So, a few people here have given support for my heading an year-long Bible reading plan for another year, just from a different schedule (thus perhaps perspective also) than I used back in 2016. Since we've had a year off by about this time, perhaps it is good to get back in the game. :)

I hope many people here will be willing to join in for discussion, commentary, and thoughts with this. This new schedule I found at a website called Ligonier Ministries, by a man named R.C. Sproul. Now, I personally do not know anything about him other than his name sounding familiar from back in the day when I sometimes listened to Bott Radio Network at work. So if he's a "false teacher" doomed to hell in your opinion because he takes a differing stance than you do about the Tribulation period or something >_>, let's just brush that nonsense aside and focus on the written word of God itself, and even more importantly the Word behind that written word Whom is the only reason any of us here today who believe have hope for redemption and an eternal life beyond this one. :)

So, apparently the setup of this reading schedule I found is according to what R.C.'s ministry believes to have occurred chronologically. Now, I would definitely take that with a grain of salt as to its accuracy - because logically I doubt anyone would have the complete order of events in all of Scripture figured out perfectly - but it's at least something to kind of have as perspective in the background as you read each day's set of verses.

So then, I will begin this upcoming Sunday for Day 1. I welcome anyone to join. Hope to see you here then. :)

Awesome! Can't wait to see how this goes. Maybe it will help me remember to keep reading the Bible.:satisfied: I don't know if I'll have much to say (I don't really know anything about R.C. Sproul either), but I'm gonna try to be involved. Thank you for doing this SK! :)

Well, it may be a reading plan put forth from a different teacher/ministry this time, but the same old Bible we'll actually be reading from. So, no problems. ^_^

At last, here we are at day 1, January 28th. :)

Naturally we will begin today with Genesis chapters 1 through 3.
Christian Forums

Remember, everyone. This schedule goes by chronological order, in which RC Sproul's ministry believes events in the Bible to have occurred. I personally would not take the order to be Gospel truth, but still, it might offer some new perspective.

The floor is open for commentary anytime.

Do you think that chapter 1 is a true event, or a poem or a story to make it easier for humans to understand.

Plus I know for years eve got the blame but man is just at fault as well because he also took the apple

Isn't God wonderful, He has created such beautiful things? :)

My Bible says that the language of the Creation can be seen as either literal or figurative. As for me, I don't dwell too much on whether it happened literally or not. None of us were around back then, so we can't be totally sure how it happened; we may find out in Heaven.

As a child I would sometimes think about what it must have been like when there was nothing in existence except God. My mind could not fathom it, of course, and it still can't. It's just too amazing for our minds.

I think back then I'd also feel a little upset that the woman took the apple first; I guess I was thinking that since I'm a girl, I would have it worse even though it wasn't my fault that Eve took the apple. But I don't worry about that anymore. All of us are sinners but all of us, if we live rightly, can make it to Heaven and regain our purity thanks to God's only Son, His great sacrifice, whether male or female. These earthly trials are only temporary; we all have hope for eternal joy once again.

Honestly Fire Girl I have pondered that a lot ever since I started the first Bible thread two years ago this day. In any event, I basically settled it in my heart that, whether it is literal or not, or even if every day of creation represents an age of some sort and the lands and animalkind mentioned in each evolved from the previous, that still ultimately makes God our Creator. I still believe the universe and all life within could only have come through intelligent design by a living, conscious Being, not a mere accident from a mass of non-organic matter. It takes no more faith to believe the former than to believe the latter, in my opinion. :)

One new thing I have noticed in reading this section from last time is the mention of the second day. Is where God says this, chapter 1:6-8 =>

6 And God said, Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters.

7 And God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament: and it was so.

8 And God called the firmament Heaven. And there was evening and there was morning, a second day.

It appears here that God is actually calling any expanse over the waters upon what eventually becomes the Earth "Heaven". If Heaven is what He is calling the space dividing the "waters from the waters". With a capital H, as though we speak of what most Christians traditionally believe as their eternal end destination, a place of eternal bliss somewhere up there in the skies. I wonder if Heaven here in these verses fits more with the idea that really any space beyond us - the skies, the outer space, and God's throne (figuratively, I think) - can be called "Heaven" or "heaven", with a lower-case H. I have heard it before from sermons and teachings (more just speculating from Biblical indication) that the three expanses of space I mentioned above appear to be what the Bible refers to whenever it mentions "the heavens" or "the third heaven (2 Corinthians 12:2)". It could be that Heaven or heavens really refer to any space beyond humans down on Earth, with the third heaven being the one completely out of human reach right now as it is where God can be seen as watching over us (although of course He is present everywhere when you get down to it, mind you), and believers will one day have eternal life not in an upwards kingdom called Heaven that they get access to immediately after earthly death, but rather on a "new heavens and new earth" (Isaiah 65:17, Revelation 21:1), reformed from our present Earth, with all trace of evil and corruption eliminated.

I hope my way of writing it isn't too confusing, there, and I'm not trying to confidently set forth any kind of "new teaching" here. Just pondering and thinking aloud. :)

I have always wondered if, in anything (from our flawed human perspective of course), man was the bigger idiot here. Because he was right there and saw Eve get deceived first, and then fell for it too anyway, right? ^_^

In any event, I never bought into the Muslim or hyper-patriarchal Christian perspective that woman is more evil than man just because she was the first to get deceived here and thus deserves to be treated as subservient and beneath man, somehow. I personally doubt that is how Apostle Paul was trying to insinuate that man should relate to woman in the Epistles, either. When he said a few things like "I (meaning he personally, not as a universal law from God) do not permit a woman to teach in the church" (1 Timothy 2:12).

