Mary was “ with child”. Joseph was certain that Mary had done wrong. He was certainof this until the Angel convinced him otherwise..in the interim hadJoseph been a good law- keeper,he would have seen to it that Mary would be stoned to death....that was THE LAW.!...Fortunatly for all concerned Joseph ignored THE LAW and chose compassion instead.Love and compassion will always trump law..anyone got any other examples to show what God really wants....seems to me an ounce of kindness and compassion is worth more than 50 lbs of law-keeping

I don't think Joseph ignored the law. What I do think is that we have a somewhat mistaken idea about how Moses' Law was administered. Because Joseph was the offended party I believe it was his choice whether he brought charges of adulatory before the Judges or could choose to quietly divorce her which only consisted of writing her a divorce decree and having it witnessed with the signatures of two witnesses. He wouldn't have to declare why he was divorcing her as Moses permitted divorce for 'just' cause according to the Pharisees.
I could be wrong but that is the way it appears to me.

Good points....still I believe it is a good example of the”spirit of the law” vs the “letterof the law”which was my point.seems like the provisions Moses provided incorporated the correct spirit......compassion

Mostly agree except about the stoning part.

Only adultery was punishable by stoning. Being pregnant without adultery was not punishable by stoning. I believe there had to be witnesses to an Adultery for someone to be stoned as well.

Another issue is that Mary was engaged to be married but not actually married yet so Adultery couldn't apply anyways.

Joseph wasn't married.

Joseph wasn't married.

Betrothal in those days was being married without the sex. To get unbetrothed you had to show just cause.

Bible Dictionary:
5654 betrothal. The period of engagement preceding marriage; betrothal was a binding contract established between two families and sealed by the exchange of gifts. During this period the couple did not live together; sexual relations with each other at this stage was regarded as equivalent to adultery.

Joseph wasn't married.
Very different than our modern engagements, more like when families promised their children into marriages that wouldn't happen until many years later but were legal contacts usually between monarchs and the very wealthy.

This is what I understand of the Jewish tradition and Torah law of that time.
They were engaged, which was the same legal obligation as a consummated marriage.
If it wasn't Joseph would not have considered quietly divorcing [putting away] Mary.

Mat 1:18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost.
Mat 1:19 Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a publick example, was minded to put her away privily.

Mat 5:31 It hath been said, Whosoever shall put away his wife, let him give her a writing of divorcement:

Like I said Joseph was not married thus no divorce or Adultery/stoning was possible.

The word also means simply to release or send away. I highly doubt a divorce was needed in this situation.

Like I said Joseph was not married thus no divorce or Adultery/stoning was possible.

It was a binding contract. It would have been considered adultery.

Though there were no sexual relations within the betrothal period, the commitment was regarded almost as seriously as marriage and infidelity of a betrothed partner was treated as adultery.

Fair enough.

Another example would be here:

Joh 8:3 And the scribes and Pharisees brought unto him a woman taken in adultery; and when they had set her in the midst,
Joh 8:4 They say unto him, Master, this woman was taken in adultery, in the very act.
Joh 8:5 Now Moses in the law commanded us, that such should be stoned: but what sayest thou?
Joh 8:6 This they said, tempting him, that they might have to accuse him. But Jesus stooped down, and with his finger wrote on the ground, as though he heard them not.
Joh 8:7 So when they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said unto them, He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her.
Joh 8:8 And again he stooped down, and wrote on the ground.
Joh 8:9 And they which heard it, being convicted by their own conscience, went out one by one, beginning at the eldest, even unto the last: and Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst.
Joh 8:10 When Jesus had lifted up himself, and saw none but the woman, he said unto her, Woman, where are those thine accusers? hath no man condemned thee?
Joh 8:11 She said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said unto her, Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more.

And here:

Mat 12:3 But he said unto them, Have ye not read what David did, when he was an hungred, and they that were with him;
Mat 12:4 How he entered into the house of God, and did eat the shewbread, which was not lawful for him to eat, neither for them which were with him, but only for the priests?
Mat 12:5 Or have ye not read in the law, how that on the sabbath days the priests in the temple profane the sabbath, and are blameless?

Betrothal was much more binding than our engagements. Get you head out of the 21st century. LOL Go back a few thousand years and read all the verses around Deut. 24 about everything you ever wanted to know about the whole process.

Nothing in the chapter addresses fiance's, only those who are already married.
