This topic is on Saul/Paul of the NT and some similarities of him in the OT.

Saul/Paul is first introduced at the event of the stoning of Stephen in Acts 7:

Acts 7:
51 You stiff-necked people with uncircumcised hearts and ears!
You always resist the Holy Spirit, just as your fathers did.
52 Which of the prophets did your fathers fail to persecute? They even killed those who foretold the coming of the Righteous One.
And now you are His betrayers and murderers—
54 On hearing this, the members of the Sanhedrin were enraged, and they gnashed their teeth at him
57 At this they covered their ears, cried out in a loud voice, and rushed together at him.
58 They dragged him out of the city and began to stone him.
Meanwhile, the witnesses laid their garments at the feet of a young man named Saul.

8:1
And Saul was there, giving approval to Stephen’s death.

Hmmmmmm......i wonder how Saul reconciled that it was against the law to stone Stephen, yet he was all for it?

I mean he was a walking legal textbook of the law, wasn't he?

Maybe his hatred superseded his inclination to follow the law......

Interesting.

Good question.
At the time, Paul was a Pharisee and also under the OC Law of Moses before he was converted
and he acted under orders by the corrupt murderous Jewish rulers to hound the followers of Christ:

Phl 3:5
circumcision on the eighth day! of the race of Israel! of the tribe of Benjamin!
a Hebrew of Hebrews! according to law a Pharisee!

Acts 26:10
And that is just what I did in Jerusalem.
On the authority of the chief priests I put many of the Lord's people in prison,
and when they were put to death, I cast my vote against them.

Remember this event in John 8?

John 8:
3 The scribes and Pharisees, however, brought to Him a woman caught in adultery. They made her stand before them
4 and said, “Teacher, this woman was caught in the act of adultery.
5 In the Law, Moses commanded us to stone such a woman. So what do You say
?”

John 5:45
"No be ye supposing that I shall be accusing of-ye toward the Father,
is the one accusing of-ye, Moses into whom ye have hoped;
[Luke 16:30/Revelation 12:10]

Lazarus and the Rich Man - Here a little, there a little - Commentary

LUKE 16:30
"And he said, 'No, father Abraham; but if one goes to them from the dead, they will repent.'
31 But he said to him, 'If they do not hear Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded though one rise from the dead
.' "

Saul must've thought that he was doing "God's work" in going after the Christians. He was REALLY into it and zealous to the nth degree.

Jesus must've KNOWN what hypocrites those men were who wanted to stone the woman caught in the act of adultery. Good grief, did they go sneak in there to catch them "in the act"? And where was the man who was committing adultery WITH her?

That reminds me of John 16:2

Matthew 23:
34 Because of this, I am sending you prophets and wise men and teachers.
Some of them you will kill and crucify,
and others you will flog in your synagogues and persecute in town after town.

John 16:2
Putting out of the synagogue they shall be doing ye,
but is coming an hour that every the one killing ye should be supposing a divine service to be offering to the God!

1 When they had passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where there was a Jewish synagogue.
2 As was his custom, Paul went into the synagogue, and on three Sabbaths he reasoned with them from the Scriptures,
5 The Jews, however, became jealous. So they brought in some troublemakers from the marketplace, formed a mob, and sent the city into an uproar.
They raided Jason’s house in search of Paul and Silas, hoping to bring them out to the people.

Synagogue and Jews are also mentioned in Revelation. Interesting........

Revelation
2:9
“I know your works, tribulation, and poverty (but you are rich); and I know the blasphemy of those who say they are Jews and are not, but are a synagogue of Satan.
3:9
“Indeed I will make those of the synagogue of Satan, who say they are Jews and are not, but lie—indeed I will make them come and worship before your feet, and to know that I have loved you.

How ironic that Paul would be the very one hunted after his conversion, just as he was hunting down and persecuting Christians when he was Saul.

The thing about those calling themselves "Jews" that weren't "Jews" brings to mind that all throughout Biblical history, the "real Jews" were always a "remnant" of the Jewish people. Not all who claimed to be Jews loved God or even gave him the time of day, etc.

Jonah 3:
1 Then the word of Yahweh came to Jonah a second time:
2 Arise! Go to the great city of Nineveh and proclaim the message that I will give you.”
5 And the Ninevites believed God. They proclaimed a fast and dressed in sackcloth, from the greatest of them to the least.

