More than 300 were killed when a mosque was bombed in Egypt today.

Prayers for the recovery of those who were injured and for the families of those who were killed.

The previous attacks in Sinai mostly targeted security forces and members of Egypt's Coptic Christians minority.

However, mosques in North Sinai's Sheikh Zuweid town have also been attacked.

The mosque may also have been targeted because it followed a Sufi sect. Sufis are considered infidels by groups such as ISIL.

Egypt vows to avenge Sinai mosque massacre

Common aggressor.

It seems ISIS attacked and killed these Muslims according to CNN.

Are we still sure ISIS is a Muslim cause representing Islam?

"According to the official narrative, the death toll from the attack, the bloodiest in modern Egyptian history, stands at 305, including 27 children.

It's possible that they specifically targeted the al Rawda mosque because it is affiliated with a local Sufi order, the Jaririya. Sufis are Islamic mystics and have traditionally shunned violence. ISIS considers Sufis to be heretics, and in Syria and Iraq, they have destroyed Sufi shrines and bulldozed or dynamited the tombs of Sufi saints.

"With the Christian attacks," says Hellyer, "it seemed aimed at creating some sort of divide within Egyptian society the radical groups could then take advantage of. They failed. Now they're going after anybody that doesn't support what they want to do.""

From what I read these folks were targetted because they were Sufi's.

Sufis are a mystical interpretation of Islam that doesn't necessarily share the ideals of Salafist fundamentalists. Educated people in the Islamic world often turn to Sufism to make sense of a non-fundamentalist interpretation of Islam. So it's not hard to see why they were targeted. The terrorists are trying to control the terms of discourse in their societies, to make themselves the only option. I hope it does not work, and that the Egyptian people would realize the roots of religious violence comes from an extremism that devalues human life. Murder can never be made holy.

Sufis are mystics with some serious occult supernatural connections. I do NOT want to see them radicalized.

What makes you think the intent of the terrorists is to radicalize them? The intent was to suppress them. Sufism is a threat to ISIL/ISIS and Salafism, since it is an internally focused religious ideology rather than focused externally on political power. "Sufi radical" is practically an oxymoron.

I know the intent. What I am hoping it is that it does not backfire and radicalize the Sufis. How do you deal with an entirely supernatural terror threat?

Sufis do not share the values of Salafism. They view the real meaning of Islam to be a strictly internal struggle within man, to achieve union with God. Whereas Salafism focuses on creating a "godly society" here on earth where justice, on their terms, flourishes, so that the community as a whole will withstand the final judgment. One is mystical, the other is political.

Indiscriminate killing to uphold some abstract notion of justice is abhorent to sufis. It's like Jesus telling his disciples to wash the inside of the cup first, before washing the outside.

I agree. But Salafisim Islam does not adhere to supernatural (demonic) power the way Sufis do.

That adherence is one reason the more stringent factions of Suni Islam (ISIS, Wahabi, Al Qeda, Taliban) consider them to be heretics
