Matthew17:1 "And after six days Jesus taketh them up into an high mountain apart," Jesus separates these three disciples from the rest of the disciples. The only reason the disciples were brought there was to be a witness to the transforming of Christ's body following the resurrection. Verse 2 "And was transfigured before them: and His face did shine as the sun, and His raiment was white as the light." The transfiguration of Jesus body lets these three disciples know that through the resurrection His flesh body would be transformed, for more documentation lets read Acts2:31 "He seeing this before, spake of the resurrection of Christ, that His soul was not left in hell, neither His flesh did see corruption. Jesus flesh did not decay, but was transformed, and that is why the transfiguration took place, Peter, James and John were taken by Jesus up on the mountain, three they witness Jesus with Moses and Elias, and the transfigured physical body of Jesus before them and His raiment was white as the light." This is hell, people that are in this place did not overcome, and they are there by their own choice. They did not accept Christ, and they would not repent.
