What signs indicate that the end times are approaching?

Matthew 24:5–8 gives us some important clues for discerning the approach of the end times: “Many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am the Christ,’ and will deceive many. You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places. All these are the beginning of birth pains.” An increase in false messiahs, an increase in warfare, and increases in famines, plagues, and natural disasters—these are signs of the end times. In this passage, though, we are given a warning: we are not to be deceived, because these events are only the beginning of birth pains; the end is still to come.

Some interpreters point to every earthquake, every political upheaval, and every attack on Israel as a sure sign that the end times are rapidly approaching. While the events may signal the approach of the last days, they are not necessarily indicators that the end times have arrived. The apostle Paul warned that the last days would bring a marked increase in false teaching. “The Spirit clearly says that in later times some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons” (1 Timothy 4:1). The last days are described as “perilous times” because of the increasingly evil character of man and people who actively “oppose the truth” (2 Timothy 3:1–9; see also 2 Thessalonians 2:3).

Other possible signs would include a rebuilding of a Jewish temple in Jerusalem, increased hostility toward Israel, and advances toward a one-world government. The most prominent sign of the end times, however, is the nation of Israel. In 1948, Israel was recognized as a sovereign state, essentially for the first time since AD 70. God promised Abraham that his posterity would have Canaan as “an everlasting possession” (Genesis 17:8), and Ezekiel prophesied a physical and spiritual resuscitation of Israel (Ezekiel 37). Having Israel as a nation in its own land is important in light of end-times prophecy because of Israel’s prominence in eschatology (Daniel 10:14; 11:41; Revelation 11:8).

With these signs in mind, we can be wise and discerning in regard to the expectation of the end times. We should not, however, interpret any of these singular events as a clear indication of the soon arrival of the end times. God has given us enough information that we can be prepared, and that is what we are called to be as our hearts cry out, “Come, Lord Jesus” (Revelation 22:20).

First century Christians believed the end was around the corner and that was two thousand years ago. Then, in the year approx. 1000 AD Catholics expected the end of the world. Since it didn't arrive they began to teach that the kingdom is within each person and that its arrival is when each person accepts Christ.

Pastor Russell, founder of JWS denomination, announced the end for 1914. When it didn't arrive he explained it away with the presence of Christ being invisible and the end still very near.

That was approx. 100 years ago.

Then his denomination =hauled back and began another announcement of sorts for 1975. That also failed.

In the meantime humans who are EXTREMELY SHORT-LIVED, modified their short lives drastically to accommodate such prophecies. Some disregarded marriage leaving it for the millennium. Others sold properties in order to preach the Good News and assure themselves passage through the imminent Armageddon. Others disregarded crucial secular education, rejected jobs based on very sensitive Christian consciences-lost jobs due to persecution and were steeped in poverty exposed themselves to public humiliation and ridicule via celibacy, and a host of other inconveniences because the end was near.

Yet here we are now approaching 2020 with these same once extremely confident and very vociferous individuals, now arthritically hunched over, bleary eyed, having neglected many opportunities and with the only certain inevitable end in very clear sight being their death and burial or unceremonious disposal via cremation and disposal of their ground up bones into some land fill or garbage dump.

So Please STOP announcing certainties which you cannot be 100% guarantee! It can seriously mislead and in the process ruin lives!

I suggest you review Lk.21:36. When the prophetic facts reveal the return of Christ is at the door, it is time to be alert, not asleep.

Tell that to my mother who spent a great portion of her adult life in anticipation of the end and was recently cremated and had her bones pulverized and scattered.

Or tell it to my father who spent 16 years in agony fighting prostate cancer preventive surgical measures waiting and praying for mercy and who recently died from a heart attack.

We can speak in generalities, but no with specifics. If we do, then we set up people for false expectations that they will later come to deeply resent. Jesus clearly said that the day and hour no one knows. So why not stop with the self-assured predictions?

I think the last paragraph where it says that none of these signs should be interpreted as a singular event that points to the arrival of the end times. I think it is the culmination of all the signs which are building up and happening and I think this gives more depth and context to what is happening. For me, it is the signs where the world is rejecting God and believing that humans are gods themselves because of the technology we have. We are moving away from ideas about Gods laws and belief because people are being convinced that this is outdated, irrelevant and even a cause of problems.

I think there is a smaller number of people who are influencing things that are deceiving people. I am not sure if this is a concerted effort or just the way things are going. For example, the scientific thinking has been around for some time but it seems to be turning into a religion in some ways as well where people even mock God and belief. People have got good at making arguments against God and promoting materialistic thinking and naturalistic ideas about how life created itself and humans are the king of their world who can do anything.

The weird thing is that is despite the fact that we know in the background things are not going well and we have failed time and time again to stop doing the things that lead to problems people are still thinking we have the capability of working everything out. There seems to be almost a brainwashing going on. I am noticing this with the age of the internet and the media because the computer is able to produce lifelike images and blend this with unreal scenarios of superhumans and futuristic visions where everything is good and peaceful and technology is able to deal with all our problems.

