Many articles on this, here's one from the Guardian
Suspended dengue vaccine was given to 730,000 children, Philippines says
In brief Dengue can be caused by 4 strains of virus, but unusually getting a second infection with a different strain can result in much more sever disease. the Sanofi vaccine appears to flip this, protecting people with prior disease but making novel challenge more severe...and they have known about the possibility for a year.
Not sure if the Philippines government isn't at least partly to blame, but still.
I've also started this thread to get out ahead of the anit-vaxxer reality deniers who will undoubtedly ignore the spectacular complexities surrounding this virus and disease and equate it with all other vaccines ever.
Also worth noting if you live in the Philippines and are over 9, there's a 90% chance you have encountered the virus, and wordwide it kills about 20000 people. At least so far, the vaccine hasn't killed anyone.
