Hello, it's occurred to me that I don't know the difference between sheol, hades and hell.
You might add the lake of fire and the pit. Have you ever committed a sin and then gotten entangled in the most unpleasant consequences of that sin? That would be the lake of fire, I believe. I think the pit is the same thing, and maybe the three you mentioned.

Hello, it's occurred to me that I don't know the difference between sheol, hades and hell.
Sheol and Hades are different names for the same thing. Before Jesus, all disembodied souls inhabited a realm that can be said to be defined by the souls themselves. It's more a state of being than a place. Souls that were formed by wicked lives share a likeness and dwell together . in the same manner we have souls of faith who were in the bosom of Abraham. They share a likeness in faith.

The abode of the dead called Hades Sheol and Hell describe the same thing but hell has another meaning. When Jesus' soul became disembodied His entered the same place or state and defined it in a big way. He was revealed to all souls who had gone before Him. This is what is meant when it is said that Jesus decended into hell and preached the Gospel to the dead. He brought eternal judgement to all disembodied souls. Eternal death or eternal life. Those who lived righteous lives were taken out of there and went with Him to Heaven. Those left behind are in the hell as it is understood now. As a place for the damned. No soul there is resting in the peace possible before Christ entered and brought eternal judgement. Sheol and Hades no longer exist because souls there had not yet received judgement. Sheol and Hades turned into hell when only the damned were left there after Christ. Heaven for the saved and hell for the damned exist after Jesus' soul brought judgement. Hope this helped.

Thank you so much. That was a big help !

You mentioned the righteous people in Hades/Sheol were taken up with Jesus to heaven. How does that work if they didn't know the Gospel and as the bible tells us ''As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one - Romans 3:10''. Please anyone else reading this feel free to respond.

Thanks again :)

Hiya dreadnought, The lake of fire is formed after Jesus returns in Glory. It is reserved for souls that cooperated most intimately with Satan in his plan to be the cause of damnation to as many as possible. It forms at the end of time and history. It is hell to the extreme and happens after sin has reached it's most evil expression and those who acted it out have been conquered.

If they would have excepted Christ as Saviour during there earthly life had they had that opportunity, their soul then would be in a state that would accept Him and join His ascent to the Father

Edit to add: Complete in Thee, Thank you for that correction. Righteousness was a wrong term to apply to souls that had not yet received Christ. Your brother in Christ

The place for the unfortunate people who died be4 their dues.

Rev 20:13 And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works.

14 And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.

15 And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.

It's kind of been explained already, but just to emphasize a bit:

Scripture presents two kinds of hell:
1. Natural death as a consequence of sin

2. The second death as a judgement of all evil. This is referred to as a place of darkness, lake of fire, a place where the worm never dies, weeping and gnashing of teeth etc. The main difference is that natural death (1) will be thrown into the second death, along with all evildoers. It's an eternal separation from God that makes it hell, as God alone is the source of all goodness and life.

Hi

I would suggest Romans 3:24-26 helps with this:

"Yet God, in his grace, freely makes us right in his sight. He did this through Christ Jesus when he freed us from the penalty for our sins. For God presented Jesus as the sacrifice for sin. People are made right with God when they believe that Jesus sacrificed his life, shedding his blood. This sacrifice shows that God was being fair when he held back and did not punish those who sinned in times past, for he was looking ahead and including them in what he would do in this present time. God did this to demonstrate his righteousness, for he himself is fair and just, and he makes sinners right in his sight when they believe in Jesus." (New Living Translation)

I think some of what you read in Revelation, in figurative speech, describes what we will encounter in our own lives here on earth.

Death and Hades gave up the dead who were in them. They were judged, each one according to his works. Death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire. If anyone was not found written in the book of life, he was cast into the lake of fire.
Revelation 20:12-15

I have understood this life is the first death, Hades is the grave and hell is the fire lake where body and soul are destroyed.

And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.

Matt. 10:28

I agree, Revelation gives an account of the hidden forces driving human history. As, I think you are meaning, a little foretaste perhaps. Here, if we do, it's end is to keep us from being apart from God I think.

"HELL" research...

The word "hell" from the Greek is mentioned 88 times in the Bible: ...BUT...
64 times as the Hebrew word "Sheol" in the OT, ...the lowest grave in the earth
11 times as "Hades" in the NT
1 time as "Tartarus",
12 times as "Geenna".
RESULT: inaccurate translations of similar words!

Hades... the abode or state of the dead: informal ( often not capital ) "hell"

Tartarus ...from Latin, from Greek Tartaros, of obscure origin

Geenna ...OT: offal and refuse were slowly burned
NT Judaism: a place where the wicked are punished after death ...a place or state of pain and torment ... SYMBOLIC of "hell"+

The "lake of fire" of Revelation is clearly described.

1. It is a place created by God to restrain satan, demons, the un-holy trinity, death, and the
bad side of Abraham's Bosom...Hades.
2. It is a place of eternal separation from the TRI-UNE GOD's realm in the future New Heavens and the New Earth and the New Jerusalem
3. At the Great White Throne Judgment, God sentences unbelievers whose names are NOT written in the Lamb's Book of Life to dwell therein.

Revelation 20:15 (NASB); SEE ALSO 21:8
And if anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life (believers),
he (unbelievers) was thrown into the lake of fire.

Revelation 21:8 (NASB)
But for the cowardly and unbelieving and abominable and murderers and
immoral persons and sorcerers and idolaters and all liars (unsaved sinners),
their part will be in the lake that burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.”

And there is no provision for the removal of the SPIRITS sentenced to reside there

Matthew 13:50...Jesus' parable explained
and (angels) will throw them (tares=unbelievers) into the "furnace of fire";
in that PLACE there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

Hello Complete in Thee. Good dialogue, sincere exchange of ideas, good for all. I guess the word righteousness can be applied to a soul of the departed before Jesus. To Abraham and maybe those in his bosom
Romans 4:11
11 He received the sign of circumcision as a seal of the righteousness that he had by faith while he was still uncircumcised. The purpose was to make him the ancestor of all who believe without being circumcised and who thus have righteousness reckoned to them,

Hello, it's occurred to me that I don't know the difference between sheol, hades and hell.

She'ol - the common place of the dead in ancient Hebrew thought.

Hades - the Greek translation of She'ol used in the Septuagint and New Testament, taken from Greek mythology where Hades is the underworld, the place of the dead in Greek thought.

Hell - the Germanic translation of She'ol and Hades from the Norse/Germanic Hel, the underworld. Used in many Germanic languages, including English, to translate She'ol, Hades, Gehenna, and Tartarus. Because of this the word can be somewhat ambiguous; where in the Jewish view of Jesus' time She'ol was the place of the dead divided between Gan-Eden or Paradise (the resting place of the righteous dead) and Ge-Hinnom or Gehenna (the abode of the wicked dead), the word "hell" has been used to translate the general place of the dead, the specific place of the wicked dead, as well as to describe the ultimate state of the wicked. Meaning that when talking about "hell" it's important to ask what one means when they say "hell".

But I don't just mean a foretaste. I think some of the things in Revelation actually describe, in figurative language, what happens in this life.