I think as time goes by the world will push God out of the picture and be worshipping their own ability which will create this false worldview that many will fall for. In among this, we will see massive disasters of all sorts such as from global warming and financial breakdowns which will get harder to rationalise away and many will become anxious. But still the same will continue as the only solution will be to give up this way of life and turn to God which many will reject and put their faith in yet another rescue plan for mankind.

We are already seeing many of the signs mentioned such as famines, earthquakes in diverse places, wars and rumours of wars which have been happening for some time. As our continued effort to play god and mess with nature, we will see things like pestilence increase and ecosystems collapse. I think the rise in false prophets has been happening for some time but I think the main ones will not be associated with any church but will promote a secular type of religious belief about humans being able to create life and solve all our problems.

Isreal is in the process of planning to rebuild the temple and once this is done I think this will put them back in the limelight and draw attention to themselves which will create a new era of confrontation from others. It's all their and building up and as the bible says we may not know the exact time but we can know the signs like with the changes of a season. It's not the single signs like the leaves falling from the trees in Autumn but the entire change in atmosphere that tells us it is coming.

End time predictions are two a penny.

Why people keep going on and on about it saddens me. Some will believe ANYTHING!

Forget about trying to work out the signs! Concentrate on what Jesus taught instead.

Prophecy fulfilled......

2Pe 3:3 - knowing this first: that scoffers will come in the last days, walking according to their own lusts,
2Pe 3:4 - and saying, “Where is the promise of His coming? For since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of creation.”

Mid 1980s two British scientists discover a hole in the ozone layer , the same reason there's a hole in my socks , the fabric has worn thin. The bible talks about the sun burning men and sores upon the body , it ain't hard to see that the end is coming. And yet as mans intelligence continues to grow , so does his disbelief in these things. This is absolute proof that it doesn't pay to be smart , the more intelligent we are the dumber we become. Yep!..every one should be like me and remain an idiot , being an idiot allows one to see.

For me personally:
I have a lot more aches and pains now that I'm 64. When I was 24 the end seemed a lot farther off.;)

Though I'm kidding, I'm actually trying to make a point. I used to track this end times prophesy stuff like a total end times nerd back in the 80's. But one day it hit me, I'm getting into the whole debate about the end times and forgetting why the prophesy exists in the first place. For me, there is really nothing to debate. Sure, there are signs all around. In fact, my personal opinion is that "it" could happen any day. But I've studied it enough to be satisfied that when "it" happens, I'll be ready. And I'll recognize those signs when they happen.

I used to be a pre-tribber and became a mid-tribber (really pre-wrath), but nobody really knows. The bible is to coy about laying out the whole thing. There is a reason John was instructed not to write down what the seven thunders said. Prophesy exists for several reasons, "predicting the future" is not really one of them. At least not in the way most people think of it. Rarely do people identify a prophesy correctly until AFTER the event. And the result is that it PROVES the validity of what was said by the prophet. Another reason is as a warning.

So, I take all this prophesy stuff as a warning. And I'm watching and waiting, knowing that I'll know them when I see them. But in the end, most people who believe we are in the end times were right. They died. For them it WAS the end. And if we live to experience the end times we will know it.

And when you compare the world today to any time in history, it's quite obvious we are close to the end. But many of us will experience our personal end before the big one comes. And, in the end, no pun intended, that is what it is really all about.

Romans 8:19-23 The created universe is waiting with eager expectation for God’s sons to be revealed. It was His choice to subject all things to mortality and decay, with the eventual goal of His people entering into the glorious liberty of immortality and a renewed creation. Up to the present as we know, the whole of creation, in all its parts, groans as if in the pangs of childbirth. What is more, we also, to whom the Spirit is given as first-fruits of the harvest to come, are inwardly groaning in anticipation of our adoption as children of God and our liberation from mortality.
'God's Sons' - every faithful Christian. John 3:16, Romans 9:24-26, 1 Peter 2:9-10

Isaiah 42:13-15 The Lord has kept silence and restrained Himself for all this age, allowing this world to go its own way. But as the appointed time approaches, He is like a woman in labour, prepared and ready to take action. The Lord will go forth as a warrior, roused to a fury in the heat of battle. He will shout His battle cry and will triumph over His enemies. The land will be laid to waste, all the plants and trees will burn and the streams and lakes will become dry. Isaiah 63:4, Habakkuk 2:3, Jeremiah 4:23-28

Matthew 24:3-8 Lord; tell us the signs of the end of this age. Jesus replied: Take care that no-one misleads you, for many false Messiahs and teachers will come and many will be fooled by them. The time is coming when you will hear of wars and rumours of wars, for there will be an increase of wars, earthquakes, diseases and famines. All these things are the birth pangs of the new age. Jeremiah 15:2

As Jesus prophesied, there will be wars, earthquakes, diseases and famines at the end of this age. He likened these things to ‘birth pangs’. When we consider normal childbirth, the labour pangs are separated by periods of relative calm. So if there have been times when clusters of those four disasters have occurred, we can ascertain that time must be very short for this age. Here are the facts:

1/ In 1914-19, World War 1 occurred. There were 7 earthquakes of over 8 magnitude. Smallpox and typhus killed millions, but Spanish flu killed at least 50 million in 1918/19. There were terrible famines in Europe and Russia.

