Question: Do you do this sort of thing or am I just weird?

I cannot tell you how many times I have had to run back in the store because I forgot to take something out of the cart or they forgot to charge me for something. I'm almost OCD about it. I had to do errands today and every place I went was packed to the rafters. I go to unload my items and there is a jar of spice that was behind my purse and I forgot to take out of the cart. 2.98. I was so ready to go home and almost did but I forced myself to go back in the store, wait in line and pay. The whole time I try to reason why I should of just left and not worried about it. But I would of thought about it every time I used it. Do honest mistakes like this really matter? Am I being scrupulous? Or am
I just a weird person?

Has this happened to you? How do you react?

I think it's on the store to see that the employees ring things up right. That said, I have done similar things. I think it's at your discretion where to draw the line (on your way out the door, in the car, at home, a year later)...

Not sure of RC teaching on this!

I think once you realize the mistake was made, you try to correct it? I was unloading in the parking lot and discovered it. I was so tempted to just leave though!

One time, I was not charged for about 30 dollars of pet food so I trudge back in. You should of seen the look on that cashier's face. She looked at me like I was a nut.

My wife and I do the same. It’s simple honesty, and helps us keep a clear conscience (at least in this respect). Not weird at all to my way of thinking.

I've had to correct cashiers who give me too much money back. I think it's better to take the high road in those circumstances.

I think most people here seem to be subject to nothing more than the simple laws of honesty.

I think it's when you drive out of the new car yard with your groceries in the boot (trunk to Americans) and then realise that you haven't paid for the car that you really have an ethical issue. "Should I go back and pay for the car or not?"

Lol!
Oh yeah. I’ve gone back in several times.
I never thought it was a big deal until I overheard my kids bragging one day, “My mom even goes all the way back in to the store just to pay!!”

Maybe you have a slightly different system in the US compared to Australia. Over here the cashiers usually pack the items into bags of some sort (these days often supplied by the customer - store supplied plastic bags are gradually being outlawed), so it's unusual for items to go into the trolley by themselves (I'm talking groceries here).

But my wife always goes through the shopping dockets afterwards. Sometimes she finds an error - the store might not have charged her for something, or they might have charged her for something she didn't buy, or maybe double charged (easy enough to do with the scanning devices - all the cashier has to do is momentarily hesitate when swiping). Then she has an ethical issue - do I go back and complain, or do I own up.

Usually it's a compromise - the chances are we'll probably come out about even - the store will have failed to charge us for something, but a couple of months later we'll pay twice for something, or be charged for an item some other customer had put on the counter. And if a store has a turnover of millions of dollars a week, these occasional sorts of minor quibbles aren't going to make much difference.

So usually she just ignores it.

For several times, I have been overpaid my changes by shops, and I was already out of the shops. Yet I went back in to give them back the overpaid amount. Nobody else would do that (except you people).

I'm not trying to toot my own horn that's for sure. I'd rather not to be honest but it does cause me a lot of anxiety for some reason.

That's a good thing to do, and definitely more convenient than sending back the money to them by post.

You people?

I meant we Christians :)