The Ninevites are mentioned 2 times in the NT, Matt and Luke, concerning the repenting of the City of Nineveh

Matt 12:41
`Men Ninevites shall be resurrecting/anasthsontai <450> (5698) in the judging with this generation, and they shall be condemning it
that they repent into the proclamation of Jonah and behold! more of Jonah here.
[Luke 11:32]

Notice the similarity with Paul when the Lord chose him to go to the gentiles:

Jonah 1:
1 Now the word of Yahweh came to Jonah son of Amittai, saying,
2 “Arise! Go to the great city of Nineveh and preach against it, because its wickedness has come up before Me

Jonah 2:
10 And the LORD commanded the fish, and it vomited Jonah onto dry land

Jonah 3:
1 Then the word of Yahweh came to Jonah a second time:
2 “Arise! Go to the great city of Nineveh and proclaim the message that I will give you.”

In Acts 9, unlike Jonah being vomited up, Saul/Paul falls to the ground and becomes blind.

Acts 9:
1 Meanwhile, Saul was still breathing out threats of murder against the Lord’s disciples. He went to the high priest
2 to ask for letters to the synagogues in Damascus,
so that if he found any men or women belonging to the Way, he could bring them as prisoners to Jerusalem.

3 As Saul drew near to Damascus on his journey, suddenly a light from heaven flashed around him. 4 He fell to the ground and heard a voice say to him, “Saul, Saul, why do you persecute Me?”
5 “Who are You, Lord?” Saul asked.
“I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting,”a He replied.
6“Now get up and go into the city, and you will be told what you must do.”
9 For three days he was without sight, and he did not eat or drink anything.

15 “Go!” said the Lord. “This man is My chosen instrument to carry My name before the Gentiles and their kings, and before the people of Israel.
16 I will show him how much he must suffer for My name.

Good post. There are a lot of similarities between OT Saul and NT Saul/Paul such as both were Benjamites and their Tribe is mentioned in Revelation:

1 Samuel:
21 And Saul answereth and saith, 'Am not I a Benjamite -- of the smallest of the tribes of Israel? and my family the least of all the families of the tribe of Benjamin? and why hast thou spoken unto me according to this word?'

Phl 3:5
circumcised on the eighth day, of the people of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrews; in regard to the law, a Pharisee;

Rev 7:8
from the tribe of Zebulun 12,000, from the tribe of Joseph 12,000, from the tribe of Benjamin 12,000.

It's interesting, yes, that both were Benjamites. And both were lost in the sauce until God took the latter Saul, blinded him, and finally got his attention, then re-named him after his conversion.

Well the first Saul, he remained lost in the sauce, and was allowed to be king by God to show His people what a disaster it is to dish on God and reject HIM as their King. This Saul, was essentially a "curse" to Israel, till the day he died.

Sometimes i wonder if that's why God changed the latter Saul's name to "Paul", to extricate him from any sort of "legacy" of the first Saul.

King Saul was as unstable as the waves of the sea, being tossed to and fro. He was even going to kill his own son Jonathan, and guess why? By the way, it was the people that protected Jonathan, and that was because King Saul was dead wrong.

Yeah, Paul sure knew how to cause a ruckus ehehe
They felt he was speaking against the law of Moses, but with Paul being a Hebrew Jew, he was obligated to keep to keep it.

Acts 21:21
"They were instructed yet about the apostasy/apo-stasian <646> thou are teaching from Moses,
the according to the nations all Judeans saying 'no to be circumcising them the offspring, no yet to the customs/eqesin <1485> to be to be following'".

Acts 23 is a good and excellent read, [as is the whole book of Acts]

He calls Ananias a "whitewashed wall" before realizing he was a Chief Priest.

