I heard somewhere, that the Holy Spirit only convicts the world of sin and that once you are saved the Holy Spirit does not convict sin anymore... Where does this come from?

I am confused on this as I feel convicted of my sins more now that I am saved and I don't think or believe my sinful flesh would ever tell me to not sin or be more holy... Thoughts? (Please keep it nice no harsh debating)

Kind of. Your sins are forgiven, though they will continue given
the environment where God is not present.

Thank God the Holy Spirit DOES convict us of our sins after we are saved. We're not perfect, just saved. We are still in the flesh, which wars rather viciously and relentlessly against our spirit. This is part of our "walk with God", to be kept "in check" by the Holy Spirit. We NEED the Holy Spirit to do this. I know I do.

When you are sensing the conviction of the Holy Spirit, heed it and repent.

As it is written, we do not want to "quench" the Holy Spirit, heaven forbid.

The Holy Spirit is your "spiritual conscience".

Heed it.

It is evidence of salvation that you feel your own sinfulness with more intensity than before. Before you accepted Christ you didn't care and did not sense your own sinfulness at all. Then the Holy Spirit showed you that you needed Jesus to be your Saviour, and so you accepted Him. Then, you become very aware of your own sinfulness. This is because Jesus wants you to have more faith in Him than in yourself. Paul the apostle said, "In me dwells no good thing." He realised that his own righteousness was detestable to God and this drove him deeper into Christ so that his full faith and trust was in Christ and not in himself. It was then that he realised that there is no condemnation to those who are in Christ.

The sense of your own sinfulness is there to drive you into the arms of Christ, to come boldly to God's throne of grace to find mercy and grace to help in your time of need. It is there to humble you under the mighty hand of God. The guilt, shame and punishment of sin has been removed from you, so you don't have to be afraid of coming close to Christ and sharing your sins openly with Him. He says in 1 John 1:9 that when we talk openly about our sins He is faithful and just to forgive us and to cleans us from all unrighteousness.

You have the sentence of death in yourself so that you don't trust in yourself but in God who raises the dead. The reason why you feel your sinfulness is that you have a new heart and your spirit is alive to God, and so the flesh wars against the spirit. This is why there is a conflict in you over your sinfulness.

@lamb7, i jotted down some thoughts on this very thing. I'll share them here.

By the way, it is not a "curse" to be aware of a sin and then feel a burden about it. It just means that we need to confess it. In that regard, it's a GOOD thing. It's a "safety net", so to speak. It's the Holy Spirit at work within us, as Oscarr so succinctly posted above.

Here are some of my thoughts on it:

Why do we need to confess our sins if we are saved by grace?

Yes. We need to confess our sins, for there are, and will be, many. This is not a playground where we can just "coast" and not recognize that, as it is written, there is spiritual warfare raging, as we speak. As it is written, the devil, God's adversary, and ours, is walking about as a roaring lion seeking whom he may devour. THIS is why we are admonished to put on the full armor of God.

Do we, as believers, still sin? Of COURSE we, believers, still sin. We are not perfect, just forgiven. Our flesh wars against our spirit. Paul spoke of this. If we examine ourselves, we KNOW that we are not perfect, and that we sin many times a day,. in thought, word, or deed. We acknowledge it to God, and pray all the more for His forgiveness, as we repent from all that bombards us and we fall prey to. That's why we are admonished to "examine" ourselves. We KNOW that we are weak, and that it is GOD Who is strong. It is HIM in us, that is strong, not us. And there are times we grieve the Holy Spirit as we follow our own wills and that ol' pride rises up in us, as we think "we know best". THAT is sin. In looking even more closely, it is the "subtle" things we think, say, and do that are most damaging, because they are "hidden" and not seen from the outside, therefore we can prance along in all of our self-assured "righteousness" and be full o' not needing God and blind as an ol' bat. After all, if we're "righteous", what do we need God for? We've already "gotten there", right?

Our realization that we NEED God is a GOOD thing. Otherwise, are we saying we can do this WITHOUT God?

Think about what that means.

Seriously. Self examination is a GOOD thing.

Thank you for this Oscarr, this is what I originally felt it meant as well. I can really understand Paul what he speaks of in in Romans 7:15-20 and feel the sorrow since it is God I am sinning against more than fellow man.

