Free Will in Heaven
(Adapted from and with apologies to Eric Clapton -- Tears in Heaven)

Beyond the door,
There's peace I'm sure.
And I know there's got to be
Free will in heaven.

Would you throw a fit,
If He controlled you in heaven?
Would it be the same,
If He bound your will in heaven?

You must be strong,
And carry on.
'Cause you know there's no free will
Here in heaven

=====
ANSWER: NO! there is no Free Will in Heaven

Thankfully, in glorification God eradicates my sin nature and eliminates any possibility of rebellion.

So much for the theory that for love to exist you have to be free to reject the other person.

There is love among the Three Persons of the God Head, yet I am not worried They will have a spat!

Agreed... free will (at least in terms of the ability to sin or not) is taken away. When the law is finally written in full in our hearts, it becomes part of who and what we are and the ability to stand against God, at that point, can no longer happen. Sure we might be able to choose to go here or there... but to be able to choose to sin once we have been "perfected?" No a chance! :)

Color me skeptical. While there will be no call to ever reject Him, we will still choose which songs of praise & worship that we might sing to Him at any given moment, if not writing a new one...!

And in ruling over the angels, we will get to choose how we carry out His directives.

Those are the only things that make free will worthwhile anyway.

(It is comparable to having Adam name all of the animals. Free will, without sin.)

There will be free will in heaven .... but ... choices/decisions will be perfect because there will be no sin and they will all be made out of pure love, because God is love and we will be one with Him.

I believe there is free will in heaven. As our hearts and minds will also be free from all evil and darkness, there will be no desire in our free will to go out of the way and become basically bad people.

We can even be set free here on the Earth...

31 Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed;
32 And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.
33 They answered him, We be Abraham's seed, and were never in bondage to any man: how sayest thou, Ye shall be made free?
34 Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin.
35 And the servant abideth not in the house for ever: but the Son abideth ever.
36 If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed. - John 8

I believe once we are clothed in the new garments there will be no desire for evil. We will be free in the sense we will not desire otherwise.

And white robes were given unto every one of them... -Revelation 6:11

Let us be glad and rejoice, and give honour to him: for the marriage of the Lamb is come, and his wife hath made herself ready. And to her was granted that she should be arrayed in fine linen, clean and white: for the fine linen is the righteousness of saints. - Revelation 19:7-8

While in college I spent a year with the “Free Will Baptist” and taught Sunday School. They gave me a beautiful leather bound Open Bible for my service there signed by all the members, which I have retained in my possession even unto this good day.

In never did understand why they called themselves “Free Will” though.

Were they Calvinist? Because many Baptist churches believe in free will. We [people] can choose to walk away from God, if they so decide too, but we cannot be stolen or lost from God. This is my take on things anyway because a loving God will not "force" you into a relationship you detest and do not want.

  • Romans 8:28(KJV)
And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God , to them who are called according to his purpose .

Romans 8:29
For whom he did foreknow , he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren.

Romans 8:30
Moreover whom he did predestinate, them he also called: and whom he called, them he also justified:
and whom he justified, them he also glorified.

Amen!

Our sanctification is complete in Heaven.
We will have glorified bodies.
We will be conformed to the image of Jesus Christ.
There will be no temptations .
There will be no deceiver.
There will be absolutely no desire whatsoever to sin.

That being understood, yes we will have free will in Heaven.

All glory be to God now and forever!
Amen.

Sin is to destroy things for ones own ends.
If you see the futility of this, and you choose to build and use things as they should be used, how is that not exercising free will.

The problem with sinners is they see a gain for themselves while ignoring the cost. That is not free will but delusion and destruction, and is driven by emotional slavery to the buzz.

The enemy creates this picture that to be "good" is to repress ones passions, while following ones passions is to be alive. Both are wrong pictures. Passion are God given, their context is our choosing separate from God, which possess us and make us enemies of ourselves and the Lord.

It is easy to destroy things, it takes a lifetime to build things. If one has not bought into heaven and building things to Gods glory, I do not think one is heaven bound.

Why did angels have free will to sin in heaven.
When you are in Heaven, if anyone says to you, "Hey, do you want to help me overthrow God?" don't do it; it's a trap...!

It's even better than that! It's not merely a matter of taking something away but it's also a matter of getting something. When we finally meet God we've received all we can possibly want, we receive the gift of Himself. The will is still free but it wants nothing else, nothing could sway it because absolute perfect beauty and ultimate goodness is staring us in the face. Enthrallment, ecstasy, complete happiness is the result. The will is captivated, finally satisfied. Man was made for communion with God. Nothing else, nothing less, nothing created can satisfy us. "God alone satisfies", as Aquinas put it.

We now finally, fully love God with our whole heart, soul, mind, and strength, it can't be helped because now we fully know Him as we are fully known- and to know God is to love Him. And to obtain that object of ones love...is heaven.

That didn't work out so well for the angels in heaven who sinned. The lack of a "sin nature" didn't keep them from sinning, did it.

NO! there is no Free Will in Heaven

Then how did the heavenly angels sin. Did God cause them to sin.

I think there is some form of free will in heaven. Before they rebelled, the demons were angels in heaven, yet they still made a choice to turn against God.

For some reason their sin was irrevocable - there was no way back. I suppose this has to do with the fact they knew God face to face for lack of a better term and yet still rebelled. We cannot see God in that way, so our sin is done in ignorance, to put it rather badly. Or as Christ said, "Forgive them Father, for they do not know what they are doing!"

It's a question that I wonder about sometimes - would it be possible to gain heaven, and yet still rebel sometime down the track? Although I also think that we will be given a glimpse of hell, and will not want to go there, but that would be a negative way of discouraging rebellion on the part of the saints.

So who knows? What was the intrinsic difference between the angels who rebelled and those who didn't? God made both sets of angelic beings. If we can't answer that, I don't think we're going to be able to answer the OP's question.

Good Day, Ken

Here is the twist for me.. do we really have the (unrestrained) ability to sin?

It is very clear God did not allow (kept him) Abimelech from sinning against him.

Then God said to him in the dream, “Yes, I know that you have done this in the integrity of your heart, and it was I who kept you from sinning against me. Therefore I did not let you touch her.

If this was something he could not do because of God, he in fact lost his ability to do so, along with his freedom.

Thoughts?

Bill

Good Day, MLYTM

You have a distinction of categories... Angels are not redeemed sons of Adam, but they like us are volitional creatures.

Christ did not die to give angels peace with God, he did that for the fallen image bearers man.

In Him,

Bill

Your point is good, but I wouldn't think that God will restrain all who are His, all of the time. Which is why Messiah could say, "Go and sin no more," which places the ability to sin in the lap of the sinner and not God (in preventing it). Abimelech is a great example, but I don't see him representing all of God's people or even him for all of his life. It was for that time and place it seems that God restrained him.

The writing of the law on the mind and heart, I believe Bill... is somewhat idiomatic. I think it is actually going to be coded in us, in our DNA, it will be part of who and what we are and that is why we will lose our ability to ever sin again.