2/ During 1939-45 there was World War 2 and 8 earthquakes of over 8 magnitude. Typhus again killed millions, in North Africa, in Iran and Europe. Anne Frank died of typhus. A terrible famine in China killed at least 45 million.

3/ The data suggests that the third ‘birth pang’, commenced in Nov. 11, 2001. Wars and rumours of wars are rife. It is considered that the global war on terrorism is a world war. There have been more than 14 earthquakes of 8 and two over 9 magnitude. Diseases such as cancer and AIDs were of epidemic proportions. Crop failures due to unusual weather and wars result in famines in Asia, Russia and Africa.

4/ The fourth and final ‘birth pang’, will be the Great Tribulation, of the Seven Trumpets and Seven Bowls, so vividly described in Revelation, but ending with the Return of Jesus and the birth of the Millennial era.

But the last, most shocking and devastating event of the third birth pang, will be the great Day of the Lord’s vengeance and wrath. The next prophesied event we can expect, the Sixth Seal worldwide disaster. This will be the many prophesied ‘fire from the sun', Isaiah 30:26, that describes a huge Coronal Mass Ejection sunstrike, will affect the whole world, killing probably billions. This will enable two things; the establishment of a One World Government and the re-settling of the Lord’s people into all of the holy Land. The time gap of the Seventh Seal, Revelation 8:1, [1/2 hour in Heaven = 20 years on earth] from this CME until the Great Tribulation is prophesied as a time of peace and prosperity. After the G.T. Jesus will Return for His Millennial reign.

Keras my dear buddy, you are locked in to fantasy.

End times have been around since early Christian times!

As far as I am concerned most of the prophesies in Revelation have been and gone. People try and extract doom and gloom from it without fully understanding the way in which it was written and for the generation it was written to. Yes, we can read it and learn from it.

This, is the most overlooked or rejected part of Revelation:

Revelation 1:1-3

1 The revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave him to show to his servants what must soon take place; and he made it known by sending his angel to his servant John, 2 who bore witness to the word of God and to the testimony of Jesus Christ, even to all that he saw. 3 Blessed is he who reads aloud the words of the prophecy, and blessed are those who hear, and who keep what is written therein; for the time is near.

I remember back in the 80's when I used to get into discussions about this I was one of those people that said, "Well, a day is as a thousand years, etc." to explain the above.

Except, to take that position, you make the words meaningless and pointless. God speaks to people in a way that allows humans to understand what he's saying. When he says "the time is near", he means "from a human perspective". And no human thinks "near" is 2,000 + years.

This idea is simply impossible. In no way has the plainly described events of Revelation happened yet.
That generation in the first century did have it mighty tough, but none of it fulfilled any of Revelations prophecies. You will be one of the majority that will be surprised and shocked when things really start to happen.
The 'one day = 1000 years' formula, stands. The Bible uses it several times. The fact that Biblical history is divided exactly into 1000 year periods, proves this. We are now almost at the end of 6000 years since Adam.
Who thinks the world will continue on as we are now, for much longer?

The 'one day = 1000 years' formula, stands. The Bible uses it several times. The fact that Biblical history is divided exactly into 1000 year periods, proves this. We are now almost at the end of 6000 years since Adam.
Who thinks the world will continue on as we are now, for much longer?
Have understanding of the Plan of the Ages. In the sixth day, the leaven of sin had entered into the garden; and on the seventh, God rested and blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it. Here is wisdom: Six days, creation; the seventh, rest, holy. Six days since Adam; the seventh, rest, holy. Six days in the week; the seventh, rest, holy.

Be realistic.

How many generations have asked how much longer will the world continue as it is? Right back to the early church.

Many things have happened throughout history where people thought 'now was the time'.

You are reading scriptures through the wrong glasses my friend. You are trying to make the scriptures suit your ideas / beliefs. As I stated, this is the bit that people like you just brush past or twist So that it suits your own beliefs:

Revelation 1:1-3

1 The revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave him to show to his servants what must soon take place; and he made it known by sending his angel to his servant John, 2 who bore witness to the word of God and to the testimony of Jesus Christ, even to all that he saw. 3 Blessed is he who reads aloud the words of the prophecy, and blessed are those who hear, and who keep what is written therein; for the time is near.

What signs indicate that the end times are approaching?
The next and last big one is going to be when the EU reforms into to that ten leader form of government with one leader over them (20XX).

Caused by either a financial crisis or furthering in countries wanting to leave the EU or a combination thereof.

Both Israel becoming a nation again (1948), and Jerusalem back in the hands of the Jews (1967) were the previous two big ones.

One (Israel), two (Jerusalem), three (EU ten leaders)....Go!
