What did Jesus mean when he said "I have fulfilled the law"?

In Matthew 5:17 Jesus says:

"Do not think I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets. I have come not to destroy but to fulfill."

So, how exactly did Jesus fulfill the law? Was it because Jesus kept the law perfectly? If the law is fulfilled by Jesus how do we now keep the law? By loving our neighbor? Discuss.

I think he meant it in the same way said Paul this phrase using the same Greek word

Romans 15:19
Through mighty signs and wonders, by the power of the Spirit of God; so that from Jerusalem, and round about unto Illyricum, I have fully preached the gospel of Christ.

Some translations use the word "fulfill"

Paul fulfilled, or fully preached, the gospel just like Christ fulfilled/fully preached the Law & Prophets

Romans 15:19 by the power of signs and wonders, through the power of the Spirit of God. So from Jerusalem all the way around to Illyricum, I have fully proclaimed the gospel of Christ.

If we take an honest look at what Christ said, what he means by fulfill is the opposite of what it means to abolish it and get rid of it

What is the opposite of abolish and to do away with? To uphold it, to keep it in place, to magnify it, to fully preach it etc

I see many people ignoring his plain words of "do not think that I have come to abolish the law and prophets" by insisting that fulfill means to get rid of, or do away with, when Christ himself said that he did NOT come to get rid of it

Remember "fulfill" is mistranslated on purpose billions of times every day.
Might be best for a while to ignore (or simply leave it to God) that word/concept since men fail to understand it ,

unless God grants it by grace and gives understanding to a man, man is unable to grasp it.

So if the law was never fulfilled how do we as Christians fulfill the law?

in a nutshell, loving God(Deuteronomy 6:4-5) & loving our neighbor as ourselves is fulfilling the law & prophets.

The Messiah was teaching the Law and Prophets properly. By the time he was on the scene, the Pharisees had distorted the Law & Prophets and were teaching contrary to them.

When you read Matthew 5, and study the Law & Prophets in light of what Christ said in Matthew 5, you will see that he is teaching the proper understanding of the Law and Prophets.

Christ didn't teach in opposition to Moses and the Prophets - his teachings are in harmony with Moses and the Prophets

Let's look at Matthew 5:17 and use the phrase "fully preach"
AND fully keep the law. DO GOD'S WORD. Be a DOER, not just a HEARER.....
AS the Apostles noted later , inspired word from YHWH,

"do we (ekklesia by God's Will born again, set apart by Him for Himself) then neglect the TORAH? NO! We acknowledge the TORAH and fulfill TORAH by faith !"
Romans 3:31 Do we, then, nullify the law by this faith? Not ... - Bible Hub
biblehub.com/romans/3-31.htm
Well then, if we emphasize faith, does this mean that we can forget about the law? Of course not! In fact, only when we have faith do we truly fulfill the law.

I believe that Christ fullfilled the Law by living it ... certainly in the sense that the Law was an expression of God's will.

He also fullfilled the Law by DYING for our infractions of it (i.e. paying the price that the Law demanded for our disobedience). He was the SCAPEGOAT ... that Israel sent out of the camp annually, bearing and carrying away the sin of Israel ...

It just means "completed" or accomplished is all... Lived up to, or met the standard of, completed or accomplished or fulfilled... And the gospel and law are (the truth) and are God, so he lived up to being like God... By obedience, love and faith... He completed God, he was the first and some say the only person to do that...

God Bless!

Jesus fulfilled the law by never breaking it, being holy as God is holy. we are made holy by being in Christ and He in us, 2Cor5:21 and He who knew no sin became sin that we might be made righteous of God in Him. Therefore the law was our schoolmaster to lead us to Christ that we be justified by faith. Now under the new covenant we are to follow the leadership of the Holy Spirit, Gal 5:16 live in the Spirit and you shall not fulfill the desires of the flesh. Gal 5:26 if we live in the Spirit let us walk in the Spirit. That is under the leadership of the Holy Spirit.

Good day,

Yes
God gave a law (meditated by angels) knowing full well it could not be kept by the nation of Israel (his very) own.

We have a new mediator based on a promise, and in him the law is for-filled on behave of those he meditates for.

In Him,

Bill

From notes on Leviticus 16:
Verse 8

for the scapegoat. Hebrew for "Azazel. This "for" looks like a personality answering to "for Jehovah". If it be the Evil one who is meant, then it is for his defiance. For in Leviticus 16:10 atonement is made for this goat, and he is to go free. Where there is atonement there must be forgiveness. See note on Leviticus 16:22 below.
------------------
Verse 10

to be the scapegoat. Hebrew "to be for "Azazel" (see Leviticus 16:8 and Leviticus 16:22).

presented = made to stand.

with him. Hebrew "for him". See verses: Leviticus 16:16, Leviticus 16:18. The scapegoat was not used to make atonement, but atonement was made for it. Hence he was to be "let go" free. See Leviticus 16:22.

wilderness: or desert, symbol of abode of all evil things (Isaiah 13:21; Isaiah 34:14. Matthew 12:43. Luke 8:27; Luke 11:24. Revelation 18:2). "Azazel probably the personification of all that is "great and terrible" there (Deuteronomy 1:19; Deuteronomy 8:15. Jeremiah 2:6).
----------------------
Verse 22

shall bear = shall bear away, as Isaiah 53:4.

land not inhabited. Hebrew "a land cut off".

let go. This is the point of the type. The live goat was sent away, not in judgment or atonement, but in peace and at liberty. "All" had already been atoned for in the death of the other goat (Leviticus 16:10). Now he was free to go into the land of forgetfulness, where their "sins and iniquities are remembered no more" (Isaiah 43:25. Jeremiah 31:34). The scapegoat goes forth to "Azazel, all enemies thus personified (Hebrews 2:14), proclaiming, "Who is he that condemneth? "(Romans 8:33, Romans 8:34). Not in fear of death, but saying, "Who dares to kill me? "It is the lesson, over again, of the "two birds" in Ch. Leviticus 14:51-53, applied to the whole nation. It is a type of those who are "risen with Christ" (Colossians 3:1), i.e. made alive again in His resurrection life. Tradition treats this second goat as loaded with sin and sent out to destruction; whereas "all" is "atoned" for and is therefore "forgiven" and liberty enjoyed before it was sent away.

Good day,

You have created a distinction with no difference at all.

Modify or update is a change coveants allow no discretion... God does not change.

Actually, it could be kept, just like the 'do not run red lights' laws can be kept, (remember Jesus said the commandments are NOT burdensome)
but it cannot FREE anyone from sin or the power of sin - rather it reveals sin and YHWH'S PURPOSE is TORAH leads TO CHRIST.

YHWH and YESHUA perfectly gave TORAH, permanently.
They did not change "IOTA", not one tiny part of TORAH.

And as for "his/her" in this context , that is a corruption that goes along with an abominable society and with cults opposed to YHWH.

You can modify or update something without changing it, you know...? I didn't say "change" it BTW, I actually said "not change it" but, whatever...
