He then launched an attack on Gillum, a candidate backed by Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) who would be the first black governor of Florida if elected, accusing him of embracing a "socialist agenda."

“Let’s build off the success we’ve had on Gov. Scott. The last thing we need to do is to monkey this up by trying to embrace a socialist agenda with huge tax increases bankrupting the state. That is not going to work," DeSantis said.

I don't know the guy but it is an expression used in our culture. Did he mean it racially? Does he have a history of racism? That is what I dislike about our culture today. We don't verify, instead we make claims and then deal with the fallout, if any, later. How hard would it be to dig into this dude's past (can I even say "dude" anymore?) and look and see if there is a history... or if this was just an expression he might not have used under the circumstances?

Is there a problem?
I guess the idea is that there was a black candidate and the word "monkey" was used in a sentence related to that candidate. However, as I posted earlier... unless there is a history of racism, then this was just meant to be an expression and to read anything more into it would be disingenuous.

I can find over a hundred years worth of images, articles and memes that apparently none of President Trumps supporters have never seen in their entire lives. Try here:

But all that aside, I suspect this is one of those "dog whistle" moments President Trump and a lot of his supporters love. then can claim: 1) "I didn't know it would sound racist!" and 2) "Oh, you all just need to lighten up!".

Um... this one was about another candidate... it wasn't Trump that used "monkeying around" was it? If not, then your reply reveals a desire to cling to your own bias and ignore truth. And if this guy wasn't a racist and it was just a phrase perhaps used at the wrong time (I have used "monkeying around" HUNDREDS of times or more in my life) then by even sharing this you are bearing false witness. Make sure he is a racist before posting in a manner that makes him look like one!

Didn't say he was a racist, just as I didn't say President Trump was one either. what I am saying is he was either dog whistling at worst or just tone deaf. On the other hand he could simply be playing the "I'm the innocent victim here!" card. You know the one where he makes an inflammatory remark and then pretends people are "too sensitive!" or that "People are playing the race card on me, I'm the real victim here" act.

Where is the inflammatory remark? If you're saying "monkeying around" is inflammatory than that is exactly what I am calling out. So save the waving and own up.... either you posted this because he used the word "monkey" in a sentence that spoke of a black man and you see that as racist or what?

You need to stop monkeying around and get to the point. Hmm.. did I offend you? Of course not... you have no point and this whole thread is just part of your need to share your political bias.

Yeah, I've been around a long time and haven't heard that phrase before.
You've not heard "monkeying around?" It is an idiomatic phrase that simply means "to play or goof off." My mom used it ALL THE TIME when she wanted us to stop playing around and start doing whatever work she wanted us to do. This is one of the most common phrases I have heard throughout my life by many people including my teachers, coaches... any adult around kids. There is NOTHING racist about this phrase.... NOTHING. What's next, being white I am not able to use the word "black" and if I do I am a racist? We need to grow up!

You've not heard "monkeying around"?
Sure I've heard that but he didn't say that. He said " Monkey this up". This phrase is not the same as "monkey around". Without knowing DeSantis on a personal side, it is impossible to know his intentions when using the phrase.

No, what's next is trying to think without getting so offended about something without knowing facts. Like assuming the phrase "monkeying around" is the same as "monkey this up".
We need to grow up!
I agree.

I agree.
He said both champ. And "monkey this up" is ALSO an idiomatic phrase... albeit not one as well used. Like I said to Tulc who IGNORED the question, can we show a history of racism in this guy? Can we prove he meant it racially? Is yes... we should ALL come down hard on him. If no... then this thread perpetuates a lie and is bearing false witness... if that means anything to anyone anymore?

If you have a transcript of him using both phrases during his interview I'd love to read it. That would clear up a lot.

Well, as I wrote, I've never heard that phrase used in anyway, not have I found it in a reference book of idiomatic phrases.

In listening to his interview, one has to really stretch it out in order to assess that it was used to denigrate Mr. Gillum but without knowing DeSantis on a personal basis one cannot know if he had a slip. I would think that there would be something out there if he did have some problem with racial bias.

It's a good political tactic to drop bombs like this in such a way that the politician can convincingly deny any wrongdoing. It has the benefit of generating headlines like this that then rallies their supporters against "political correctness". DeSantis has made a concerted effort to court Trump supporters and he's doing it very well.

99% chance that this was intentional, and if as Ken says above, he used the word monkey TWICE in the same interview, then there's no question at all that he's doing this to play the anti-SJW card.

I certainly understand this and it was what I wondered about. Mr. DeSantis is a very intelligent and articulate speaker. He knows how phrases can be used in a psychological manner to influence people.

He knows that most Republicans are going to vote for him and most Democrats will vote for Gillum. It's those swing voters which almost always determine the outcome of a close election. A phrase properly used can be used to sway those voters.

Did that happen? I'm waiting for more info. :)
