You seriously don’t see Bishops as being a catholic thing?

Forgive me...
No. Bishop just means overseer. Its not the same thing as catholic priests however because a lot of catholic tradition isnt found in the bible but was invented after the bible was written..

My God take those blinders off dad!

There was nothing else for the first 1000 years of The Church. To be Christian you were catholic.

Forgive me...

You guys might think that crusades and heretic burning is funny but i dont. Thats your tradition, not mine.

The Eastern Orthodox were the victims of the crusades.
Point that finger at Rome. Not Antioch.

Forgive me...

You don't seem to appreciate that there are two sides to that story.
There's Rome and then there is the rest of the Churches. (Jerusalem, Antioch, Alexandria, Constantinope)
Rome taught that "they" were all apostate because they would not follow Rome.

That's why when you think "catholic" you automatically think Roman Catholic. Because you fail to recognize the rest who were the first to protest against Rome.

You see them all as apostate Churches (just the way Rome taught you to) thinking that catholic equals bad.

History.

Sts Peter and Paul established Antioch
Sts Peter and Paul established Rome

Both catholic, at least Rome used to be catholic. I don't know what to call it now... a mess?

Forgive me...

The tradition in which we all stand is faith and hope and love.
  • Faith in Jesus Christ, God's only Son our Lord
  • Hope in the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come
  • Love, for God and for one another in the one body into which we are called.
In the embrace of the human experience that one body finds institutional expression in the Church, and the love we have for one another is often stretched, ye even to breaking point, yet we are called to preserve the bonds of unity as best we can.

A chorus I learned as a child based on John 13:35 and they will know we are Christians by our love, by our love, they will know that we are christians by our love. Sadly in the world today, and yes sometimes even on CF that seems to come down to they will know we are christians by the way we rip each others arms off.

One of the reasons why I think the word catholic (kata holos - according to the whole) is important is that it is embracing and inclusive, for we are one and whatever our divisions we must never let our oneness be broken, holy for we are the Lord's people redeemed by his most saving passion and resurrection, catholic because we exclude no one and remain a body without boundary of space or time but for all people and for all time, apostolic because we have been sent into the world to proclaim the good news of this salvation one for us, and all to this makes us Church.

You cant have oneness when strife over doctrine hinders it. Thats why i rid myself of tradition, it only serves to divide.

Okay, so the Orthodox felt strife over the doctrine that Rome was the head of The Church.

Were they wrong to do so?

Forgive me...

You say shed... then you know it was there.

You'll have to accept that it began catholic because that is what we do with Truth once we have processed it.

I say you're throwing the baby out with the bathwater.

One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church - OrthodoxWiki

Catholicity
"The Church is the fullness of Christ's body on earth. As a term, catholicity means fullness or perfection, wholeness. Only God is perfect wholeness, the fullness of being. God makes the Church to be catholic by its participation in his full, divine life.

Fr. Thomas Hopko:
The term "catholic" as originally used to define the Church (as early as the first decades of the second century) was a definition of quality rather than quantity. Calling the Church catholic means to define how it is, namely, full and complete, all-embracing, and with nothing lacking.

Even before the Church was spread over the world, it was defined as catholic. The original Jerusalem Church of the apostles, or the early city-churches of Antioch, Ephesus, Corinth, or Rome, were catholic. These churches were catholic -- as is each and every Orthodox church today -- because nothing essential was lacking for them to be the genuine Church of Christ. [They did not have nor need a Papacy]

God Himself is fully revealed and present in each church through Christ and the Holy Spirit, acting in the local community of believers with its apostolic doctrine, ministry (hierarchy), and sacraments, thus requiring nothing to be added to it in order for it to participate fully in the Kingdom of God.

Catholicity is sometimes confused with universality — the idea that the Christian faith is for all men. However, the word was originally used to denote the true Church among a growing horde of heretics who had removed elements from the faith which they disliked, refashioning Christian belief to their pleasure.

Catholicity is a qualitative mark: the quality of the whole faith handed down from the apostles."

Forgive me...

The year was 1204... it was the fourth crusade, the sacking of Constantinople.

“Some memories are especially painful, and some events of the distant past have left deep wounds in the minds and hearts of people to this day. I am thinking of the disastrous sack of the imperial city of Constantinople, which was for so long the bastion of Christianity in the East. It is tragic that the assailants, who had set out to secure free access for Christians to the Holy Land, turned against their own brothers in the faith. The fact that they were Latin Christians fills Catholics with deep regret… To God alone belongs judgment, and therefore we entrust the heavy burden of the past to his endless mercy, imploring him to heal the wounds, which still cause suffering to the spirit of the Greek people.”
(Pope John Paul II)

I dont think EO or RC was ever head of the church. They both came after the true apostles died.
