What people fail to realize about this is that the USA and every president for the past twenty and more years has agreed to recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capitol BUT stayed that action hoping that the Arabs would enter into a serious peace process.

It never developed. Instead, there have been rocket attacks, assassinations, street riots, intifadas, 'days of rage,' etc. etc. throughout the era.

So what the president is doing now is saying, in effect, the policy of staying or delaying the move that just about all American politicians of either party have supported wasn't reciprocated, so it is time to try something else.

And it's working well so far.

Maybe we should wait a while and see how this situation develops until we pass judgement, one way or another.

Perhaps they'll untwist their knickers and start to cope with the new situation.

Or perhaps they start killing each other in the streets.

The old approach was barely keeping the status quo, but then again, when you're sitting at the side of a cliff, keeping the status quo isn't such a bad thing...

Sadly we even had an incident here in the Netherlands, which is unusual.

Police have arrested a 29-year-old man who smashed the window of a kosher restaurant in the south of Amsterdam on Thursday morning.

The man, who was waving a Palestinian flag and a piece of wood, smashed several windows in the Hacarmel restaurant shortly before 11am. One eyewitness told DutchNews.nl she saw the man surrounded by around 10 others. ‘The atmosphere was definitely threatening,’ she said.

It may depend on what that cliff is. If that status quo, that cliff, amounted to peace, you might be right. But there is no peace. And the efforts to get the two sides to find a settlement has gone on for many decades.

It's true that these things come in waves of action interrupted by temporary cessations, although there have been murders of people on the street by Islamists relatively recently.
That doesn't get as much attention outside of Israel as does full-scale rioting.

Yet a peace agreement is what's hoped for, and if keeping the capitol of Israel and/or a Palestinian state were something that they could negotiate as part of a wider peace settlement, that seemed good.

Jerusalem is the capital. It's always been the capital. The government operates out of Jerusalem, not Tel Aviv. All Trump did was acknowledge this.

Actually, it was technically Bill Clinton that recognized Jerusalem as the capital. He even created the document that would move the embassy, but set a waiver that the President would sign to keep it in Tel Aviv, to avoid stoking tensions. The idea was that the President would have the wisdom to know the right time to move it. Sadly, this was clearly done to express the right's distaste for Muslims.

Or maybe, just maybe, he's a big fan of Israel like many on the right, and it's pandering to the pro-Israel side of the party.

Or maybe, just maybe, he hates Muslims like many on the right, and it's pandering to the anti-Muslim side of the party. It can be both at once!
