Have you heard this phrase among people who follow Christ, but don't want to be known as a Christian?

What do you think of people who make statement like this? I have use this phrase myself, so there's no judgement. Although, I struggle following Christ, and I fail all the time gaining victory over my sin, so I can not even make a claim that I am a follower of Christ.

But the question is, does this phrase make sense?
It makes sense, I want to be known or what I believe (or rather how that manifests for real) not what other people believe or for preconceived notions of what I should be because I take the label christian. makes perfect sense. I'm still me afterall.

i believe theres already a word for that, and I've seen it under the avatar of several people, including yours " non-denomination" its the generic belief in the existence of God and the self acceptance of God in your life. however if you believe jesus is the son of god, and you follow the words and teachings of christ, you cannot also claim to be non-denomination as that is the basis for being a christian

It's just a way of trying to distinguish oneself from those "other Christians" who associate themselves with the name of Christ but are not following Him. I'm certain that uttering such a phrase doesn't grant a guaranteed immunity from also being one those who are not following Him.

Dear Introverted1293. To be a Christ follower is to be a Christian. In Matthew22: 35-40: Jesus tells us. The first Commandment is: Love God with all thy heart, with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. The second is like it: love thy neighbour as thyself. God is Love, and God wants loving sons and daughters. We have to give up all selfish wishes and wants, we have to start loving and caring, and be ALWAYS kind and helpful. Love is very catching, and when we start loving, we will notice how very catching and caring true love is. Let us follow Christ back to God, and be the men and women which God wants us to be: Loving and caring, always friendly and helpful.
The Bible tells us: Love God and love thy neighbour, (al we know and all we meet, friend and not friend) treat all as we would love to be treated, that is what God wants from us. In Matthew 7: 7-10: we are told ask and you shall receive, we ask God for Love and compassion, then thank God and share all love and compassion with all around us. That is what God wants from us, loving sons and daughters. Jesus will lead us back to God and we are the men and women which God wants. Why not try it, Introverted? Greetings from Emmy, your sister in Christ. God is LOVE, and God wants loving and caring sons and daughters.

I think the reason why some people use the phrase "FOLLOW CHRIST rather than CHRISTIAN" is because, the word CHRISTIAN is loosing its worth. What did I mean, you will hear a thief calling him/her self a christian. Even the so called men of God most especial in the part of the world that I came from, their life, action, words etc does not show Christ style of living.

Even myself, I will prefer to used the phrase FOLLOW CHRIST in other to separate myself from those that are CHRISTIAN by mouth. In Nigeria, once you tell someone you are a christian, they will not take you serious because of their past experience in the hands of christian that they have met before.

However, the question is who is a Christian?

Simple, Christian is someone that is following Christ. That is Christ's Like. Christ's like in words, conversations, actions, thoughs etc. No sin was find in Him (Jesus Christ).

As a Christian, our life is hide in Christ Jesus. That why the bible says, IS NOT BY POWER NON BY MIGHTY BUT BY MY SPIRIT SAYS THE LORD. If we want to work things out by yourself, we'll not go anywhere why? Because of our human nature. The sin is always their beside us.

But, once we allow the power of God to come into our life, its this power of God that can enable us to live a victorious life over sin.

To overcome sin, you must live a holy life asking God to help you out on a daily basis. Hebrew 12:1 says "Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so GREAT A CLOUD OF WITNESSES, LET US LAY ASIDE EVERY WEIGHT, AND SIN WHICH DOTH SO EASILY BESET US, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us."

Hebrew 12:2 says, "Looking unto Jesus the Author and the Finisher of our faith..." So He is the one that will help us to over come sin.

I would ask someone what they mean by that. If they mean that far too many people claim to be "Christians" but are displaying no godly fruit in their lives and living just like the world, yes, that is a problem. In the post-Christian age, the term "Christian" has little in common with its actually meaning of historic Christianity.

Very interesting line of reasoning, ConvictionofGod. That very line of reasoning led me out of and away from independent Bible churches, community Bible churches, through several denominations, and finally back to the one Church that Jesus instituted when He gathered and sent His Apostles: the one, holy, apostolic, universal (which became known as Universal or Catholic) Church. Our Lord prayed:
John 17:20 "I do not pray for these only, but also for those who believe in me through their word,
John 17:21 that they may all be one; even as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they also may be in us, so that the world may believe that you sent me.

