A lot of people dont realise just how much Obama did for restoring confidence in its Asia Pacific allies.

Australia and New Zealand and Indonesia were particularly fed up with the USA. Bush had come to the Australian parliament highlighting that there was concrete evidence of Weapons of Mass Destruction. That drew Australia into a war and cost young Australian lives. Now, of course, we know that WMD didnt exist and that evidence was concocted. What a breach of faith it was to be fed lies directly from the President to our Prime Minister.

Even now - with Trump electing not to attend the APEC and ASEAN forums, alliances are turning to China with President Xi Jinping working well with world leaders at those recent forums. To most, it signalled the USA's declining influence in the Pacific, and China's increasing dominance.

...wouldn't that sort of defeat the purpose of trying to encourage others to also help other people? Which is what he was doing yesterday.

Well, that's one way to spin his antics. There are plenty of charitable agencies that serve the poor every day whose example anyone may follow and to whose efforts anyone may contribute. Obama's attempt to encourage others to charitable acts is a pale and rather self-aggrandizing shadow next to the brilliant and constant effort of these agencies who deserve our attention far more than Obama does.

or it was.

Or, it wasn't.

...or he was trying to encourage other people to help out at Thanksgiving?/Christmas?
tulc(just a thought)

It was a thought, yes. Not a very good one, I think, but a thought nonetheless. Obama's charity is pretty obviously a cloak for his chronic self-promotion. There are any number of far superior examples of charity one could - and should - follow.

you did notice where he went, right? Because I get the impression you think the goal was to promote his group when it was actually about where he was serving, Chicago Food Depository.

Or, it wasn't.

So he succeeded in his goal. He reminded people they should be helping other people who need help.

Well you've convinced me of one thing: if he runs for President again I wont be voting for him. :)

There are any number of far superior examples of charity one could - and should - follow.
I don't think he'd disagree with you, because, much like Paul the Apostle, "as long as the work gets done" I suspect President Obama will be just as happy. ;)
tulc(has liked President Obama since he was a Senator, and hasn't seen any reason to change his opinion since he left office)

Theres a concept here that I applaud. People who have high public profiles, capture the minds and hearts of people. What they say and do matters as it influences people. Doing a positive act, role models to the community.

So a high profile rugby union player may make a statement about violence towards women, because he knows he has the respect of a lot of men. He is role modelling and thus trying to influence using his profile.

Obama was role modelling. Doing so puts a spotlight on those that are homeless, and places a spotlight on the charitable works that support the homeless.

Now that only works on the community holding the high-profile person in esteem. If they do not, then despite the positivism of placing a spotlight on the needy, it instead invokes cynicism, claims of self aggrandisement.... so the negative comments and vitriol towards Obama's charitable work, are from those who are unable to appreciate the role modelling occurring. They have chosen cynicism instead...... that in itself is uncharitable.

Can't help but observe that many of the disparaging comments about Obama performing good ... are the same type of statements the Pharisees made about Jesus doing good ...

To draw a proper parallel here between Jesus and the Pharisees and those of us who don't see Obama through rose colored glasses you'd have to establish that we are Pharisaical in our thinking and living and that Obama is totally unworthy of our criticism. Good luck with that. It doesn't follow that merely because we are harshly critical of Obama that he is a Jesus figure and we unfair and hypocritical detractors. Your parallel, then, is convenient and facile, but widely inaccurate.

One must ask themselves these questions ... if they feel obliged to criticize someone who is clearly doing good ...

Well, I for one didn’t spend the day in service of those in need. To be honest, doing so never even crossed my radar. So good for him, or anybody, who works in service of others, especially on a holiday where service of others is a beautiful way to celebrate.

Indeed, you shall ...

It's just like knowing Donald Trump by his fruits.

Please keep in mind that Trump himself did say: "I could stand in the middle of 5th Avenue and shoot somebody and I wouldn’t lose voters" (Source). He also incited violence during this rallies (Source).

Donald Trump Suggests ‘Second Amendment People’ Could Act Against Hillary Clinton

Let's take a short look at some of the fruits Donald Trump has produced.

(1) He publicly mocked a disabled reporter. Oh wait, according to his conservative supporters, he didn't mock the disabled reporter despite the photos and videos clearly showing he did.

(2) He paid thousands of dollars to a inappropriate content star to silence her about their affair.

(3) He joked about dating his daughter, Ivanka, if she hadn't been his daughter.

(4) He agreed with Howard Stern that she was a piece of [insert profane word here].

(5) He bragged about watching young teenage girls getting undressed during a beauty pageant.

(6) He called the NFL players who knelt during the national anthem with a profane word I'm not allowed to even abbreviate because of the site's profanity rule.

(7) He referred to Haiti, El Savador and other African countries as [insert profane word] countries. Once again I'm not allowed to abbreviate the cuss word because of the profanity rule.

(8) He boastfully bragged about groping women in their private area and forcing himself on them, which his loyal conservative Christian supporters referred to as locker room banter.

(9) He's in his 3rd marriage to his former mistress and he fathered 5 children with 3 different women.

(10) He has been caught in multiple lies, which his conservative Christian supporters have dismissed.

And last but not least, the really strangest behavior of it all...

The Pharisee who prayed in Luke 18:10-12 was doing good - on the level of appearances. But Christ condemned his prayer as a demonstration of hypocrisy and self-aggrandizement. I'm doing the same with Obama. Not everything that appears good actually is. This is certainly true for Obama, one of the worst Presidents the States has had.

In any case, you seem not to have understood my point in my last post. Your quotation of Christ makes the same mistake that you made in the post of yours that I commented on.

I'd much rather have a leader or former leader that served the poor food (even if it was for show) than one that wouldn't (in public or in secret). The poor still got tangible help and it highlighted a service that any one can do for others.

Obama and his family would serve food to shelters as a regular holiday tradition for them; so this wasn't an out of the ordinary thing.

And, of course, you can do that.

Obama's helping to feed the poor is, ... not at all, like the Pharisee's hypocritical prayer. Nor is it like yours.

And it may be your opinion that he was one of the worst presidents the US has had, ... and that is your right.

But it is just as clear that irrepressible American majorities elected Obama to the presidency twice. Which is more than is true for billions of his fellow Americans on either side of him in history, including Trump (the buffoon) ... and George W. Bush (who I like ... in a rather tragic sort of way).

Even a good man will have his detractors. Christ certainly did.

You sir, appear to bear that out ...
