Am I the only one who's just absolutely sick to death of having cliches thrown in my face every time I try to have a conversation about how I'm feeling?

For the most part, I keep to myself anymore and make no effort at all to make my feelings known or try to talk to anyone, even if I really need to.

Twice lately though I let my guard down and tried to talk to someone about some stuff that had been bothering me and as expected, got hit with one cliche after another. The second conversation I even mentioned that cliches really don't make someone feel better when they are angry or upset and the person just continued to spout them out.

Am I the only one who feels this way? It's just gotten so old over the years.

No, you're not the only one seeing this ---
fewer and fewer people care or know how to care, or know how to share nurturing, caring, edifying, uplifting experiential knowledge of Jesus, His Way, and Life in YHWH's Kingdom.

"As lawlessness increases, the LOVE of MANY grows COLD."

You are definitely not alone. I think some people use cliches, because it's just too much work to come up with something that might actually help. They might actually have to go out of their way to be truly sympathetic. The cliche that drives me the most crazy is: "What doesn't kill you, makes you stronger".

Yeah yeah, we've heard it before...No, I'm totally joking Brother! You're right. That's mostly all what people know nowadays is catch phrases. They've used them to de-educate people, to perpetuate lies, and to take away peoples ability to think for themselves.

You're 43? I'M 55. We may be the last generation to have learned critical thinking. Your own critical thinking is all over your post. Ah but be encouraged Brother. You're not stupid. At least we have the Almighty God inside of us and beside us.

Evil spirits may be easy to deal with, but the people nowadays...oh my God. Scripture is right. Gross darkness covers the people. Even many adults. They have taught people to think in fantasy and it's hard to deal with that in people. We see a lot of it even here on this board.

People read scripture and then it's almost like they just make up in their head what they want it to mean. It is terrible!

It is very annoying.

I think sometimes people just want to be helpful, but they don't know how so they spit out whatever their go-to response is, and it is usually something popular that sounds wise or witty.

Other times I think it is people's impatience. They want whatever is troubling you to be solved quickly so they can move on and not feel obligated to be there for you.

It can also be used as subtle way to pass judgement. If something is wrong or you are suffering, then it must because of something you aren't doing or something you did wrong or it's your attitude or lack of faith. If they can tell you something to do or how to cope, then they are reminding you that this is your fault and here is how you correct yourself, without looking like that is what they are doing.

Some that I hate:
"Let go and let God."
"God never gives you more than you can bare." (which is not in the Bible, by they way)

I agree with you Sister for the most part. That last line of yours though. It's interesting that you bring that up, for I have been pondering that off and on for awhile and am actually undecided on it. Perhaps you can share your perspective with me on this? I know the classic 1 Corinthians 10:13 seems to say that He wont put more upon us than we can bear...but there's many other places in scripture which speaks of Him breaking us. Chopping us down to the ground to humble us and prove that we can not do it, we need Him! But this 1 Corinthians verse seems contradictory to that. So...I wonder if that passage is only specifically talking about idolatry?
(One thing I know from experience is that, any time there's a seemingly contradiction, that it really isn't, it's just me, not understanding, lol)

1 Corinthians 10:12-14
12 Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall.

13 There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.

14 Wherefore, my dearly beloved, flee from idolatry.../

For the cliche about not having more than you can bear, I think it depends on what is meant by the person who is speaking it.

When it comes to temptation to sin, I believe the Scripture you quoted, and God will not allow us to be tempted more than we are capable of withstanding and will provide a way to avoided if we ask.

Most often when I hear that cliche, though, it is in regard to some traumatic or trying situation. In that case, I don't know that the Bible says anything about how much God will allow to happen to a person. What the Bible does say is that his grace is sufficient, which does not speak the individual's ability to bear the circumstances, but God ability to help. It can be found in 2 Corinthians 12:7-10

The Bible also says that we won't go through things alone. This is promised to the Israelites in the Old Testament and quoted again in the New Testament. Duet 31:6 and Hebrews 13:5

For me this means that there are things we go through that we cannot handle, but that God helps us through it.

That makes sense to me.

Geez, I just got mine today. My dad is on his death bed so I have to make a trip +100 miles to settle things and pray for my dad. He was saved years back but rejected Jesus after his wife divorced him and he chose to blame God.

So...pray for me and my dad, that all goes well and that he is willing to surrender to Jesus again.
And for my protection on the trip. I have one of those old trucks that runs on faith...

Thank you Brothers and Sisters. It may be a few days or more until I'm back. I don't think he has a computer.

Dunno if was my prayers or you Brother's & Sisters...but on the way up yesterday, I was praying on the highway and asked for protection against accidents, seizures, police (lol) anything...then I seen in my mind's eye a blue bubble form around the truck, extending out perhaps 10’ all directions. And peace came over me. ...That was cool.

Oh, man, SO this part. I was on a date with a woman and we got to talking about my father who had passed a way a few years ago. He had heart issues, and her response was something like the above. She said something about how he was probably a negative person and had "cursed" himself into an unhealthy state.

She even mentioned how a woman, who had a Halloween party, that was "cursed" by throwing such an unGodly party at her place, that she was hospitalized the day after. I was like, "No, she is physically unhealthy woman ( chronically obese ), and that was the reason (Diabetes)". Don't know where she got that from.

Needless to say, there was no 2nd date.

Some people have what I consider to be very strange ideas. Some of this is teaching that comes from both Christian and secular teachers. The last 5 years I've been being friends in the Tantra and personal growth community. There is some of that teaching in those groups about how we are personally responsible for all the sickness that happens to us. If we eat better, think better, respect our boundaries, etc. that we will be healed and live healthier. There is some truth to that, but I don't see it as a cure all. There is a point where we need Jesus to heal us and some will take certain health problems to the grave no matter what we try. I guess I don't think people know all the answers to these issues and to imply they do bothers me quite a bit at times.

People take 1 Corinthians 10:13 out of context constantly. It's not that God doesn't give us more than we can bear. Look around you, people in dire straits are everywhere, so that's just a bunch of bunk, obviously. Rather, Paul says that He'll never TEMPT us beyond what we can bear. In other words, if some guy is trying to get fresh, there'll be a moment, regardless of how minute, when I can clearly decide that this is wrong (being unwed, of course). We may get mad at a coworker (as I tend to, unfortunately), but there'll be an instant where we can either decide to lash out or to withhold our comments until we've cooled down. That's the problem w/ taking God's Word out of context, though.

WOW .. pinback ... actually including observation of people's experiences to help understand what the Bible is saying. I don't see that as often as I'd like. I see to read people people denying reality to keep their understanding of the Bible more often. After all all truth is God's truth.

what is truth? maybe you just assumed what people told you was true?

No the test is more does it feel true to me from what I've learned over the years. Since I have studied the Bible for 50 years, I know something of what it says.

confirmation bias is a problem here. Mormons, catholics, JWs, will all confirm that their way is true, because they *know*.
