When did people stop caring about their own legacy?

When did all these perpetrators of assault stop caring about what others would think of them, of what their children would hear of them, and what history may say of them? Our actions, every action we take is a legacy and every interaction we have with another person is our chance to leave a print on another human being.

It appears that all too many people were under the impression that their misdeeds would never be revealed or that their actions were excusable. I personally don't know which. But either way, it sickens me.

I don't think that this is a sign that the "world is moving away from God" at all. This nonsense has been happening for decades in the workplace (probably since women entered it in a meaningful way). I think, from a Christian perspective, it should be a sign post of how far we ALREADY are from God. And here we are with an opportunity to learn from all this garbage; a chance to reflect on the poisonous messages we are giving to coming generations. These messages that seem so innocuous, innocent and may even feel just...right. But it is those very messages that are excusing and exacerbating this kind of behaviour.

Why don't we teach our kids about legacy anymore? I've seen enough bloody memes going through facebook about it; why aren't meaningful discussions being had about it?

In general I don't care about my legacy or how I am remembered in history. I mean yes, people think I'm a great guy and what not. But a legacy is all pointless given in the end all history will be gone after everything is destroyed. The only real importance in life is, at least for me, leading others to salvation. Thats the only history that will carry over into whats next.

I do know some have asked me about having kids and my legacy that way. After I pass and my wife passes, no one will probably remember us since we have no kids to carry on the history of my wife and I. Again, thats ok with me.

With that said I can agree obviously that your misdeeds are something you should care about. Though lets be honest, if your not here after you die then people are free to think whatever they wish. Its not like it affects anything. Not that it should give people an excuse to do misdeeds of course. Legacy or not we should still try to lead good lives.

What do you think social media are?

They are nothing but a desperate attempt of everyone to write their own history.

Does refusing to be tarred with collective guilt/responsibility just because you happen to have the same gender as someone who’s done something bad count as caring about your legacy?

Interesting point. I'd be inclined to think that most people are NOT thinking in terms of creating their history. I honestly don't think people are anywhere NEAR That considered when posting anything online.

Besides that though, the idea that we write our legacy with words is utterly laughable to me. It's our actions that will eventually speak louder than our words.

Kind of a pathetic legacy. I mean in only my opinion. I can understand the desire fight the point, but to boil down your life to that seems....like a serious waste of energy.
I mean, if you TRULY believe you aren't guilty of it, why does it weigh on you so hard anyways? Is someone trying to keep you down in a serious and meaningful way?

A legacy is something that is handed down from the past. I will leave a material legacy for my kids, but unless they continue honoring their namesake in their own lives the legacy of my good name will die with me. However one's reputation is usually only known by a few and is soon forgotten, unless you are a notable public figure.

I think Shakespeare is more correct than the OT:

"The evil that men do lives after them;
The good is oft interrèd with their bones..."

Julius Caesar, Act III.

A distinction without a difference.

You don’t see a problem with collectively guilting people?

I think history shows why that is a bad idea.

And if nothing else, it does show that people are concerned about their reputation and legacy, just not in whatever faddish ways people think one should care about their reputation and legacy.

Well, yes. My problem with collective guilt, however, is that people who should be held directly responsible, rarely are. And being saddled by "collective guilt" really suggests that there has been some kinda fairly gross injustice against one group. But our focus then becomes on how we "feel bad" instead of the ACTUAL injustice that occurred against that group.
Again, I understand the problem with it. Just not wanting to make it part of a legacy.

I don't think it does really. Actions speak louder than words anyways.

Yeah that’s a good take on it - it’s like culpability carpet-bombing.