Definitely agree with that! When I think about the wonders of all the created things, I know there has to be a God behind it. Then there are living things, especially animals and humans; our biology is so fascinating that I know there is no way it happened by mere chance. Only a perfect and great Heavenly Father could create so well such things as there are existing on this Earth.

Some things I noted:

1) 23 And Lamech said unto his wives: Adah and Zillah, hear my voice; Ye wives of Lamech, hearken unto my speech: For I have slain a man for wounding me, And a young man for bruising me: 24 If Cain shall be avenged sevenfold, Truly Lamech seventy and sevenfold.

Lamech is five generations after Cain. I wonder who this "man" who wounded him and "young man" who bruised him is. But later in chapter 6 the Lord makes it known that He is incensed because the earth was "filled with violence", indicated to be the chief form of wickedness in the world at the time, perhaps even the only form, compelling Him to wipe out all humanity but Noah and his family with the flood.

2) You can see from the below that approximately 1000 years had passed since the creation of Adam and Eve before Noah was born. Counting the all the years each of Noah's nine predecessors lived before siring their first son (or at the least ones noted in chapter 5 who eventually begat Noah), it's around 1000 total, I think. Just doing ballpark math in my head.
3 And Adam lived a hundred and thirty years, and begat [a son] in his own likeness, after his image; and called his name Seth: 4and the days of Adam after he begat Seth were eight hundred years: and he begat sons and daughters.

5 And all the days that Adam lived were nine hundred and thirty years: and he died.

6 And Seth lived a hundred and five years, and begat Enosh: 7 and Seth lived after he begat Enosh eight hundred and seven years, and begat sons and daughters: 8 and all the days of Seth were nine hundred and twelve years: and he died.

9 And Enosh lived ninety years, and begat Kenan.

10 and Enosh lived after he begat Kenan eight hundred and fifteen years, and begat sons and daughters: 11 and all the days of Enosh were nine hundred and five years: and he died.

12 And Kenan lived seventy years, and begat Mahalalel: 13 and Kenan lived after he begat Mahalalel eight hundred and forty years, and begat sons and daughters: 14 and all the days of Kenan were nine hundred and ten years: and he died.

15 And Mahalalel lived sixty and five years, and begat Jared: 16 And Mahalalel lived after he begat Jared eight hundred and thirty years, and begat sons and daughters: 17 and all the days of Mahalalel were eight hundred ninety and five years: and he died.

18 And Jared lived a hundred sixty and two years, and begat Enoch: 19 and Jared lived after he begat Enoch eight hundred years, and begat sons and daughters: 20 And all the days of Jared were nine hundred sixty and two years: and he died.

21 And Enoch lived sixty and five years, and begat Methuselah: 22 and Enoch walked with God after he begat Methuselah three hundred years, and begat sons and daughters: 23 and all the days of Enoch were three hundred sixty and five years: 24 and Enoch walked with God: and he was not; for God took him.

25 And Methuselah lived a hundred eighty and seven years, and begat Lamech: 26 and Methuselah lived after he begat Lamech seven hundred eighty and two years, and begat sons and daughters.

27 And all the days of Methuselah were nine hundred sixty and nine years: and he died.

28 And Lamech lived a hundred eighty and two years, and begat a son: 29 and he called his name Noah, saying, This same shall comfort us in our work and in the toil of our hands, [which cometh] because of the ground which Jehovah hath cursed.
And six hundred more years after that is when the Lord looks upon the world to see it filled with great violence through men. Although it just occurred to me that perhaps He does not mean physical violence only between men that is the great evil and corruption upon the Earth now. Do you think it possible that really all forms of wickedness existed and was rampant at the time, and that God means it all more as "violence" against His holy and good nature. That violence is more of a metaphorical term for sin?

I think that the term "violence" used here is meant as the wickedness of man and the sins all were committing against God. The NAB text in my Bible uses the word "depravity" instead, which certainly makes sense.

...and the mention of sons of God and Nephilim suggesting some sort of genetic tainting, although there is debate to whether the term, "Sons of God" refers to fallen angels or great rulers or kings...

...I got curious with the part where Lamech said seventy and sevenfold, reminded me of the verse where Jesus says to forgive seven times seven...what's the significance of the number 7? I like what this commentary from BibleHub regarding it...

Some translate, "seventy-seven times," making an allusion to the retribution exacted from Lamech: "If Cain shall be avenged sevenfold, truly Lamech seventy and sevenfold" (Genesis 4:24). Christian forgiveness must be extended as far as old-world vengeance. Mercy rejoices against judgment.

I don't know the accuracy of this...but at bible study . org they say that...
Seven is the number of completeness and perfection (both physical and spiritual). It derives much of its meaning from being tied directly to God's creation of all things.

Lastly, Lucas Graham's song oddly played in my head lol..."Once I was seven years old..."...

Indeed. :)

I dunno. Something about that song seems too self-indulgent for me to appreciate its sentiment (when I normally would in this day and age where so much pop music is limited solely to the subject of clubbing, drinking, and how much money I got), you know what I mean?

Day 3: January 30

Genesis 8 through 11

Note: I forgot to mention, everyone, just so we're up to speed, I have chosen to use a translation I never have before (I have only read KJV, NIV, and NASB previously), the Modern English Version. When searching for a new Bible in the bookstore some months ago when I first got this idea to lead another yearly reading thread, I assure you that I prayed honestly to the Spirit to show me if using the Modern English was acceptable or not, and He has affirmed that it is. I therefore do not expect that there are any serious (or deliberate) mistranslations that would lead readers to believe falsely on any important Bible subject.
