I use other scriptures to show how the Lord withholds understanding on those who choose to believe false teachings.
Ezekiel 12:2 These people cannot see or hear the Word because they are rebellious.

Isaiah 56:10 All Israel’s watchmen are blind, perceiving nothing, they are like dumb dogs that cannot bark.

Jeremiah 6:10 To whom shall I speak? To whom give warning, who will hear me? The peoples ears are blocked, they are incapable of listening, they treat the Lord’s Word as a reproach.

As Daniel 12:9-10 says; ….only a few wise leaders will understand. Pray to be among them!
.....but that's not what these Scriptures you're using mean.

You are using other scriptures from the REB (beginning with this - what I believe is - faulty premise and proof-texting) - interpreting passages as meaning the exact opposite of all the other versions, though.
The Revised English Bible, Oxford Press, 1989, is a complete re-translation by a consortium of the majority of the British Church's. They used all the ancient sources and rendered the scriptures so as to give the best understanding of what is being conveyed to us.
The REBible was recommended to me by my brother, who is a Wycliffe scholar, I trust it above any other version.

The exact Words of Isaiah 8:16 I shall tie up the message, I shall seal the instruction so it cannot be consulted by My disciples. REB
This is reinforced by several other scriptures, as I quoted. Also there are prophesies saying how it will be only AFTER the Lord's Day of wrath, that people will be able to understand. Isaiah 35:4-5, Isaiah 29:18, Isaiah 32:3-4
Another verse that excites opposition is: Luke 21:36 Be on the alert, praying at all times for the strength to pass safely through all that is coming and to stand in the presence of the Son of Man. REB.
Every other version translates 'ekphugein' as 'escape', but the REB says: to pass safely thru.....which is correct, as the previous verse says; what is coming will come on everyone, the whole world over.
This truth destroys one of the main supports of the false 'rapture to heaven' theory.

Perhaps now you would address the OP of this thread? Esp; Isaiah 8:17-18, that refers to us Christians; the children the Lord has given to Zion.

In response to your post. Even referring to OT scripture I stand on the JPS Tanakh.

Isaiah 8
11For the LORD spoke thus to me with a strong hand, admonishing me that I should not walk in the way of this people, saying: 12‘Say ye not: A conspiracy, concerning all whereof this people do say: A conspiracy; neither fear ye their fear, nor account it dreadful. 13The LORD of hosts, Him shall ye sanctify; and let Him be your fear, and let Him be your dread. 14And He shall be for a sanctuary; but for a stone of stumbling and for a rock of offence to both the houses of Israel, for a gin and for a snare to the inhabitants of Jerusalem.15And many among them shall stumble, and fall, and be broken, and be snared, and be taken.’

16‘Bind up the testimony, seal the instruction among My disciples.’17And I will wait for the LORD, that hideth His face from the house of Jacob, and I will look for Him.18Behold, I and the children whom the LORD hath given me shall be for signs and for wonders in Israel from the LORD of hosts, who dwelleth in mount Zion. 19And when they shall say unto you: ‘Seek unto the ghosts and the familiar spirits, that chirp and that mutter; should not a people seek unto their God? on behalf of the living unto the dead 20for instruction and for testimony?’—Surely they will speak according to this word, wherein there is no light.— 21And they shall pass this way that are sore bestead and hungry; and it shall come to pass that, when they shall be hungry, they shall fret themselves, and curse by their king and by their God, and, whether they turn their faces upward, 22or look unto the earth, behold distress and darkness, the gloom of anguish, and outspread thick darkness.
I don't understand your position here. What are you saying Isaiah 8 says?

Could you please cite your source of this....because I've yet to come in contact with anyone else that even uses this version (and I read a lot from British scholars....namely N.T.Wright).

Maybe those other Scriptures reinforce your presumption.....but I don't see any to be supporting your assertion.

You're following a whole separate framework from me - so I can't really "address the OP". You seem to be bringing in your own ideas and adding them to the text.

I have cited my source. I actually bought my REB from America. It includes the Apocrypha, which has a lot of very useful information.

The basic problem is, we have differing worldviews about what the Lord plans for our future.

What I do, as my task of promoting what the Prophets wrote, is to write out the Bible prophesies in an easy to read form and help to explain them from other scriptures and from modern knowledge.
The REB is the best version for this, but I always refer to the KJV, the NIV, CJV and others as well.

We who trust in the Lord and are Bible believers can and should know what He has planned for our future. Paul says: 1 Thessalonians 5:4 You; friends are not in the dark, that Day will not come upon you like a thief. Revelation 1:1 The Lord has revealed His plans to His servants.

We believe that God’s Word is inerrant and complete as presented to us in the Holy Scriptures, therefore it is not right to ignore parts of it, or to say: that must have already happened, and: that does not apply to us, excepting for the obvious.

