N.F.L. players across the country demonstrated during the national anthem on Sunday in a show of solidarity against President Trump, who scolded the league and players on Twitter this weekend.

■ With the support of owners, some of whom joined their teams on the field, dozens of players knelt in silent protests, while Tom Brady and others opted to stand and lock arms.

■ The Seattle Seahawks and the Tennessee Titans stayed in their locker rooms during the anthem in Nashville. The Pittsburgh Steelers also skipped the anthem in Chicago.

■ After the demonstrations began, Mr. Trump weighed in on Twitter, saying he approved of players locking arms, but declaring that kneeling during the anthem was “not acceptable.”

The entire offensive line of the Oakland Raiders, the only line in the N.F.L. made up entirely of African-American players, was joined by virtually the entire team in kneeling or sitting during the national anthem before their game against the host Washington Redskins. It was one of the strongest visual displays of the many protests today, and across the field, the Redskins stood with linked arms as some players chose to kneel.

My thoughts on this is fighting for civil rights have been going on in sports for a very long time. Baseball Hall-of-Famer Jackie Robinson said that he would not stand for the pledge for the same reasons players in the NFL are not standing today. As this is the land of the free we do not live in North Korea where they have to stand. Members of the NFL, NBA and the MLB are doing something that has been apart of sports since the 70s and we are acting like this is a new thing.

I think Trump shouldn't have opened his mouth, but how is this about civil rights? It's a BLM anti-cop thing from what I've seen.

Jesus says to bless those who curse us. So, when I saw the introductory part of this thread's title, saying ones were kneeling, I thought maybe Christian players were kneeling to pray for Donald Trump.

1 Timothy 2:1-4 < this is what God wants, "first of all", our Apostle Paul says.

So, seeing that this title appears in a Christian forum place, this is what I thought of, first :)

Estimates are 250 out of 1700 players knelt during the Anthem. So it's hardly the whole NFL.
Also, the Dallas Cowboys took a knee prior to the Anthem, then stood during. Very few news sources report the whole story, but media inaccuracy is normal.

I would say that there are anti-officer people but also others. Hopefully, ones can appreciate that most officers would risk their lives to protect your mother or father or brother or sister or daughter or son or grandparents or grandchildren.

So, in case anyone is anti- all officers, this could be like how racist people can be against any and all members of certain groups.

And, by the way, there are about a million police officers serving in the United States. We have not had a million unjustified killings, this year, by officers. Yes, there are rogue officers and ones not emotionally suited, but not a million first-degree murderers.

And so it would be interesting to get the stats about how many officers risked their lives . . . today. Often, even a routine traffic stop catches very dangerous people, and officers risked their lives to protect us from those people.

Also, we even have that video of how white officers did not shoot the black guy who tried to run them over with a car. And shooting him, I would say, would have been uncontested, considering it was on camera. Yet, in showing that footage on TV, the news people did not point that out.

This movement is about blacks being gunned down and unfairly being targeted by police because of their color which falls under civil rights as shown below.

From site:

"Civil rights are an expansive and significant set of rights that are designed to protect individuals from unfair treatment; they are the rights of individuals to receive equal treatment (and to be free from unfair treatment or discrimination) in a number of settings -- including education, employment, housing, public accommodations, and more -- and based on certain legally-protected characteristics."

What Are Civil Rights? - FindLaw

The vast majority of interactions between police officers and civilians end routinely, with no one injured, no one aggrieved and no one making the headlines. But when force is used, a new study has found, the race of the person being stopped by officers is significant.

The study of thousands of use-of-force episodes from police departments across the nation has concluded what many people have long thought, but which could not be proved because of a lack of data: African-Americans are far more likely than whites and other groups to be the victims of use of force by the police, even when racial disparities in crime are taken into account.

Not a chance. They were kneeling out of hate, not love.

I would question this, because there is an established ministry to professional football players and a number of pros openly confess Jesus. So, if they joined in the protest, I would say it was not out of hate. Their meaning would be to support our black brothers and sisters, plus we love any and all others of American minority groups.

So, yes there could be ones hating, but each person can speak for oneself about what he or she means.

I don't understand the point of the locking arms or the momentary taking of a knee, which occurred during last night's game. The players show solidarity as a team? But they are a team. The NFL is embarrassing itself with these pointless charades.

Thank you, NFL, for returning the Lords day to the Lord. My family will not be watching your overpaid athletes this season.
Why did the NFL in your opinion did something wrong? I have always believed that Saturday and Sunday were the Lords days as Saturday is the Sabbath and Sunday was fellowship day.

They are making a statement to this country about what's been going on in a peaceful manner. Players used to stay in the locker rooms during the national anthem prior to 2009 but because of paid patriotism players are now on the field to show how patriotic they are. They are not required to take part of this paid patriotism if they do not choose to. For black Americans who feel the injustice that has been going on from slavery in the 1800s to racial segregation of the 1950s to police brutality of today they feel they do not have much to stand for when it comes to the anthem. They are not required to stand and if they choose not to that is their freedom to quietly sit or kneel. As this is not North Korea where they have to stand.

Thank you so much for your post. I was starting to think there was no ability to understand that other people have different lives than those of us who are white here. Is there a place where you and others post who are not apologists for Mr. Trump?

Well, when I see your terminology, here, I think of how a quarterback can take a knee during a game, maybe because they know there is no point of risking injury by doing a hard-hitting play when the game is essentially over or they have no need or chance of scoring.

Each player could have a different understanding. Even if the instigators are more worldly, the other players can know how they feel, and sympathize with them and join them . . . though their ways and attitudes might not be perfect. So, like I offer, each one can speak for oneself :) But there are people who just want certain things to mean what they dictate.

Also, a number of players do not know God, they are in Satan's kingdom; and ones do not even know how to love in their own families. So, it is silly to expect such worldly people to act in God's way. Ones of the players are "type A" off-the-scale aggressive people; they are hired and praised because of what they can do . . . though it is coming out of a very into-oneself and aggressive personality > they get millions of dollars and praising fans, though they might not be able to be tenderly affectionate with their own wives. But, of course, ones expect these performers to be such good role models! :sigh:

A number are not in any way really about being team, but they are only about getting money and glory for their own selves . . . but while play-acting that they are about team, since this helps them to get what is only or mainly about their own selves.

May be we can see this, by how star players do not run to hug the guys who did the dirty work of opening up a hole for their run, or the guys who ran decoy so the star could be uncovered to catch a pass. Instead, I consider we could say, it's the guy who scores and the passer who get most of the glory and credit. So, no one, really, may be so about team; but it sounds good to say they are lo-olololololol

It's hard to see these players as victims. The make far more than most Americans ever will. Added to that, NFL stadiums are hugely subsidized in urban areas where crime and unemployment are rife. Where's the justice in that?

The players come from backgrounds and continue to experience life as someone who wakes up every day to people who make assumptions about them based on the color of their skin. I find it commendable that they want to give back to those who face the same disadvantages they did as kids. They risk a lot to do this, or did before Trump got into it.

I think you miss the point as they never claimed to be the victims. They are making a statement for those who have suffered the injustice cause of the color of someone's skin. Also let's remember they were not always rich and they have lived on the other side of the street. Some of them probably have been victims before you or I don't know.

No doubt racism and racists assumptions continue to exists. I'm not sure to what extent the NFL and its players do give back or what risk they take in being generous. The NFL serves as entertainment, but not much more.
