If you lead a gay friend to Christ who happens to be legally married to a same-sex partner...would it be a sin for them to divorce? What about remarriage in a heterosexual relationship?
I hope I am never in that situation. What a tangle! I'm letting my more learned colleagues sort this one out. Phew!

In God's eyes it's only marriage between a man and a woman that is legally binding. Homosexual marriage is an abomination. If they got a divorce and if the person was truly committed to Christ, I don't think He'd mind. Is the remarriage with this same person?

You know I haven't used that word yet, but its probably how I feel.
There' still a part of me that feel sorry for gays and their predicament. But the other part of me is annoyed by their desire to normalise what is essentially abnormal. Now, that word "abnormal" has probably offended someone. It cant be helped, I'm sorry.

If we worry about offending, we'll never be able to speak because someone is always offended.

I understand your compassion. But there is also that choice that they make, right? They are choosing this type of lifestyle but there is always hope that they will genuinely see the error of their ways and turn to Christ! You can choose to turn to Christ or to deny Christ and continue to live in the sinful ways of the world. I think it's very sad that they are trying to "normalize" all things abnormal as well but hey, as Christians we know this is going to happen and every day it gets worse is every day closer to Jesus coming! The fact that homosexuality is an abomination to God, well God says it Himself. It's not some made up story. It's truth. I know the truth is very hard to swallow these days. THAT is something to be sad about.

Homosexual divorce/Heterosexual remarriage
Abomination or not, a gay marriage is still legally binding...but I understand what you are saying.

So is the homosexual going back to a previous straight partner? Or what is the story behind all that?

I'm getting closer to your viewpoint every day. I tend to agonise over these things. :)
I mean political correctness versus insensitivity. We should be able to express things frankly though.

There is no story. There is no going back to anyone. I threw the remarriage question in there as a future thought...it could happen that she would want to be in a straight relationship, have children. It's a reasonable thought process.

May I ask? Do you have any vested interest in this topic?

There is nothing "legal" about homosexual marriage in God's eyes, therefore, there is no possibility of divorce. You can't divorce someone you were never legally married to in the first place.

True. I've also heard that homosexual divorce is much harder to proceed with than that of a heterosexual couple. It might depend on the state laws.

Thanks for your input.

There will have to be a divorce, though, because the marriage is legal according to the laws of the land.

The answer is easy, at Canon law level.
They were never married, in a biblical sense. so such marriage would be annulled, not divorced. Certainly in Catholicism.

However the diplomacy and personal level would make this a nightmare to deal with in practice.

I hadn't heard that. I wonder why?
