Jesus followers were NEVER meant to be "armchair Christians" - bashing fellow Christians and fighting over insignificant doctrinal issues.....In essentials unity, in non-essentials liberty!!!

In everything, then, do to others as you would have them do to you. For this is the essence of the Law and the prophets

Who ever said church attendance would save you? Why do people seem to think that? Or think that other people think that?

in the spiritof hair splitting and squabling over endless wrangling.

Do you mean those who just follow Jesus or those who seek to be his disciples.

When the requirement is to take up ones Cross daily, who of the above will do that.

In fairness to the OP, I was raised in the Churches of Christ and several of them will flat out tell you that attending service is the path to salvation.

But the other 99.5% of Christianity probably doesn't believe something that silly.

Love is essential and it abides forever. The rest, liberty
What about water baptism? Several parts of sacred scripture speak to the efficacy of water baptism while other parts address the necessity of it. And yet there are still those out there who view it as an optional "symbol" or something.

In fact, looking at the entire Christian world, one is hard-pressed to find any single doctrinal idea that everybody agrees upon. There is no visible, corporate or doctrinal unity to be found in Christianity today. Sad, really.

I've yet to have encountered anyone who thinks church attendance saves people, or that simply going to church makes one a Christian. That certainly isn't the teaching of your church, my church, or any of the historic and traditional churches.

And yet it seems some people seem to think this is taught somewhere--but by whom? Who teaches this?

Nobody seems too sure about what the non-essentials are. That's where most of the disagreement comes from.

The very fact that we disagree on what is essential and non-essential is precisely why there's disagreement at all.

If there were no disagreement on this, there'd be no debate.

And this is where, usually, someone argues what is essential and what isn't essential basing this on what they and their particular church tradition says is or isn't essential. Thus making themselves the final arbiter of what matters and doesn't matter in Christianity. Then failing to realize that they have thus entered into the debate itself in so doing.

Get rid of the tradition.
The tradition that church attendance saves you would be a good one to get rid of. But who even has it aside from some small groups?

Get rid of the tradition.

What about the tradition that there are certain writings which are divinely inspired and holy Scripture? Should we get rid of this tradition as well? What about the tradition that Jesus Christ is Lord, and that we should follow and worship Him? Certainly we shouldn't get rid of this tradition.

Im referring to tradition that divides.

So everything then?

Because one church says there are 39 books in the Old Testament, and other says there are 46 books in the Old Testament.

So the solution is to get rid of the Old Testament?
To get rid of the tradition that says there's 39 books?
To get rid of the tradition that says there's 46 books?

What is it that we need to get rid of?
