Faith brings regeneration which results in works.
The works don't save; but because salvation is regeneration and works result out of regeneration, if someone does not have works, we can determine that they are not saved.
However, God does not want His children stressing over whether they have good works or not. He wants us resting in His grace. And the works that we do, He desires that we would do them out of love for Him; and not out of a fear that if we don't do them we won't be saved.
Salvation through faith alone means forgiveness and regeneration. This is a work of the Holy Spirit.
And forgiveness is something that is not based on anything that we do. It is based completely on what Christ did for us. We begin to put our trust in our works to save us, and we miss out on the free gift of salvation that Christ has offered to us.
There is a way which seems right to a man; but the end thereof is the way of death.
It seems right to us that we would save ourselves through our own good works.
However, when we go that route, we are seeking wages for services rendered (Romans 4:4). And the wages of sin is death (Romans 6:23; Isaiah 64:6).
