Again, I'm seeing a willingness to turn a blind eye to suffering and choosing the law over mercy. I'm at a loss at how any Christian let alone any Catholic can't see the injustice in this administration's and the last administration's immigration policy. I'm sticking with the bishops and the Holy Father on this one. The repeal of DACA is not pro-family or pro-life.
The Catholic Catechism (N. 2241.2) says that immigration policy belongs with ‘political authorities’, not bishops.

So you are pro-choice. Good.
If you don't like our immigration policy, petition your legislators to change it.
Ultimately, government serves the voters; though it might take a few good electoral thumpings to get them to realize that.
In the meantime , as St Peter and the other apostles said , "We must obey God rather than human beings! " (Acts 5:29)

You don't believe your habits contribute to climate change. I get it. But an investment in solar panels would pay for itself in 8 years--and the panels would last 20.

It's a win-win situation. Take a chance that the enormous preponderance of evidence on climate change is true--and save money.

If you don't do it for the human family, do it for yourself.

And no one who agrees with Trump's decision to rescind DACA supports the "separation of families", so the argument is invalid immediately.

How would families not be separated by rescinding DACA? There's 'Dreamers' who are the oldest in the family, brought to the USA when they were young but have younger sibs who were born here & get to stay put. Since these folks are young adults, a sib a year or two younger born in the US could have already married, had kids. So the Dreamers would be separated from their families who can legally stay, & the life they built for themselves.

The USCCB was founded to support Catholic immigrants.

If US immigration policies are immoral, then it's up to the bishops to speak out against them.

What laws would that be?

Legalized abortion comes immediately to mind.

The OP is about an executive order (not a law) being rescinded. I'm not aware of any proposed new legislation that would result in increased deportations. If you want existing immigration laws laxed, then you need to take it up with your congressman or senator, not the President.

Like the Holy Father, I'm fuzzy on the legal details. What I do know is that when it comes to immigration we need to do the right thing. The repeal of DACA is causing a lot of anxiety and suffering. This why I stand with Pope Francis in believing that Trump's action is not pro-life.

No, the USCCB was not founded for the primary purpose of 'supporting Catholic immigrants'. It so happens that every country has a Conference of Catholic Bishops, in fact, most states in the US have a Catholic Bishop's Conference.
Here's the thing: You need to describe in what way US Immigration policies are immoral before declaring them to be so. US Immigration policies are the most lenient in the world, although they are, in fact, broken and out dated. No country on the face of the earth allows more immigration than the US.

US immigration policy has always been skewed against Catholics. This why the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops was formed in the first place, to stop the exploitation of Catholic immigrants. I will continue to stand with the bishops in continuing to build a society that is truly pro-life.

Hillary Clinton was opposed to DACA too...just FYI.

Well that's not all that relevant to this discussion, but I am wanting to know if you're sure about that. I thought she was for DACA. That her comments about kids being sent back home was made a few years back when there was this huge number of them coming in from Central America all on their own. Unaccompanied. It was about actual kids, not Dreamers who are young adults & can fend for themselves. Thought she said that if there were responsible adults back in their home country to care for the kids, they ought to be reunited with them. She was wanting folks in Central America to quit sending little kids on the long dangerous trek.

Maybe, Root of Jesse, it's not mentioned in the catechism because throwing young adults out of the only homeland they have ever known is part of that "natural law" we hear so often--that small still voice in our hearts that recoils in horror at the idea of doing something like that.

That small still voice that says we should love our neighbors as ourselves. That small still voice that says do unto others as you would have them do unto you.

There are lots of negative influences trying to silence that small still voice, but you have a choice not to listen to them.

It's not in the catechism because the rightness of protecting DACA youth is as obvious as the noses on our faces.

Yeah it was. The history of the Catholic Church in America is the story of Catholic immigration to America.

Arkansas Senator Tom Cotton has introduced the RAISE Act to cut immigration in half and favor the well-educated and affluent.

I know a number of "dreamers" who have been here since they were children, and they HAVE become well-educated and have good jobs and speak good English (they ALL speak good English). And so the RAISE Act wants to throw out the well-educated people who already live here to find some well-educated English-speaking immigrants (to the chagrin of some, they are most likely to come from India, Nigeria, Uganda...former English colonies whose principal language is English. The Swiss and Norwegians are perfectly happy in their own countries.)

Root of Jesse, people of faith have often opposed unjust laws. Slavery. Abortion. So what's so different about DACA? Why can't you accept that as an unjust law that should be opposed? As Pope Francis says, opposing immigration, and most especially, refugees, is anti-life.

I have said many times here that while religious conservatives are criticizing Pope Francis' laxity, they don't understand that his real message is SO challenging, SO demanding, that most of us could never come near to meeting his standard. We in the U.S. are the "rich young man," saying, "We obey the commandments--as a matter of fact one of our favorites is 'admonishing the sinner...'" And then Pope Francis lays the truth on us, and the easiest thing to do is to shut our ears.

Root of Jesse, I read you loud and clear. 97% of climate scientists believe that mankind is responsible for the dangerous climate change we're experiencing. You choose to believe the 3%. I have found that most of the 3% work for energy producers and have an agenda to prove...but if you have found anything more compelling than what the 97% have said please share it with us so we can evaluate whether we think the 3% are right as well.

Epic post, Fantine. I wish I had written it.

Yeah, internet bibles say lots of things. Like I've said I have 4 Catholic study bibles, all with an imprimater and nihil obstat, and approved by USCCB, and ZERO times do any of them use the word "stupid." But you stick with your internet links.
Half of my original comment referenced the pope's alleged use of the word - which he didn't. So there's that.

Speaking of a Catholic bible, Tad. I've been thinking about purchasing one for myself. I'm mostly curious about the books that were left out of the Protestant bible. I would like to read them and I would like to read the rest of the Catholic bible too. Do you have any recommendations for me?

Maybe a study bible? I'm sure I could find the Catholic bible available online somewhere, but I'm old fashioned when it comes to the bible and to books in general. I actually like to have a book in hand to read rather than read books on Kindle or read the bible on an iPhone bible app. Thanks.

Emerald Flame , I highly recommend the 1966 Standard edition of the Jerusalem Bible .

If you can't get that there is a new translation of the Jerusalem Bible .

Quoting Amazon , "The New Jerusalem Bible is recognised as one of today's most accurate, clear and modern translations, the fruit of long collaboration between leading biblical scholars. This Standard Edition presents the New Jerusalem Bible with comprehensive material designed for serious study of the scriptures. It contains the full Bible, with special features for in-depth study: * Extensive Footnotes to the text, plus a table of major footnotes * Side-margin Cross-reference system * Full-colour Maps and Diagrams, with index * 20-page Chronological Table, detailing the historical context of biblical events * An Index of Persons, with verse references * Major scholarly Introductions to all the main groupings of books ."
