He leaves a vacuum in maths and physics...which will cause the Higgs boson to become metastable and the vacuum to expand at the speed of light and consume space time.

Or other people will step in to his very large shoes and continue his work.

One of the two.

Like I said in the other thread, I never thought this day could come. He seemed almost mythical and timeless. He lived much longer than his doctors thought he could and his contributions to science will live on much longer after him. I don't think we should be sad over his death. We should be happy he got to live at all and as long as he did.

It's amazing he lasted as long as he did, considering his illness - and accomplished all that he did, considering he's just one person.

I appreciate his tremendous ability to explain complex matters to people such as myself, so simply and without condescension. He was a brilliant man and a great teacher.

This.

Like my granddad used to say in his last days: "Don't mourn my death. Instead, celebrate my life".

Apart from his scientific work, the way he lived his life is inspiring. Living over 50 years with ALS is astounding. Lou Gehrig died in 8 years. The average life expectancy is around 5. For anyone with ALS, it's an enormous task just accepting what you life will be--let alone facing it with such grace and courage as SH did. We should all take the Ice Bucket Challenge in his honor.

He was probably in the top ten of smartest humans that will ever walk this Earth

IN terms of intelligence, Stephen Hawkins is to us as we are to Monkeys

I mean that literally, no hyperbole

Reminds me of a funny comment Neil deGrass Tyson once made about Newton, another one of those top geniuses of human history...

Newton said "The reason I could see further then others, is because I stood on the shoulders of giants" when referring to his accomplishments in physics.

Tyson disagreed. He said "A more accurate statement would be, that he could see further then others, not because he stood on the shoulders of giants, but rather because he walked among midgets"

:D

Certainly is applicable to Hawking as well.
I heared this anecdote once... not sure if it is accurate or not, but it wouldn't surprise me...

He had this idea about something concerning black holes. He wanted to know if he was right so he comissioned some team to do the calculations. After some time, weeks/months, they came back to present their results. Hawking's reaction was "i expected a different answer. do it again."

So the team goes away and starts over. Then they come back saying "you were correct".
The thing is though.... Hawking just calculated it in his head. :D

Amazing......

I've seen that kind of disrespectful attitude toward the death of someone who wasn't a Christian from some Christians before. I thought it was sad to see how coldhearted and judgmental those Christians were toward the death of someone who wasn't a Christian. It was as if they never heard the word compassion before. The atheists and non-Christians I knew at the time were much more sympathetic and kinder, but that seems to be the norm in my life. Anyway, getting back on track with the OP, I offer my sincerest condolences to Mr. Hawkins' family and friends. He left an amazing legacy.

I worked R&D in a laser lab once upon a time and knew people who knew people that knew him and....

that is actually a true story and it happened more than once :D
