeemer and told her that based on that, and on the fact that God will not give his glory to another, Jesus can only be God. Especially God clearly says 'before me no God was formed nor shall there be after me' After that, it became a heated discussion, I tried my best to be very polite. You know when Jesus chased the merchants from the temple? That's a bit how I'd describe how I was in terms of my speech, I did not chase her out of my yard :) I just couldn't let any lies be uttered and agreed upon!

She came up with a whole lot more arguments and verses and it just annoyed me. I am happy though because I would not deny Jesus! And I said "Jesus is my Lord and my God" :D Glory to God for that!!!

It's quite amazing how they fluff around on details, like the name of God and 'the' and 'a'...at some point I even said "Please God forgive me if this is not right but.." then I turned to her and said "you need to repent". She was not happy about that. I also said she should be careful about what she teaches and she said ''You too" to which I responded "yes this is why I do not want to debate". Me quoting Isaiah was not me teaching, just reading the bible and stating the obvious. I think that's what I should do from now on, not explaining the verses away but just quoting them, God will do the rest. He opens the eyes of the blind.

Man this was arduous!! She just wouldn't back down or leave when I reiterated again that I would not debate it.

She even told me that Revelation doesn't say that Jesus is "the one that was, that is and is to come" really? what about Revelation 1:8 also told me it's because I am confused between Jesus and God...I also talked about the meaning of the names Immanuel and Yeshua but didn't help either.

She encouraged me to read more and think about it more...and she kept on using the words "you think that, you believe that" and I'm like "no I don't, I read the bible and it says it quite plainly". Yes, we humans, cannot make blind people see, only God can, which is why I found the back and forth of 'arguments' useless especially if no one is open to a different outcome. This is why I wanted the 'discussion' to end at Isaiah 43.

I think I did good, though I would have liked to be more gentle. Then again, when you consider how John the baptist and Jesus use the words "you brood of vipers", then I think I was quite gentle today. God would have given me the right words though so that's reassuring :D Nonetheless, I will now go and pray in thanksgiving to God and to ask for forgiveness if I did utter evil against her.

You're right to say their beliefs are heretical. They are a cult and have their own warped version of the Bible, but they will use the King James Version to make people think they believe what most Christians believe.

Be very careful!!! They are well trained to convince people of their beliefs. I recommend that you throw their literature away and seek God about whether you should let them into your house anymore. I pray that you will have God's wisdom, and I pray that they will come to the truth.

The major verse of contention is John 1:1

As the Irish Twins below explain why the JWs are wrong on their view:

LOL, Redleghunter, I know what a predicate nominative is, and I had a hard time following that.... :) But I think it's good. I'll just have to watch it a few more times.

Deal with them gently. Look through their pamphlets and look up every verse in the bible and write up a study/response with corrections where they have errors. Also write up questions to ask them to make them try to think critically about the passages/verses used in their pamphlets.

The next time they show up say you would like to go through their pamphlet with them. As you go through it with them keep going through your own study and asking the questions to them. Hopefully by the end of it(if the discussion makes it that far) they will at the very least begin to question the doctrine they hold.

This is what I did, but sadly it didn't bring them to the truth. Once I gave them the study they never wanted to come over and talk about the bible with me(though this is just one instance). It worked a little better with the Mormons, though by the end of it one of them told me they would not accept the truth until their two years were up(they swore some kind of an oath).

The method has worked before though Pastor mark met with two of them and both ended up questioning the doctrine they held. So it's all up to the Lord really.

May God bless and Guide you.

It's doubtful that you will have much of an effect on them by discussing the Bible with them, because they already have answers for each and every verse you'll use (and they believe that we are wrong about the Scriptures and that they are the only ones who know the truth .. of course ;)).

It would behoove you to do what they have done so thoroughly and systematically for all of their members where we are concerned, IOW, learn all you can about them so that you'll know where they are coming from and why.

The nature of their organization "The Watchtower Bible and Tract Society" (who they consider to be "God's prophet") and their history is all VERY important to know. For instance, did you know that they (as God's "prophet") predicted that the world (and this present age) would end on a particular day over 100 years ago. Then, when it didn't happen, they made the same prediction several more times

Biblically, we know that someone is a true prophet of God because his predictions about the future come true. We also know that those who claim to be prophets are always considered to be "false" prophets when their predictions do not come true, even once ..... so that makes The Watchtower Society what kind of prophet?