That prayer convicted me with a true "conviction of God" that I, then in a separated-from-the-one Church, had become part of the problem and not part of the solution that He was praying for: unity in the one Faith, so that the world can be led to saving belief.

I think that is awesome fide, God bless you if they find truth !! I just feel they are totally lost ( the ones I've seen and some I know). I was like that once myself . So there but by the Grace of God walk I. Hmmm.

We had this little Jewish lady in church, such a sweetheart. She came to the Lord in a big way but spent half a service crying. Her family rejected her and her husband rejected her church, so she always came alone. But he was one of these non practicing Catholics himself. It was really sad. Her deepest desire was to lead them all to Jesus, the crying was she knew their destiny, and while the reality of scripture has so much promise, it also tells us what happens to the lost.. Amen ?

Scripture does tell us of the horrific consequence of final disbelief - a rejection of holy saving Truth, a rejection of God and His perfect love. Fortunately I cannot and ought not judge any soul here and now, when it is His Judgment that matters, and that is to be made clear on the Last Day.

Meanwhile, as we await and look forward to that Day, we can pray as Jesus did, on His Cross, "Father forgive them, for they know not what they do." Apart from Him, apart from the light of His grace, man can hardly see his nose in front of his face. So let us pray for the latter rains of grace to come, and fall upon this dark world stumbling in the shadow of death. Let us pray for holy witnesses to arise and testify to the light that can pierce any darkness and transform it into light - His light - the light of truth and of love.

I think some people like the principles that the Lord taught and live them out, without becoming His disciples or Christians. People of other faiths admire the Lord Jesus as a good teacher, not necessarily the only Teacher. That mindset may have something to do with that remark. But those of us sold out to the Lord Jesus are both His followers and Christians. We weren't even called Christians initially. We were known as the followers of the "Way" ((Acts 9:2, 19:9...). To the Jews and Romans, it was a cult. The disciples were called Christians for the first time at Antioch (Acts 11:26). Peace in Christ :).

We are Evangelical Christian- Non Denominational and largely missions based ( try and find that when you join up here in the drop down menu LOL). We also do work interdenominational with other churches, even having services in a Catholic church in one location of 650 world wide. We let denominations be their denomination, unless they are outside the trinity or preaching false Gospel, then we just don't go there.

Beyond that I believe that God is free to work with groups or individuals at a level that best reveals Himself to that group or individual as needed and not necessary for another group or individual to experience at that time.. So just because it didn't happen to me for instance, doesn't mean it didn't happen to you. But probably not with non believers unless He wants them for something and He of course is always present at salvation or a turn to Him.. For someone to point a finger at someone else and say that doesn't happen is dubious.. He is God, He is faithful and He will do what God does.

Our main mission is to spread the Gospel and that is that Jesus Christ, God in the second person, made manifest on earth, died for our sins and rose again on the third day and now sits at the right hand of the father. That fact and the acceptance of it is the key to salvation.

But the question is, does this phrase make sense?

Well what IS a Christian?

A Christian is a person who has received Christian baptism or is a believer in Jesus Christ and his teachings.

What IS a Christian Baptism?

A Christian Baptism - is a combination of a ritual of WATER submersion AND doing so in the NAME of the Father, and Son and Holy Spirit.

So, IS a Christian Baptism - NOT a Christian Baptism, IF a person is NOT submersed in WATER, but that ONLY accepts the Baptism of the Holy Spirit, in the NAME of the Father, and Son and Holy Spirit?

Appears so.

So would such a person, CALL THEMSELVES, a Christian? Maybe, maybe not.

OR

a Christian can be; a Believer in Jesus Christ AND His teachings.

So, IF a person IS a Believer in Jesus Christ AND His teachings; and HAS accepted the HOLY SPIRIT, in the name of The Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit......but NOT been water immersed....
IS HE a Christian?

Appears so.

How about a person WHO, is following Jesus Christ's teachings, BUT has NOT YET committed to being Baptized in the Spirit?

IS that person a Christian?

Others may call him a Christian - others may SEE him attending a Christian church - other may BE present on the DAY he confesses before the congregation to accept the Holy Spirit.

So what was this person, all the days he was sitting in that Church learning ABOUT God, BEFORE his confession of belief, and acceptance of the Holy Spirit?

