Revelation 20:14 states, "And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death." This verse and many others relating to the destruction and death of the wicked lead me to believe this universe, the wicked, death, the devil, and hell will all one day be totally obliterated and destroyed.

What are your thoughts?

In think so. I think everything evil will be destroyed in Armageddon. Of course, He doesn't state this, so it isn't for me to judge. I'm just saying it's what makes sense according to scripture.

I agree. There is a lot of Scripture that supports this but I chose this verse because it seems clear and it is right near the end of the entire Bible.

When Jesus comes again I will be with him in the new heaven and new earth.
I won't be worried about those pale imitations of the real thing that we currently live in.
What wil have happened to all that rejects God won't interest me, it will have been dealt with.
There will be all of eternity to experience God.

I believe that literally whole heaven and earth , this universe will be one big lake of fire for eternal damnation for lost people , that's why we need new heaven and earth 2 Peter 3:10 .

Another great verse supporting the destruction of the universe and everything in it.

Hello, CDF47, and welcome to CF and to Traditional Theology. We are glad you've joined us. :)

You might be seeking answers other than the ways Christianity has traditionally understood these things, but you did post in Traditional Theology.

If you like, you can request to have the thread moved elsewhere to receive other answers.

Revelation 20:14 states, "And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death." This verse and many others relating to the destruction and death of the wicked lead me to believe this universe, the wicked, death, the devil, and hell will all one day be totally obliterated and destroyed.

The universe will not be destroyed, but will be restored. But that may be a bit of quibbling over semantics, because the works of men's hands during this age will not persist, and in the restoration all things will be made new, so from our perspective, there may not be a lot of difference.

The wicked will not be destroyed. We should hope for God's mercy, but there is judgement. Those who truly reject Him will suffer torment (even if of their own making). Souls are eternal.

Death will be destroyed. It is already defeated. At the end of this age, there will be no more death (it is speaking of physical death). No one will die anymore, so no more death.

Satan is left to God's judgement. I would prefer not to speculate his exact process/end, but he will experience torment as well.

Hell in that verse is a translation of Hades, which is simply the place of the dead waiting. Since there are no more dead, there is no more need of Hades. It will not exist anymore either.

This has been the understanding of Christianity from early times, and takes into account a wide understanding of Christian anthropology, eschatology, etc. and is not dependent only upon a literal reading of Revelation. (Revelation was very nearly not included in the canon of Scripture, and never read in general meetings, because it was considered that it could too easily lead to misunderstanding ... this is not a hiding of Scripture by the clergy, but rather a care by the entire Church that it not lead to errors.)

As I said, if you want more speculative interpretations, you can request the thread be moved. :)

And again, welcome!

Thanks for the welcome. I think I posted in the wrong spot,...LOL.

Thanks for the traditional explanation of the judgement for the wicked. I have non-traditional beliefs on this as you already knew.

I just think the wicked will be annihilated which Scripture appears to support. I believe the saved enter everlasting life in paradise.

The wages of sin is death. I believe this is an eternal death.

"The wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord." Romans 6:23. "Sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death." James 1:15. "God ... gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life." John 3:16.

The Bible says the wicked suffer "death" (Romans 6:23), will suffer "destruction" (Job 21:30), "shall perish" (Psalms 37:20), will "burn" up (Malachi 4:1), "shall be destroyed together" (Psalms 37:38), will "consume away" (Psalms 37:20), "shall be cut off" (Psalms 37:9), "shall be slain" (Psalms 62:3). God will "destroy" them (Psalms 145:20), and "fire shall devour them" (Psalms 21:9). It appears the wicked die and are destroyed.

We need to pray that those who do not know Jesus as their saviour and Lord. As well as seek to talk to them about their state before God.

I agree. I pray for them all the time. I try to discuss with some of them on an atheist forum but that can be difficult.

If you are posting on atheist forums, be sure to know what you are talking about and to pick your arguments very carefully.
Your'e role there is to educate about Christianity, to point out tat their view is unreasonable and to sow seeds. Seeds of doubt about atheism, seed of hope as you explain Christianity.

I try really hard to do that. I use Intelligent Design concepts of DNA, universe fine-tuning, molecular machines, the Big Bang,..., to discuss the science with them and also I discuss the Word of the Lord. It is a very difficult environment to post in. You have to wear your thick skin armor in there because some of them use manipulative debate tactics and smearing in their posts.

