America’s Founders studied the Bible. Evidence is plentiful that political speeches and sermons of their day were filled with stories, examples, and quotes from the Bible which supported and affirmed their political beliefs. Given below are the main paragraphs from the Declaration of Independence followed by Biblical scripture which coincide with the emphasized ideas in the document. It is hoped that today’s Americans will familiarize themselves with the full Biblical accounts referred to below, to get a feel for what beliefs motivated the Founders to create the first free people in modern times.