IS there a TERM for him? Yes. It is called an unrepentant sinner.

Churches are where SINNERS congregate. They will be all called Christians, because they are ALL being enlightened, by the Word of God, who is LIGHT.

There are SINNERS, who are repentant, and forgiven, and sin no more.
There are SINNERS, who are not repentant, nor forgiven, and continue to sin.

THUS:
A Christian IS a person in the process of FOLLOWING, LEARNING, BEING ENLIGHTENED.
and
A Christian IS a person who HAS, submitted to Gods Saving Grace, and received His indwelling Spirit.

WHY a person who is not YET committed chooses to not claim being a Christian, is of his own, choosing, own reasoning, of what he personally believes, is required of a Christian, but that which he has not yet obtained.

Or perhaps such a person, does not want to be associated with other people who call themselves Christians, of whom the person does not believe, the other person, is worthy to be called by that title.

To me it is simple -
I am a born again Christian, which makes my claim clear.
many others are on the path to becoming a Christian, who is born again, which makes their intent clear.

Each, IMO, are worthy, and doing the WILL of God.
IMO, DOING Gods WILL, trumps, what title, one is called.

God Bless,
SBC

I do fear. I fear God's wrath.
Then find the Fathers love and grace. And you'll have a reason to fear anything.

1 John:
18 There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.
19 We love him, because he first loved us.

Hi SBC ! What do you call that person who has not accepted the Holy Spirit ? Unsaved.

Correct.

However, we, of the earth, ie humans - go through "stages".

Born in sin - thus born in standing against God.
...Against Who? Against What?
...Sounds funny, a baby is AGAINST God, yet he knows not even what a god is....but yet true;
...Because if one is NOT in standing WITH God, he is AGAINST God.

Well, so the babe, begins learning ABOUT God. Now what is the babe? Standing WITH or WITHOUT God?
...Clearly he is without God's Spirit WITHIN him.

However, every babe, regardless of age, man, woman, child, WHO is hearing Gods WORD....and here's the KEY.....BELIEVING, Gods Word...

THEY ARE, called BEGINNING, in FAITH -
which is to say - because they are hearing, because they are believing what they hear - Gods LIGHT, God POWER (ie light, Spirit) IS reflecting upon them (which results in them receiving from God, FAITH).

But what IF, they STOP, following, hearing, believing what they have heard?
Well, they then STOP receiving Gods light, power, faith in God.

And they then are called FALLEN FROM FAITH -

What if they GO BACK and again do the SAME ?

Then again they are called BEGINNING IN FAITH -

And what if they AGAIN stop?

Then again they are called FALLEN FROM FAITH -

How many times can a man believe then fall from faith?

As many times as:
1) he does so, during his physical life

It is to his own detriment, to physically die, during a time he has fallen from faith.

So what about a FORGIVEN, SAVED and BORN AGAIN MAN?

This is greater than FAITH. This is a commitment, to be ONLY Faithful to God, forever and always.

It is greater; Because as the term implies.... it is not only a Beginning Faith, it is FAITH-FULL.

Faith- FULLNESS, comes after a mans commitment to give his life to God.

It is God WHO, gives the man the FULLNESS of FAITH, that shall NEVER depart from the man.

Thus a man can NOT thereafter, FALL FROM FAITH.

The mans FULL, body, soul, and spirit, is FOREVER in FULL FAITH in God.

And THAT IS KEPT in it's FULLNESS, BY the POWER of God, that dwells WITHIN THE MAN.

A man claiming to be; saved, born again, faithful to God, son of God....are all words reflective of a man having the Spirit of God, within him, forever.

A man saying he is a Christian, can imply, following in beginning faith, or in full faithfulness to God.

The fact is; God is not making us Christians.
The fact is; God is making us "sons of God".

God Bless,
SBC

[for me anyway] it may be because of the multitudes which say they are "Christians" yet are not, but do superficially say so, because they follow another Jesus of a cheap no cost faith in which nothing is required of them: just to have so many using the title "Christian" yet are not can be a cause for true Christians to answer when asked that they are a follower of Christ, which is also a correct way to identify without the hearer hearing the same title which they have heard from others which do not bring forth good fruit, and yet act as though they are a good tree.

