An Indiana hospital system says a nurse is no longer an employee after she was tied to a message on Twitter claiming white women are raising sons “with the HIGHEST propensity to be a terrorist, rapist, racist, killer, and domestic violence all star.”

Officials at Indiana University Health said over the weekend they were investigating “several troubling posts on social media” that appeared to be made by a recently hired employee identified in news reports as Taiyesha Baker. IU Health spokesman Jason Fechner confirmed Monday that the nurse no longer works at Indiana University Health Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis but he would not say whether she was fired, citing company policies.

The controversial tweet, which the Indianapolis Star reported was posted on an account named “Night Nurse,” said: “Every white woman raises a detriment to society when they raise a son. Someone with the HIGHEST propensity to be a terrorist, rapist, racist, killer, and domestic violence all star. Historically every son you had should be sacrificed to the wolves B‑‑‑‑.”

Freedom of Speech ~ yep afforded.

Consequences for things chosen to speak ~ yep there are consequences.

Night Nurse, being newly hired, should have been very aware of the Hospitals code of conduct requirements that she agree to abide by, as an employee.

Only Christ can fix hate. Hope the "nurse", discovers Christ Jesus.

Upholding free speech has more to do with preventing the government from dictating and controlling the speech of the populace than limiting the natural consequences (good or bad) of an individual's words. The nurse spoke her mind and no government agency intervened to censor or prevent her from doing so. That's as it should be. But as has been explained already in this thread, the nurse's right to free speech does not protect her from the negative responses from others her words provoke. No one should be able to physically prevent her from airing her views, to squelch by force her ability to say what she thinks, but this doesn't mean everyone must agree with her and/or respond passively to what she's said.

No. The first amendment constrains only government. Private businesses have always fired people with unapproved personal opinions that they don't keep to themselves.

That hospital is associated with Indiana University, but is actually a private, non-profit hospital itself.

So, I almost think we live in different worlds. I work in a nursing home and. If I went up to the administrator and made ethnic slurs to him and implied that others who shared his Hispanic heritage were dangerous (whatever Trump's most inflammatory comments about undocumented immigrants applied to all)... I would not expect to need to check to see if my clothes were clean for work the next day before I went to bed that night. This is within my employer's rights. Just because this nurse works for a hospital associated with a state university doesn"t mean the employer can't fire her for vile comments about a group of the children she works with. If you think this consult a lawyer.

We do not leave that amount of protection from ignorant people. We are more than capable of providing for ourselves.

Maybe. I can see people's points here for sure. She sounds like a pretty despicable piece of work.
But overall, I think that the criteria is that she is able to do her job, even for people she does not like due to her prejudice. If people are truly at risk because of her attitude, then that is more than enough reason to fire her.
We often fall into living fairly segregated lives in our multi-cultural cities. It is almost natural that this is the case. People immigrating from the Philippines orIran, for examples, will tend to have their bar-b-q's and celebrations with people who are like them in attitudes and customs. The mindlessness of the sex drive tends to mix things up a bit for sure, but for the most part it is the work place that is the real melting pot in North America. The law is always there as a last resort to deal with the truly evil, but assuming that the woman in the OP is more ignorant than anything else, she is going to meet a lot of white people on the job. Some will be scum, some will be angels, some will be just kind of normal and boring. After a while though, it takes a lot of energy to maintain one's ignorance in the fact of so many people that are not at all like the monsters that one's prejudices painted them as.
The thing about racism is not that it is evil, which always it is in effect, but that is ultimately really, really dumb. Race does not exist. Some Chinese are not nerdy at all and are actually pretty cool. Some blacks have two left feet. And the upper lips of some Brits are not very stiff at all. It is easy to remain stupid in the unicultural ghettoes that make up our multicultural cities. It is much harder to keep up the stupid when you are dealing with people of different backgrounds every day.
Believing in freedom is the ultimate antidote from the 'Mark of the Beast' kind of world arising where everybody has got to believe and mouth the official line in order to get paid. Freedom is messy, but I have seen the workplace change attitudes.

Except that this woman did not go to an all-black nursing college, because there aren't such. Like the 9/11 terrorists, she can't claim ignorance.

Look, I remember when there were signs on buildings saying "White" and "Colored." I remember when there were places downtown I could not go because I am black.

When those rules were struck down, no doubt there were a heck of a lot of white people around me who hated it. The waitresses in the newly integrated restaurants. The teachers in the schools. The pharmacists in the drug stores. The nurses in the hospitals. But we had to trust them to do their jobs properly. Which as far as we could tell, they did.

But had any of them made this same kind of public outcry, we certainly wouldn't have trusted that person.

In my cranky old age, I'm becoming less willing to ignore what Jesus said about that. Some folks who claim to be doing things in the name of Jesus don't actually know Him. He said that, too.

There are some actions so heinous that there is no way anyone filled with the Holy Spirit could have done them. Period. There is no honorable debate on the matter. There are some acts of evil that take such deep intent, such deep and continuous hatred for other human beings, that there is no way anyone filled with the Spirit of God could have done them.

The men who did this were not Christian.

These people were not Christian.

And if they died without ever repented of those acts, then they died without with the Spirit of God.

As others have explained, apparently not when it comes to the work force and social media. I remember this article from a few years ago about a teacher getting fired for writing her thoughts on homosexuality on her personal facebook. Likewise, this teacher was fired for promoting LGBT rights. On the other hand, one teacher fired for professing her personal beliefs on social media agreed with you and took it to court for two years, where the law ruled on her side that it is not okay to fire someone for their personal beliefs.

I know the story of yours is about a nurse, but similar issue. This nurse's comments were pretty hateful though, and I would worry about her being in charge of infant care if she feels this way about white babies.
