Australia has strongly voted in favour of Same Sex Marriage in its plebesite. The next stage is legislation.

This question, in my opinion, is one of justice not morality. The people of Australia have voted in favour of justice. Morality is a personal choice.

Morals should be held in common, otherwise the morals of a society crumble, as they have in the West.

One of the most surprising things about this result is that it was not part of an official vote or a plebiscite or a referendum. The results are not binding on the government. In theory parliament could still vote no

Australians were asked to participate in a completely voluntary postal survey on Same Sex Marriage. In effect a giant opinion poll.

In Australia voting is normally compulsory. In spite of being completely voluntary and non binding (on the government), 80% of Australians participated and voted overwhelmingly (62%=Yes; 38%= No) in favour of same sex marriage.

The 80% voluntary participation rate sets some sort of world record.

I hear that a lot. Can you explain what you mean or why you feel that morals in the West have crumbled compared to an era you're thinking about

Sure. To borrow a term from Ralph Ellison, over-civilization has claimed many victims in the West. We have same-sex marriage, transgenderism, and more. These would be assumed to be morally wrong in times past. They are debated or assumed to morally right now. It's as if our morals have declined in proportion to our increase in college graduates and living standards.

The USA never had morals to be honest. Since this land was stolen. And built on murders rape and slavery. Gays were still gay. Except they had to hide it. So they wouldn't get harassed or killed. Transgender people would be sneaky. So they wouldn't get killed. Lets not forget men and women sneaking off to have affairs. It was just more hushed up.

He's right, you know. In a way.

If you define "morals" as a certain set of behavioral rules and "crumbling" as the neglect to follow this specific set, then morals have indeed crumbled. Not only in the West, and not only in regard to a certain era.

Morals are constantly crumbling everywhere.

I am not quite sure about the "victims" he mentioned though.
There once was an era when it was "moral" to acknowledge the divine right of kings and the reverence they were due.
If we follow this line of reasoning, every single American since 1776 is a victim of crumbling morals.

That said... Hurray for Australia!

I understand your point. But if you compare to biblical times, we don't do slavery, or stone people, women are treated more fairly, children are not forced to work and are educated etc... Even if you compare to my g grand father's time.. there isn't a world war, women have the vote as do Negroid races, etc etc. While I get your disappointment in Australia's decision, I think our society is still positively evolving in lots of ways.

That's not what I was talking about. I was hinting at issues like accepting integrated schools and women being allowed to vote.
The women's suffrage movement has its roots in the Wesleyan Church, with Seneca Falls meeting. The participants were hardly liberals by modern standards.
School integration continues to be opposed by elites, conservative and liberal alike.

You are right. They were liberal by the standards of that time and place. Political and religious standards do vary by time and place and are in near constant evolution.

The country has taken many steps forward from its past. Our history will always be with us, but the county also has progressed. Every part of the world has ugly parts. So, if we are using past history as a gauge? No country does. (Shrugs)

Many of what you are stating happens the same way today in some of parts of the world.

I thought they had already done this.
Nope. Australia has been discussing legalizing SSM for a few years now and it was gaining more and more momentum. So parliamant had a useless and expensive non-binding, optional poll that was sent to everyone in Australia back in, IIRC, October. The results just got released. With 80% of the population replying and showing what was already known (overwhelming approval), the Australian parliament now has a clear message to follow.

It's fine to be liberal on what's purely cultural, such voting being limited to male property owners. Certain moral standards though stand (or should stand) regardless of time and place.
