hello everyone, I became a born again Christian a few month ago. I am struggling with something at the moment. I came across a post that had information about how there were many stories like the ones in the Bible before it was written. Basically it said the Bible is plagiarism.

I believe the Bible to be true and my experience with God was amazing. I experienced the Holy Spirit then the Bible explained everything I experienced.

However this information is testing my faith a bit.

Do you have any tips?

(Also many of the other religions that people say parallel the story of Jesus can be easily debunked, for example someone told me that Horus is basically Jesus but the stories are completely different)

Thanks.

It took me quite some time to ignore the ignorant.

Tip #1 Research
Tip #2 Study
Tip#3 Research some more
And then Tip#4..Study some more

Bonus tip: Keep researching, and then keep studying

"Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of Truth" (2 Timothy 2:15)

Best way to deal with a test of faith, is to test your doubts. Combat doubts with truth. And study not to try to one up doubters, but study to better understand your Father's heart.

Anytime you get a challenge, don't be afraid to say that you will study on that. Sometimes I would get too prideful and try to answer things I don't understand, trying to look good. God has humbled me more to have the courage to say that " I don't know everything, but I would love to learn more about God", and make it as an opportunity to learn something new.

Thank you. Would it be wrong if I studied the "same stories" in the other religions they brought up? That's how I figured out the whole Horus thing wasn't true. Then a part of me feels like it's a waste of time and that I should just focus on the Bible but then the problem still is there.

I guess I'll get there eventually lol
I would advise that when people make wild and specious claims to you, the first response should be “can you substantiate your assertions.”

There’s a difference between an assertion and an argument. An argument actually has evidence to back up the proposed claim.

What you usually see from folks hostile to the Bible are a bag full of assertions which amounts to an opinion. And opinions are like arm pits. Everyone has a couple and they stink.

Only the Bible validates itself, no other book can stand up to comparative scrutiny (comparing it's own writings for accuracy against itself).

However, the Egyptian (book of the dead i.e.) is written on papyrus.... Ten Commandments on stone---twice!

Your mention of Horus as a parallel to Jesus is telling. I've heard the accusation before. It's internet trash.

If you continue to challenge those accusations you'll eventually find them false. All of them.

Don't work hard if you don't have to. Just make those making the claims prove themselves. It's a whole lot easier than trying to disprove a negative.

Since you mentioned Horus- there's probably a hundred different versions of his story, but they usually boil down to "his dad died, his mom wanted a child, she was able to use his phalus to conceive Horus, and eventually put Horus' dad back together and resurrected him. Then Horus was killed by his uncle (with poison, I think), his mom pleaded for his life with another god, and he was resurrected." I'm fuzzy on the rest.

So, that's already radically different than Jesus' life. On top of that, the people making these claims just "expect" the apostles to have been aware of Horus.

I take these claims with less than a grain of salt.

Not at all, if you even looked at the backstories of alot of the leaders in the Bible, one that come to mind is Daniel,Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego in Daniel 1:17, even apostles, these were well versed people. So if its to help you better understand your stance when it comes to defending it, then that's great!

I guess the fear would be that studying other things would take away from the Bible. I say no, have faith that they are no match for the Word. And the Word is not only just mere scriptures, but they are also accounts of various events throughout history and addresses alot of political, social, environmental, and spiritual frameworks that we still see today. What you are reading is a very rich and dense text, and it would be weird if you weren't asking questions and looking more into alot of themes in the Word.

Not only twice on stone but there are three versions of the ten commandments in the Bible (Exodus 34:1-28, Exodus 20:1-17, Deuteronomy 5:1-21) and the oldest version is almost totally ignored even though it is the only version to self identify as "the ten commandments".

Exodus 34:
9th commandment

26 “Bring the best of the firstfruits of your soil to the house of the Lord your God .

10th commandment

“Do not cook a young goat in its mother’s milk.”

27 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Write down these words, for in accordance with these words I have made a covenant with you and with Israel.” 28 Moses was there with the Lord forty days and forty nights without eating bread or drinking water. And he wrote on the tablets the words of the covenant—the Ten Commandments.

How many of us have even heard of the tenth commandment?

If the Bible is inspired by the Holy Spirit, then earlier versions add credibility.
It's not like traditional publishing where later stories are derivatives from
other authors.

(Insert quote of member stating 3 versions of 10 commandments... sorry edit won't allow quoting) Well that's unclear how it's supportive of the OP. But for your continued learning may I suggest: https://answersingenesis.org/bible-questions/are-there-20-commandments/

In any event, stone was used before papyrus... and we have the genealogy which God gives us, timeline so to speak, as well in the OT.

The revelation of Christ was revealed to Adam and his offspring, including Noah who carried it to this side of the flood. After the confusion of languages at Babel all of the scattered tribes corrupted the revelation and created their own mythologies containing some of the original revelation's elements. That's where the similarities come from. Search for the gospel in the stars or the witness of the stars for a better perspective on this. Here's a online book about it that you can read (recommend starting with the Preface and Introduction) - https://philologos.org/__eb-tws/

Thank you. I have a lot of questions about the Bible and I realized many of the questions I ask are questions that would be asked to a Christian apologetic in a debate or something. While the questions make me uncomfortable, I need to dig deeper to find an answer. I will probably want to debunk these people's claims eventually when I gain enough knowledge.

@Any the above is an example of a Christian who likes to challenge the authority of Holy Scriptures. You will get more posts like the above than you will from atheists believe it or not.

Ah so im guessing you never ended up reading another text in reference to the Bible then?

When folks end up confusing law summaries for the previously spelled out laws, it’s a specious argument.

Yeah it falls under that realm of apologetics.

I personally try not to gravitate too much there, because it can get heated and distracting, and its does have a way of creating a perfect storm, but its also a place where people can discuss deeper into certain topics and understand how people reason with things, that you won't find in other threads.

If anything, understanding how people think about things is more of a takeaway than anything, you'll learn a lot.