He wasn't just a leader and teacher, he was an example. We seek to be the example through his teachings. The same Holy Spirit that made him Christ is now given to us as well. The Hebrews never had it (OT). No one could be sons (and daughters) of God until Christ taught us who God was (glorify), and how to be a son. That is following Jesus the Christ.

The Hebrews never had it (OT).

Sure they did. What they didn't have was the terminology, to call things, as we have been given.

Do you think OT men were not SAVED and BORN AGAIN, because they did not know that is what it is called?

Do you think OT men were not SAVED and BORN AGAIN, but yet called "saints"?

Do you think OT men were not SAVED and BORN AGAIN, and will be DENIED entry into Gods Kingdom?

Nah!

John 3
[3] Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.

They were never born again until Jesus went to Hades where they slept. They died and were dead. Just as Jesus said they did. He went to Hades when he gave up his spirit, then they were saved, and arose from the graves and appeared in the Holy City. (Matthew).

(the resurrection of the dead)

No one comes to the Father but by the Son. Jesus became the Son at the Chrism.

See it as you wish. Mark 9:2-8 tells us who to listen to. And it's not Moses nor Isaiah, but the Son.

Do you not think their destiny was known though ? I would submit to you that they were saved, just as Abraham believed and it was counted to him as righteousness.

Ok. thanks. ;)

Because How I see it, is Jesus IS the WORD of God, and nothing was made or created without the WORD coming forth out from Gods mouth, to speak the thing into existence.
And nothing was made or created without the POWER of God, who IS Christ, causing the Word to be effected.

I have already learned, and believe, NOTHING created or made was BEFORE the Word of God.

The heavens, the angels, the holy host, the earth, mankind, plants, trees, water, animals.....ALL made and created by the WORD of God, with the POWER of God, speaking, molding, making, creating, ALL THINGS.

Insomuch as the Word of God was manifested in the flesh likeness as a man, and walked among men, called the Son of God, God with us, in the LAST DAYS....

there were plenty of earlier days, that men believed, men were faithful to God, and God was with them, just as God is with men today, who believe, who are faithful to God, and whom God is with.

Heb 1
[2] Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds;

Whom do you think SPOKE to men BEFORE the last days, but did not save and quicken for 4,000 years, before the last days? Yet called them, favored, beloved, saints?

There were saved and unsaved souls in Hell, when Jesus' soul went to Hell.

The waiting of the saved souls, was them waiting for Jesus to arrive and leave, so they could ALSO leave. They are witnesses to Jesus having left BEFORE THEM. Jesus is FIRST before all things.

God, Father, Son & Holy spirit are His own witnesses of His creation of heaven and it's angels and host.

The angels are His witnesses of creating the earth, the animals, plants, mankind.
There were witness of Jesus' arrival on earth, of Jesus' death on earth, of Jesus' body being buried, of Jesus' soul in hell, of Jesus risen body from the dead, of Jesus walking with saints who had been dead and buried, of Jesus' body having risen to the clouds.

Jesus has no shortage of witnesses. And when and how and where and His witnesses are, or wait for Him, is all part of Gods Way, design, order, but does not change the fact, who the Word of God is, and that He is before all things.

Col 1
[17] And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.

1 Cor 1
[24] But unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God.

God Bless,
SBC

Then find the Fathers love and grace. And you'll have a reason to fear anything.

1 John:
18 There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.
19 We love him, because he first loved us.

That's true.

But the question is, does this phrase make sense?

maybe since some people realized that the majority of so-called modern christianity don't do the works of Jesus and His true disciples presented in the Bible they have been afraid to be part of it lest God consider them unfaithful and they be emptied of true faith and grace, and therefore they have been afraid to call themselves christinans (i.e. lest they turned out to be involved in heresy)

Blessings

'I am a Christ follower but not a Christian'
The only thing more pretentious than this is referring to Him as "Yeshua" (or some variation). I typically associate this insipid "Christ-follower" thing with Christianity For Hipsters like Rachel Held Evans and her ilk.

Just... no.

What do you think of people who make statement like this?
Answering that beyond the above could get me banned. Suffice it to say, it's nothing polite.

Edit

This thread had a clean up and is being reopened. While Controversial Christian Theology can have some debates about gnosticism, some gnosticism is in too much conflict with the site Statement of Faith.
