Okay so... my grandma wears this necklace that has, like, 8 different saint medals on it. She bought me a St. Joan of Arc medal to wear too and I love my medal, but I'm just curious about why people wear saint medals to begin with. Do they hold special powers or something? Do they invoke the spirit of these saints to watch over us? Sorry if these questions sound silly, I just thought I would ask.

Your grandma's necklace and your necklace sound beautiful :) I love St. Joan of Arc. People wear saint metals for protection and to help them have spiritual strength like the saint.

Searching, wearing Saint Medals is no different than when one carries a locket of a picture of a loved one around their neck, in their wallet or purse. There is no special powers! however, these saints will plead for you before Jesus Christ.

Catholic Church believe and so does Jesus Christ that the saints in heaven are ALIVE, while the Protestants believe that they are dead. Remember, what Jesus Christ said: "God is the God of the Living not the dead".

All believers are saints. I don't think anyone would want to wear a medal with my image on it. The medals don't have any powers.

Just Rachel, then you should never take a picture of yourself and send it to a loved. Then you should take down all pictures of your loved ones that hang on your walls, throw away all pics that are in your purse / wallet / any locket you may have of a loved one, because no one may want to wear your or their image. See how silly this sounds.

Unlike Protestants we in the Catholic Church believe in the communion of saints. We are PART of the body of Christ. Saints medals are one way of drawing closer to that body. We don't have to wait till we are dead to experience the entire family of God. We can do that now!

I'm sorry. I wandered into this forum by mistake. I have a difficult time navigating these forums. Crawling back into my hole now.

First of all, medals of saints do NOT have "special powers." That would be superstition. Rather, they are sacramental (they prepare us for the sacraments), and are reminders of the constant prayers of the saints in heaven.

The Saints are sort of like spiritual super heroes who inspire, help, encourage, pray for, and intercede for us as we follow Christ, fight against the flesh, and sacrifice for Him. It is common for a Catholic Christian to feel especially drawn to a particular Saint, and ask for their spiritual and practical help as they follow Christ. My French-Irish grandmother had a special devotion to Saint Francis of Assisi, and to Our Lady. As a little kid, I didn't get it, but I'm starting to. Medals help remind us of the holiness and friendship of the Saints, and some (though I don't know much about this) are (I think) actually supposed to have unique graces and promises attached to them, like the Miraculous Medal.
