[12] Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling;
[13] for God is at work in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure. Phil 2:12-13 RSV

So how does one work out their own salvation?

1 Peter 4: 1 So then, since Christ suffered physical pain, you must arm yourselves with the same attitude he had, and be ready to suffer, too. For if you have suffered physically for Christ, you have finished with sin.
Perhaps there is a better way.

By cooperating with the Holy Spirit as He directs you toward being fully sanctified.

Study your Bible.
Pray often.
Attend worship services.
Love your neighbor.
Etc.

Take Up your Cross and Follow Him:
24 Then Jesus said to His disciples, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me. 25 For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it. 26 For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul? Mathew 16:24-26 NKJV

Is it possible that after we've followed the Lord for a period of time, he will show us a way to work out our own salvation? Does Jeremiah 31:33 give us a clue?

That sentence starts with the word "Therefore." It is the conclusion of the proposition stated before it.

Any explanation of a conclusion that does not take into considerate the proposition prior to "therefore" must inevitably miss the writer's point.

He left us a narrow path, but he scatters breadcrumbs far and wide.

I didn't think it was necessary to require everybody to read the first eleven verses. I think the question I posed in the original post was valid and worth discussing.

And I disagree. Commenting on a verse out of context that is explicitly linked to the preceding verses is exceedingly poor hermeneutics.

Interesting analogy. It might describe the path I've been following.

Everything in the book of Philippians is linked to everything else in the book of Philippians.

Any explanation of a conclusion that does not take into considerate the proposition prior to "therefore" must inevitably miss the writer's point.

An old preacher I used to know said: "When you see "Therefore" in a scripture; see what it's there for--look back at the previous passages."

So there must be something in these passages we are to look at; for the beginning of the answer:

"So if there is any encouragement in Christ, any incentive of love, any participation in the Spirit, any affection and sympathy, 2 complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind. 3 Do nothing from selfishness or conceit, but in humility count others better than yourselves. 4 Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. 5 Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, 6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself, taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in human form he humbled himself and became obedient unto death, even death on a cross. 9 Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name which is above every name, 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father." Philippians 2:1-11 nkjv

[12] Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling;
[13] for God is at work in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure. Phil 2:12-13 RSV

(1)
Philippians 1:4 "For your fellowship in the gospel from the first day until now;"
Philippians 2:12 "Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed,..."

From the time Paul first took the gospel to Philippi and made the first Christians there until some years later when Paul wrote the Philippian epistle, they had faithfully remained in the gospel, had continued to obey.

They would work out their salvation by their continued faithfulness in remaining in the gospel, by their continued obedience to the gospel, obey the commands of Christ as found in the NT letters... "And if any man obeyeth not our word by this epistle, note that man, that ye have no company with him, to the end that he may be ashamed." 2 Thess 3:14. They would be doctrinally sound by doing so, Philippians 1:27.

(2)
The phrase "work out" means to complete, to continue until finished. They were not to stop this work until completion, until the goal was reached. It is a life long work until death, be thou faithful unto death, Revelation 2:10. Therefore a man has a role in his own salvation and not 100% passive.

An analogy:
"(ii) There is another side to this. Salvation is of man. "Work out your own salvation," Paul demands. Without man's co-operation, even God is helpless. The fact is that any gift or any benefit has to be received. A man may be ill and the doctor able to prescribe the drugs that will cure him; but the man will not be cured until he takes them and he may stubbornly refuse all persuasion to take them. It is so with salvation. The offer of God is there; without it there can be no such thing as salvation. But no man can ever receive salvation unless he answers God's appeal and takes what he offers....It is never God who withholds salvation (2 Pet 3:9); it is always man who deprives himself of it (Acts 13:46)” ”
William Barclay's Daily Bible Study

(3)
Paul said to "work out" not "work for" for salvation cannot be earned or merited. Working out one's salvation in obeying Christ's NT until death is a necessary condition God has placed upon His free gift of salvation. Noah's work in building the ark was a necessary, conditional work in the saving of his house and earned him nothing. "So likewise ye, when ye shall have done all those things which are commanded you, say, We are unprofitable servants: we have done that which was our duty to do.: Luke 17:10

So how does one work out their own salvation?

With fear and trembling.

The Christian is called to live out their faith in the real world.

Which can be tricky. Sometimes even our churches lead us down the wrong path.

If your church is leading you down the wrong path then find a different church.

The very reason every good Protestant takes his bible with him.