Acts 23:
1 Paul looked directly at the Sanhedrin and said, “Brothers, I have conducted myself before God in all good conscience to this day.”
2 At this, the high priest Ananias ordered those standing near Paul to strike him on the mouth.
3 Then Paul said to him, “God will strike you, you whitewashed wall!
You sit here to judge me according to the Law, yet you yourself violate the law by commanding that I be struck.”
4 But those standing nearby said, “How dare you insult the high priest of God!”
5“Brothers,” Paul replied, “I was not aware that he was the high priest, for it is written: ‘Do not speak evil about the ruler of your people.’a

Then the plot to ambush and kill Paul [the son of Paul's sister warns him in vs 15]

12 When daylight came, the Jews formed a conspiracy and bound themselves with an oath not to eat or drink until they had killed Paul.
13 More than forty of them were involved in this plot.
14
Who-any toward coming to the Chief-priests and to the Elders say "to-anathema/anaqemati <331> we anathemtize/aneqematisamen <332> (5656) ourselves of no yet nothing to taste till we may be killing Paul.
15 Now then, you and the Sanhedrin petition the commander to bring him down to you on the pretext of examining his case more carefully. We are ready to kill him on the way.” 16 But when the son of Paul’s sister heard about the ambush, he went into the barracks and told Paul.

21 Do not let them persuade you, because more than forty men are waiting to ambush him.
They have bound themselves with an oath not to eat or drink until they have killed him;
they are ready now, awaiting your consent.” [vs 14]

They were downright evil. They cared NOTHING for the living God. How DARE Paul bring up Who is BEHIND the law of Moses, and why the law was given in the first place.

With their own words and intents in their own hearts, they have damned and condemned themselves.

Blind as bats.

Ever wonder how Paul WITHSTOOD all of the horror that relentlessly came at him?
Him and Job both.

Acts 9:
13 And Ananias answered, ‘Lord, I have heard from many about this man, how many evils he did to Thy saints in Jerusalem,
14 and here he hath authority from the chief priests, to bind all those calling on Thy name.’
15 And the Lord said unto him, ‘Be going on! because a choice vessel to Me is this one, to bear My name before nations and kings — the sons also of Israel;
16 for I will shew him how many things it behoveth him for My name to suffer.

Here is a list of things Paul went thru to bring his Gospel of Christ to the Jews and Gentiles:

2 Corin 11: [Job 2:7]
especially because of the extraordinary revelations.
Therefore, so that I would not exalt myself, a thorn in the flesh was given to me, a messenger of Satan to torment me so I would not exalt myself.
But in whatever anyone dares to boast — I am talking foolishly — I also dare:
22 Are they Hebrews? So am I. Are they Israelites? So am I. Are they the descendants of Abraham? So am I.
23 Are they servants of Christ? I’m talking like a madman — I’m a better one:
with far more labors,
many more imprisonments,
far worse beatings,
many times near death.
24 Five times I received the forty lashes minus one from the Jews.
25 Three times I was beaten with rods.
Once I received a stoning.
Three times I was shipwrecked.
I have spent a night and a day in the open sea.
26 On frequent journeys, I faced
dangers from rivers,
dangers from robbers,
dangers from my own people,
dangers from Gentiles,
dangers in the city,
dangers in the wilderness,
dangers at sea, and
dangers among false brothers;
27 toil and hardship,
many sleepless nights,
hunger and thirst, often without food, cold, and without clothing.
28 Not to mention other things, there is the daily pressure on me: my concern for all the churches. 29 Who is weak, and I am not weak? Who is made to stumble, and I do not burn with indignation?

Now this is interesting, just as Paul was given a thorn in his side, a messenger from Satan, so to is Satan allowed to make Job suffer.

Job 2: 2 [Corinthians 11:2]
1 On another day, the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD;
and Satan also came with them to present himself before Him.
4 “Skin for skin!” Satan replied. “A man will give up all he owns in exchange for his life. 5 But stretch out Your hand and strike his flesh and bones, and he will surely curse You to Your face.”
6 “Very well,” said the LORD to Satan, “he is in your hands; but you must spare his life.”
7 So Satan went out from the presence of the LORD and infected Job with terrible boils from the soles of his feet to the crown of his head.
8 And Job took a piece of broken pottery to scrape himself as he sat among the ashes.
9 Then Job's wife said to him, “Do you still retain your integrity? Cursea God and die!”

Both Job and Paul rewarded:

Job 42:
12 So the Lord blessed the last part of Job’s life more than the first.
He owned fourteen thousand sheep and goats, six thousand camels, one thousand yoke of oxen, and one thousand female donkeys. 13 He also had seven sons and three daughters. 14 He named his first daughter Jemimah, his second Keziah, and his third Keren-happuch. 15 No women as beautiful as Job’s daughters could be found in all the land, and their father granted them an inheritance with their brothers.