To hold onto beliefs that do not have solid Bible support, like looking to the Return of Jesus as the next event, or a ‘rapture’ out of this world, is a serious error and may result in some disadvantage for you. The attitude of “I trust in the Lord for protection” is correct, but barely adequate when He has given us so much warning and information.
The actual end times events will surprise and shock those who didn’t bother to gain understanding, even though it will dramatically affect everyone.

The unfortunate part about not knowing our future, is that we miss out on the anticipation of the wonderful and amazing promises that the Lord has made to His people, those who keep His Laws and honour and praise their Creator.

Now, there is a great proliferation of end times misinformation, books, movies, internet, etc. Hopefully people can see through the commercialization and profit making opportunities of these times. But, the biggest problems for church goers is the lack of preaching about prophecy and the adherence to inadequate Bible translations. How can we properly understand something written 400 years ago? So many Bibles have, at best a translators bias and at worst actual changes to suit certain doctrines.

Best of luck!
As I showed, many other scriptures support the REB version of the Lord's people's lack of understanding. Just as it is today, as we see in the multitude of church's and here on this forum.

No. It is those who choose to believe false teachings, who will become locked into them and unable to discern the truths of God's plans for our future. Isaiah 29:9-12, Ephesians 4:17-18
Actually sir. Anyone who thinks that there even is a need for additional teachings outside the truth of the Gospel is already confused and doesn’t even realize how much so

To the TESTIMONY

There’s only ONE TESTIMONY and HIS WITNESSES will testify

I don't understand your position here. What are you saying Isaiah 8 says?
Its saying if they do not speak according to THE WORD it’s because the TRUTH/the LIGHT/the TESTIMONY/the WITNESS is not in them

Teaching the Word

Psalm 78:1-8 My People, mark My Words, I shall tell you a meaningful story, I shall expound the riddle of things past. Things that our forefathers have told us – the wonderful acts of the Lord to His people. The Lord laid upon Jacob a solemn charge to teach his descendants, to repeat through the generations, for them to put their trust in God, to remember His great deeds for them and to keep His commandments. Not to do as their ancestors did – a disobedient and rebellious generation, their hearts not fixed firmly on the Lord.

Jeremiah 24-26 Your ancestors did not listen to the prophets I sent. Zech 7:12

Hosea 3:6 Want of knowledge has been the ruin of My people....

Isaiah 28:9-11 Who is there that can be taught? Who makes sense of what he hears? They are like babes, newly weaned. So now, in another tongue, the Lord will address this people.

Isaiah 55:1-3 Come for water and food, [the Law and the Commandments] get My instruction at no cost. Listen to Me and you will fare well, you will enjoy the best of food, hear Me and you will have life.

Isaiah 48:17 Thus says the Lord your redeemer: I will teach you for your own wellbeing and lead you in the way you should go.

Jeremiah 16:21 Therefore I am teaching My people once and for all, of My power and might and they will learn that My Name is the Lord.

Psalm 25:8-9 The Lord is good and upright, therefore He teaches sinners the way they should go. He guides the humble in right conduct, teaching them His Laws.

Psalm 27:11-12 Teach me Your way Lord, do not give me up to the greed of my enemies. Lead me by a level path, so I can escape the troubles that beset me, those liars that threaten harm.

Psalm 32:8 I shall teach you and guide you the way you should go, I will keep you under My eye.

Psalm 86:11 Lord teach me Your way, that I may walk in Your truth.

Isaiah 2:2-3 In days to come the Lord’s House will be raised above the mountains and many people will say: Let us go up to the Lord’s House, that he may teach us His ways, for instruction comes from Zion and the Word from Jerusalem.

Jeremiah 31:34 No longer will My people teach one another, they will all know the Lord.

Matthew 23:10 Do not call yourself ‘Teacher’, for you have one teacher – the Messiah.

James 3:1 My friends, not many of you should become teachers, because you may be certain that we who teach will ourselves face a severer judgement.

2 Peter 2:1-3 In the past there were false prophets and now there are false teachers among you. They will gain many adherents to their destructive theories, bringing the way of truth into disrepute. In their greed for money, they will trade on peoples credulity with sheer fabrications.

Isaiah 51:4-8 Listen to Me, My people, My instruction will shine forth from Me and My judgement will dawn upon you. In an instant the sky will be dispersed like smoke, the earth will become tattered and torn and many people will die, but you who keep My Laws – do not fear your enemies, do not let their reviling dismay you. For My saving power is unbroken and My Deliverance will be everlasting. Ref: REB, Some verses abridged

Only after the Day of the Lord’s wrath, will we receive true instruction.
Now; belief in fables is rife, just as Paul said it would be. 2 Timothy 4:3-4
