How do, or can we "obey"...?

What is the best most effective way to obey?, and obey what exactly...?

Do we do so by knowing all the time knowing what "not to" do, or not...?

If not, then how does that work or operate...?

Comments...?

God Bless!

The most effective way is to arm yourself with scripture, so you can do Exactly what Jesus did when he was being tempted by the devil. Don't be afraid to speak to that voice that speaks to you, just like Jesus did. Quote whatever scripture teaches against the thing you're being tempted to do out loud, and your tempter will have no choice but to go to another topic or just leave in general.

Do not do anything against your conscience, and cultivate the fruit of the Spirit.

16 I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. 17 For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish. 18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.

19 Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, 20 idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, 21 envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.

22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law. 24 And those who are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. 26 Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another.

By obeying. :p

Jokes aside its not always easy to obey, even when we know what is right or wrong. When I feel guilt I know not to do something based on scripture. However sometimes I don't feel guilt until I'm already into a sin. But I guess thats why Jesus was sent. Because we will never be so perfect that we obey Him 100% of the time.

Whats weird is I won't deny God no matter what. You could have a gun to my head. However, despite that being a big deal, I can slip up and look at something I shouldn't online despite not having a gun to my head. So strange. But the devil is good at what he does. Thankfully over time Gods been building up strength in me in those areas where I am weak so I can resist more and more until one day I am free of yet another chain.

If you love Christ, then do as He said.

To learn his commandments to you, read His words to you in the gospels.

Christ says to you and me:

15“If you love me, keep my commands. 16And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever— 17the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will bec in you. 18I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.19Before long, the world will not see me anymore, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live. 20On that day you will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you. 21Whoever has my commands and keeps them is the one who loves me. The one who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love them and show myself to them.”

How does one "have his commands" (Jesus's) and keep them though...?

Excellent Scripture BTW...

God Bless!

What are his commandments to us, is it the same for everyone...?

God Bless!

Each thing He said to do, as we read things He directly said to you and to me to do. For example, one direct command, of several, is He tells you and me to love all of our brothers and sisters.

"A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another."

This is one of several commands He said to us. We learn them from His words.

How can we succeed? He tells us what makes us succeed in John chapter 15.

He said many things to you and me.

Right, so, is it complicated then...?

I mean Jesus didn't intend for us to have to know hundreds or more things, to do or not do, so as to studiously and exerting with much strain much self-effort to abide by, did he...?

God Bless!

His commandments to you and to me He spoke to us are clear and straightforward and very few.

I think that we all can understand them.

21 Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, “Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother or sister who sins against me? Up to seven times?”
22 Jesus answered, “I tell you, not seven times, but seventy times seven."

I get it, and I can't avoid it -- He said to me that I have to forgive my brother or sister over and over and over. It's understandable.

I need the parable to make it sink in fully, completely. So, even if He tells me to forgive ... I may not want to forgive someone in particular.

And He knew I would not.

So, He told you and I a parable about forgiving, so that I would get it 100%, and wouldn't try to make it only 70%....

So, even though I know to forgive, the parable brings it home to me --
the full forgiveness "in your heart" He said to do!

So, I need all the words, and not only the command.

He knew I would.

The Parable of the Unforgiving Debtor (from fully reading Matthew chapter 18) was very good for me to be able to really get it to the 100% as He meant for me to.

Fully in my heart forgiving. Not just on the outside.

Every word.

He knew.

there is a deeper current of reality we should be flowing in called our spiritual life. to "obey" implies a cold and distant relationship. love and wisdom, goodness and truth come from God and in fact God is those very things and they are the real life that Jesus promised we would have if we followed him.

There are several more, and the hours it takes to read through a gospel, over days or weeks, because of how it makes us stop and think, those hours are necessary to me. I can tell you all the commands now, but I don't think it's as good as hearing them from Him in His own Words more fully, with all the parables or pieces. From the parable, we learn the real forgiving -- fully in your heart.

Perhaps one of the most powerful ways to get how we need what He said to us, is how He said it works in us --

1 “I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. 2 He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful. 3You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you. 4 Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.

5“I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. 6 If you do not remain in me, you are like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned. 7 If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. 8 This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.

9 “As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. 10 If you keep my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commands and remain in his love. ...

(there is more...)

What are you trying to "obey"? Christ never uses the word "obey". Slaves obey.
I know, the word "obey" kinda grates me too, but, it is fitting...

A way of saying "What I need to, or should be, or should not be, doing, or being (like)..."

God Bless!
