Well I'll never pass up a bag at the side of the road ever again. Can't say I would have done what these nice people did with the money.
I don't know, you find a tenner on the floor it's your lucky day, you find ten thousand it probably spells trouble.

What in the world does civil forfeiture have to do with finding 14k$ unattended on the side of the road?

Under civil forfeiture rules, many folks have had their bundles of cash seized when the cops merely "suspect" they're using it for drugs. I've heard "I was going to buy a car" used on several occasions to explain why the folks were carrying wads of cash in the first place.

Uh huh....but since this wasn't "someone's bundle of cash" which appeared to be the proceeds of illegal activity, civil forfeiture doesn't have anything to do with it.

Most likely the cop would take it to be held for a period of time to allow the rightful owner to come forward and claim it.

That's a far cry from civil forfeiture.

For the record, I was kinda half-joking.

But there have been plenty of cases where property has been seized under dubious suspicions/claims of "illegal activity", where the mere presence of a few thousands dollars in cash is enough to allegedly warrant "suspicion". My joke was that *this was a bundle of cash, therefore it's automatically suspicious and the cops will seize it*.

And it is suspicious. It's one reason why I understand handing it in, it's too much to be anything but trouble.