2 Timothy 4
6 for I am already being poured out, and the time of my release hath arrived;
7 the good strife I have striven, the course I have finished, the faith I have kept,
8 henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of the righteousness that the Lord — the Righteous Judge — shall give to me in that day,
and not only to me, but also to all those loving his manifestation.

Here is a good study on Job for those interested:

Kindgdom Bible Studies Job

THE SECRET OF JOB

I never paid much attention to Job. I knew that he was an overcomer. I knew that he was tested and tried and proven to the utmost extremity and I knew that he passed the test. So I praised God for Job. I eulogized his faith and patience, and that was about as far as it went...............................

The book of Job just appeared on the scene, it came out of antiquity, it emerged from the mists of obscurity, and has always been a part of human history. It was just there! It was there before Moses. It was there, perhaps, before Abraham. We cannot tell when Job lived. The scene of the book of Job is laid in Arabia in the remote Patriarchal period.
The story begins simply: "There was a man".
Since a parable (II Sam. 12:1) and a history (I Sam. 25:2) begin with this same simple phrase, the style does not indicate whether Job was meant to be fact or allegory.

The book of Job is written in Hebrew in the style of a poetic drama, or stage play. The first two chapters, which constitute the introduction, are in prose. Beginning with the third chapter and continuing on through 42:6 the form is poetical.
From 42:7 to the end of the book it is again prose, providing as an epilogue a few facts concerning Job's later life. What is so powerfully set forth in this book is not the unfolding of a drama full of action, event, or happening.
Instead it is a poem in which several great issues that relate to the righteousness of God and the mystery of life are explored by means of conversations between Job and his friends. There is no "movement," except in the intensity of the feeling and thought expressed, until the poem comes to a crescendo with the voice of Yahweh speaking from a whirlwind.

The book of Job belongs to a type of literature known as Wisdom, common in the Near East, a special kind of writing based upon practical observations about the mystery of life — and how to live it. Its modern counterpart would be philosophy..............................

Him and Job both.

Acts 9:
13 And Ananias answered, ‘Lord, I have heard from many about this man, how many evils he did to Thy saints in Jerusalem,
14 and here he hath authority from the chief priests, to bind all those calling on Thy name.’
15 And the Lord said unto him, ‘Be going on! because a choice vessel to Me is this one, to bear My name before nations and kings — the sons also of Israel;

26 On frequent journeys, I faced
dangers from rivers,
dangers from robbers,
dangers from my own people,
dangers from Gentiles,
dangers in the city,
dangers in the wilderness,
dangers at sea, and
dangers among false brothers;

1 On another day, the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD;
and Satan also came with them to present himself before Him.

2 Timothy 4
6 for I am already being poured out, and the time of my release hath arrived;

THE SECRET OF JOB

I never paid much attention to Job. I knew that he was an overcomer. I knew that he was tested and tried and proven to the utmost extremity and I knew that he passed the test. So I praised God for Job. I eulogized his faith and patience, and that was about as far as it went.

It is believed that the book of Job is the most ancient of the inspired writings we have come to know as the Bible.
It predates the first five books of the Bible, the books of Moses, and its exact origin is a mystery. We do not know who wrote the book of Job: no information is given us on this point either in the book itself or elsewhere.

Hmmmmmmmm.....interesting. If there's some doubt about whether Job was real, perhaps we could also include Jabez in this same category, since he came from out of nowhere too, and is very obscure, etc.

Who else should we put in this category?

Hmmmmmm......i wonder how Saul reconciled that it was against the law to stone Stephen, yet he was all for it?

I mean he was a walking legal textbook of the law, wasn't he?

Maybe his hatred superseded his inclination to follow the law......

Interesting.
Didn't the law allow for the execution of blasphemers (which they believed Paul/Saul was)? It was only Roman law that overruled the Jewish law in this, I thought, which was why they were unable to legally execute him.

That's a good point......but then there's the fact that Paul was a Roman citizen.

I wonder if that had any bearing on it?

Hi brinny. I only brought that site up because of Job.
Back to Saul/Paul now.................
In all the yrs I have been studying the Bible, this is the 1st time I ever related the rewards of Job and Paul [which I put up in my previous post].
This is simply awesome!

Job 42:
12 So the Lord blessed the last part of Job’s life more than the first.