If I may make a suggestion, either only go on these sites once a week and to find oyher Christians who you can work with in talking to those who are willing to talk.

Study logic, I mean really get to know it and use it, as atheism can not explain why the laws of logic and science exists, these immaterial things exists in a world that the atheist claimsonly has material things in it.

Lastly seek to witness to the atheists who live or work with you, as long conversations are possible and while there are more interruptions you will also see if your witnessing has an effect.

I do what I can there. It would be nice to have other Christians on there to work with but every I'm on there it feels like 20 against 1 and they don't even seem to really care what you have to say. Many times it is their atheist agenda is all that matters to them it seems.

I will probably continue on the site.

Destruction does not necessarily mean annihilation. The language of judgment is frequently spoken about with the language of fire, and fire has two qualities often used throughout Scripture as well; namely fire destroys and fire purifies (and often, at the same time). It is the refiner's fire that purifies by destroying the impurities.

The use of brimstone (sulfur) in St. John's Apocalypse is interesting because in the ancient world sulfur was perceived to have purifying qualities, in Greek it is called θεῖον (theion), "divinity", because of its use as a purifying agent in sacred places.

So when we read in 2 Peter of the earth being judged with fire and the elements dissolving (etc) I don't think we should imagine here that God is going to cause creation to cease to exist; but rather the fire of God's judgment has come and "all that is in the earth and done in it will be disclosed"; this is not an act of annihilation, but an act of judgment from which ultimately comes renewal, "And I saw a new heavens and a new earth...".

I feel the fire will destroy the earth, the universe, hell, death, the wicked, and evil and then the saved will enter into a new earth and new heaven.

That is a good analogy you have as well.

The last year or so I've explored that and found that annihilation lines up, pretty well, with the Biblical doctrine of final judgment and the lake of fire. The more I think of it the more it make sense that people don't go to the fires of perdition to suffer, they suffer because they are sent there. It's the fires that go on forever, God has never created anything he cannot destroy. This includes the body and soul in the fires of perdition.

It makes a lot of sense to me as well. I have given it a lot of thought and prayer. Below is an article that explains the destruction of the universe using Bible verses:

Hell as we understand it in the Old Testament is virtually unknown. The word for Hell, γέεννα (geenna), is introduced by the Lord during the Sermon on the Mount. It is used 12 times in the New Testament, 11 times in the synoptic gospels by the Lord himself. The word is actually the name for a valley where the children of Israel used to toss their infant children as a sacrifice to Molech, the practice was known as making your children pass through the fire.

Hell is the place of the future punishment called "Gehenna" or "Gehenna of fire". This was originally the valley of Hinnom, south of Jerusalem, where the filth and dead animals of the city were cast out and burned; a fit symbol of the wicked and their future destruction. (Outline of Biblical Usage)

There are other passages that describe Hell:
  • "and will cast them into the furnace of fire. There will be wailing and gnashing of teeth. (Matt 13:42)
  • "And these will go away into everlasting punishment, but the righteous into eternal life." (Mat 25:46)
  • These shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power, (1Th. 1:9)
  • But we are not of those who draw back to perdition, but of those who believe to the saving of the soul. Heb. 10:39
  • These are wells without water, clouds carried by a tempest, for whom is reserved the blackness of darkness forever. (2Pet. 2:17)
  • raging waves of the sea, foaming up their own shame; wandering stars for whom is reserved the blackness of darkness forever. (Jude 1:13)
  • He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. He who overcomes shall not be hurt by the second death." (Rev. 2:11)
  • Then the beast was captured, and with him the false prophet who worked signs in his presence, by which he deceived those who received the mark of the beast and those who worshiped his image. These two were cast alive into the lake of fire burning with brimstone. (Rev. 19:20)
  • The devil, who deceived them, was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone where the beast and the false prophet are. And they will be tormented day and night forever and ever. (Rev. 20:10)
  • Then Death and Hades were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death (Rev 20:14)
  • "But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death." (Rev. 21:8)
Notice Rev. 20:10 says they will be tormented forever. Other places the fire is said to burn forever but the appears to be the only place that insists that they are tormented forever, at least in my estimation. I don't see much to argue about here, annihilation is one way of reading the texts in question that one proof text not withstanding. For me the one thing that was intriguing about the subject matter was the connection to Sheol, it's synonymous with the grave.

Grace and peace,
Mark
