Christ taught more than just the 10 commandments Deuteronomy 6:4-5 and Leviticus 19:18 are the 2 greatest commandments, and they're not from the 10 When the devil was tempting him, he quoted the Deuteronomy, not Exodus Matthew 5:17 shows that the Messiah taught the full and correct meaning of the law and the prophets He didn't just stop at 10 Even Peter taught from the law 1 Peter 1:15-16 But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation; Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy. "Be ye Holy, for I am Holy" is not in the 10 commandments. It's actually from the book of Leviticus
Everything from the new testament scriptures come from the Old Testament. The two great commandments do indeed come from the Old Testament writings. However these two great commandments were only summing up the 10 commandments. The diagram provided above shows a good illustration what the two great commandments were referring to. The first is your duty towards God (the first table Exodus 20:1-11) and the second is your duty towards your neighbor (2nd table Exodus 20:12-17) and is why Jesus says
on these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets (Matthew 22:36-40).
The Jews (Pharisees/Lawyers) knew this however as is referenced in Luke 10:25-28
Luke 10:25-28
25, And, behold, a certain
lawyer stood up, and tempted him, saying,
Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life? 26, He said unto him, What is written in the law? how readest thou? 27, And he answering said
<the Lawyer/Pharisee>,
Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbor as thyself. 28, And he said unto him, Thou hast answered right: this do, and thou shalt live.
Because this was indeed referring to the Old testament scriptures (Deut 6:5; Lev 19:18)
Notice again the same question asked by the rich young ruler in
what shall I do to inherit eternal life?
Matthew 19:16-19
16, And, behold, one came and said unto him, Good Master,
what good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life? 17, And he said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God: but if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments. 18, He saith unto him, Which? Jesus said, Thou shalt do no murder, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, 19, Honour thy father and thy mother: and, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
This is the reason Jesus says that the two great commandments (love to God and Love to man)
hang all the law and the prophets (Matthew 22:36-40) because you cannot separate Love from action. Love produced the fruit of obedience and is demonstrated by action.