I struggle with selfishness and I am really seeing how bad I am and how much I need the Holy Spirit to change my ways. I see now nothing I do is good, just when I think I am good, BOOM my selfishness just gets in there and it annoys me, it's like an alarm goes off and then I can't even enjoy that selfish behavior as I once did. I do not want to be like the world, everything is so ME ME ME and it is just off putting.

Yeah, that's me too, and ev'ry single believer, if they're honest. And you're right. Paul spoke of this very thing.

We are all in this together on our walk with God and encouraging and forgiving each other along the way as we ask forgiveness to our God because we're just stumblers and not perfect. Yet, there is a comfort in knowing that we have God's bless-ed Holy Spirit as our Guide and Protector, Who nudges us when we need to confess our many bumblings and get back on track.

Isn't it wondrously glorious that we CAN come to God and confess any and everything and we don't have to hide or run from Him?

He is our Father, and we can come BOLDLY to HIs throne of grace.

Is that precious, or WHAT??!!

No WONDER we can celebrate how GOOD He is and that His joy is ours.

Amen?

Ok, i feel a praise song comin' on.....

Praise God!!!

Exactly! Very true! Thank you for posting, yes John mentions to say if we are without sin the truth is not in us (1 John 1:8)

I need to get a bit better at discerning, God willing of course.
I have noticed a decrease in sin and not sinning to not grieve the Sprint, He clearly gets the credit for that one. This decrease did not happen until a year or so after I came to Christ and was baptized. I did not understand fully what it was all about, and what was sin and what was not according to our faith like sex before marriage, selfishness, drunkenness etc. then one day it just hit me and I knew why having a relationship with Christ was so important.

You find that in John 16:8-10, where Jesus tells us,

And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: 9 of sin, because they do not believe in Me; 10 of righteousness, because I go to My Father and you see Me no more;

It is and isn't true. The Holy Spirit no longer is convicted Christians of their sins. But the Holy Spirit still is convicting the world of sin, though, but that only pertains to unbelievers. But even with that, the only sins the Holy Spirit is convicting unbelievers of is the sin of not accepting Christ. Where we feel condemnation from is from our conscience, and from the devil. The devil will remind you of your sins and tell you how sorry of a Christian you are, and your conscience will condemn you because you know right and wrong. The Holy Spirit will never condemn you of your sins. He will never make you feel sorry or worthless because of a sin you commit.

Now that we are born again, the Holy Spirit is convicting us of righteousness. He is convicting us of who we are in Christ. He is showing us who we are in God, and he is convicting us of good things. Encouraging us to do good. He isn't guilting us into doing good, but rather showing you how good of a person you are.

Amen!!! God is GOOD!!! He TEACHES us as we walk with Him on this journey and at a very calm pace, and in His timing. He is a GOOD Shepherd and He has a close eye on us. He will bring to our mind and heart what we were blind to. It's an on-going process, and we can trust Him in it, and have PEACE during this process. What i also love about God is that He is very gentle with us in the teaching.

I wrote something on intimacy with God that i'll share with you if you'd like to read it.

Hmmm but wouldn't the devil want me to pursue the flesh and to sin? He would be like yes do YOUR will not God's Will. You are the god of your world. You are more important etc. He would convince me my sins are not so bad I feel.

The way I always saw it is that the Holy Spirit convicts us (Christians) of sins and the nonbelievers (world).

I do see how he would tell us and remind us of who we are in Christ, I feel he is putting His desires and my will to be in His will, but as I stand alone as a human I am not a good person. I wish. I need Jesus.

Sorry, I may have used the wrong wording. The devil is beating you up over your sins. He is trying to make you feel guilty, and feel worthless as you sin. He wants to kill your confidence with God.

Don't sell yourself so short. You may not feel it, but you are the righteousness of God. When he looks at you he doesn't see the dirty rotten sinner you use to be. He see a perfect, blameless and Holy you. When he sees you, he sees his Son, Christ in you. You are made in his righteousness now, and whether you feel like it or not, you ARE a good person. Plus, you will never stand alone because you now have God himself living within you. And he promised that he'd never leave you nor forsake you either.

Yes, correct.
For information, or rather truth on the subject read the gospel of John, especially from chapter 14
onwards where Jesus starts talking about the sending of the Comforter, the Spirit of truth, and the
work that the Spirit would perform in a disciple.

Romans 6 and Romans 8 both address this directly.
Read through the epistles for they are written to the church and teach us much about walking in the
Spirit and on Christian living > Children of light.