Then there is their "translation" of the Bible, the New World "translation" that the Twins discussed in part in the video above. I bring this up because one of the biggest problems with their translation team is the proven (in court) fact that none of them actually understood Hebrew, Greek or Aramaic at even a first year entry level

Here's a good place to start reading about the JW's, their "Bible" and their "prophet" (after reading the opening article, be sure to click on the other JW links below): Is the New World Translation a valid version of the Bible?

Enjoy :)

--David
p.s. - there are plenty of books discussing all the aspects and errors of this cult as well, but I'd start online and go from there. Here's another site to check out with plenty to say about them: Jehovah's Witness Organization | CARM.org

"If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching [i.e. the non-heretical Gospel], do not receive him into your house or give him any greeting, for whoever greets him takes part in his wicked works." (2 John 1:10-11 English Standard Version).

I would not open the door to these people if they come with heretical beliefs. They are not of Christ.

*I just want to add I also struggle with being too polite and "nice" but the Lord has revealed to me that this is actually sinful because I am choosing people over the Lord for the sake of politeness (and speaking only for myself, fear of losing the approval of men or being outcast).

Yes those simple Irish snake farmers went by that pretty quick.

But I think they were reading from Vine’s Expository:

(d) Theos is used

(1) with the definite article,

(2) without (i.e., as an anarthrous noun). "The English may or may not have need of the article in translation. But that point cuts no figure in the Greek idiom. Thus in Acts 27:23 ('the God whose I am,' RV) the article points out the special God whose Paul is, and is to be preserved in English. In the very next verse (ho theos) we in English do not need the articles" (A. T. Robertson, Gram. of Greek, NT, p. 758).

As to this latter it is usual to employ the article with a proper name, when mentioned a second time. There are, of course, exceptions to this, as when the absence of the article serves to lay stress upon, or give precision to, the character or nature of what is expressed in the noun. A notable instance of this is in John 1:1, "and the Word was God;" here a double stress is on theos, by the absence of the article and by the emphatic position. To translate it literally, "a god was the Word," is entirely misleading. Moreover, that "the Word" is the subject of the sentence, exemplifies the rule that the subject is to be determined by its having the article when the predicate is anarthrous (without the article). In Romans 7:22, in the phrase "the law of God," both nouns have the article; in Romans 7:25, neither has the article. This is in accordance with a general rule that if two nouns are united by the genitive case (the "of" case), either both have the article, or both are without. Here, in the first instance, both nouns, "God" and "the law" are definite, whereas in Romans 7:25the word "God" is not simply titular; the absence of the article stresses His character as lawgiver.

Where two or more epithets are applied to the same person or thing, one article usually serves for both (the exceptions being when a second article lays stress upon different aspects of the same person or subject, e.g., Revelation 1:17). In Titus 2:13 the RV correctly has "our great God and Savior Jesus Christ." Moulton (Prol., p.84) shows, from papyri writings of the early Christian era, that among Greek-speaking Christians this was "a current formula" as applied to Christ. So in 2 Peter 1:1 (cp. 2 Peter 1:11; 2 Peter 3:18).

Here's the deal. You aren't going to convince them Jesus is Lord. They aren't going to convince you otherwise if you are firm in your belief and faith. So what's the point of dialogue? I submit there is no point unless you just want to fool with them for your own entertainment. As for me, I think life is too short to be wasted on such futile endeavors. I politely tell them to move along.

They always want to give you something, to leave something in your home. The Bible tells us not to let pagan and accursed items in our home so i would say to ditch any lying around and to not accept any they try to give you.

You want to be polite and they are counting on that while they are being rude by trying to take up your time with a false gospel. If you absolutely feel led of the Holy Spirit to witness to them, go for it. Otherwise I would just politely say "I'm not interested" and repeat that if necessary.

Of course you can, and should, pray for them. But you are under no obligation to invite people in who want to indoctrinate you into their false and antiChrist religion.

One thing I will say to JW, though, sometimes, if I see them in passing by and they have spoken to me with that hopeful look. I gently remind them that there is no J in Hebrew, so their "prophet" couldn't possibly be a prophet as he made a big deal of of teaching them the "true" Name. In ancient documents we see the letters YHWH for the Father. No J.

And P.S. Now I have not heard of this happening, but I bet it has at least once or twice. What if the JW's aren't even JW's but are casing your place and you? What if they really go to a JW "Church" but are still into casing people's homes, property and so on? What do you really know about them?

Turning on the lawn sprinklers works wonders too.

When they hand you material next time, hand them this in return:

Chick.com: War Games!

Beautiful!

I did try most of these reasons to believe but she had answers to them all, which to be honest I wasn't listening to...that's where I failed. well, I know now if there is a next time.
