I was watching two speakers on Ted Talks, and both were focusing on the internet and social media, etc. One of them brought up boredom. He said that, for him, boredom is/was terrifying.

It got me to thinking....

does boredom terrify you?

I think idleness terrifies me more. It's one thing to feel bored, but what I do with that either turns into productivity or procrastination.

Good point.

Hmmmmm...you may have a point there....idleness makes me fidgety. There must be a reason for that fidgety-ness.

Boredom is finding lack of interest. The next question is, what interests don't interest you. Why, because it is these that we find threatening. For most, it is about who our truth we don't want to even contemplate on, so we seek interests to distract us from what we don't want to see.

If a person knows and accepts their truth, then there is no reason to seek distraction. In that serenity, there is nothing to be terrified about. Even isolation from everything is not boring. Isolation turns to solitude.

I don't often experience boredom, in large part because of the opportunities that the Internet provides.

But no, it doesn't terrify me. I enjoy having time for self-reflection and meditation.

Now that is kinda' like a gift, to be able to be calm enough for self-reflection and meditation.

Once upon a time in my job we were expected to cultivate an attitude of alertness and constant enquiry in circumstances of extreme boredom. Such was the job of a navigational watch keeper. Now (because our bosses thought that this was a terribly unproductive occupation) we are inundated with everything to do other than the job that we were professionally trained to do. So it seems that the fear of boredom may well be strongly connected to the fear of not being productive enough. Perhaps our culture in its haste to be ever productive no longer knows and now longer values the practice of simply being still and embracing the boredom.

hahaaaa i wonder how many people would "embrace the boredom"? i think there must be a bit of terror for me when i think of it because i have had a tendency to runnnnnnn from it.

LOL. Perhaps it isn't such a good thing in the long run either. I am sure that the number of neurotic narcissistic loonies that I have sailed with over the years way over represents the same traits observed in the general population.

For unbelievers, it's the void at the heart of boredom that is the deeper issue, I think.
