So bottom line, if you are not with Christ you go to hell? Or in the case of those who don't believe in a literal hell, to eternal separation from God?

I once heard about the Pope saying that even atheists can be saved if they are genuinely good people.

What are your thoughts?

I disagree with the Pope on this matter--IF this is indeed what he said. I know that several Popes have suggested that the blood of Christ will be applied to even sincere PAGANS but I don't recall them having included Atheists. Maybe they did. At any rate, there is very little in scripture that supports such a view and plenty that says the opposite.

Only Jesus can make us right with God and He already did. IF a good person-unbeliever is saved it is because Christ merits were applied to that person. Not because they were good.

Elaborate.

I don't personally believe you need a pope, priest or any of those things ... You need to submit your life to God completely and follow his Word. I guess it all starts with Repentance and Faith.

The only unforgivable sin is rejecting God's Holy Spirit.
Men have given God many names and writings.
I think Jesus was the real son of God but millions don't
know the story.

I don't think the bible teaches hell OR eternal separation and your belief gets to choose which one you get.
I would say hell is eternal separation.

As to the Pope...goodness doesn't get you into heaven.

John 6:65 Then Jesus said, "This is why I told you that no one can come to Me unless the Father has granted it to him."

It's not what we do that gets us saved...it's what Christ did.

I'm not saying it's what WE do. It all starts with what Christ did - his unmerited grace and mercy. What did Christ preach? Repentance and Faith among other things. So as a follower of Christ I follow these things ... I'm not saved because I do these things but I can have a hope in salvation to come because I TRUST in what my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ says and so I do them. It's really simple. He said if you FOLLOW me, HIS teachings (repentance and faith among other things) then you are my disciples indeed
"Then said Jesus to those Jews who believed in Him, “If ye continue in My Word, then are ye My disciples indeed." John 8:31

"And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?" Luke 6:46

" What does it profit, my brethren, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can faith save him?" James 2:14

WOE unto any "Christian" who JUST ACCEPTS and does not follow. Okay so you accept this gift of Salvation and then what? You go on your merry way like you were before?

"Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble" - James 2:19

Every action has a reaction. Just saying

I would say you follow...work...bcause of your salvation. It's a by-product.
If you simply go on your merry way i doubt your saved.

The bottom line is that Christianity is the only religion whereby one is saved without working for it. For all other religions, to be saved, one must work for it before, during, or after.

I agree our goodness doesn't but Christ goodness does. But if we claim to be Christian and saved and we do evil things then what?
Depends. You don't want to be a stumbling block to your brothers/sisters. If you are, the elders will 'put you out'. If they don't, they have a problem. If you are informed, you should repent. If you don't, then it depends.

Christianity is the only religion where God reaches out to man.
Other religions teach that man has to reach (or do good deeds) to reach God

I believe that the bible is the God inspired true word of God. (see dead sea scrolls)
Probably the most recognizable scripture in the bible John 3:16 For God so loved the world that he sent his only begotten son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
Romans 10:9 ; If you declare with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord", and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. (from hell)

The pope? they believe the bible was somehow corrupted, so (in my view) have written their own version
God Bless

Are you familiar with CS Lewis? In the last one of the Narnian Chronicals, "The Last Battle," there is a Calormen soldier who has grown up in a country where the religion is the worship of a demon named Tash. Now the true God is the Great Lion Aslan, son of the Emporer over Seas. The Calormen soldier meets Aslan in heaven and immediately bows down, loving him with all his heart; he is surprised that Aslan does not irradicate him immediately for he has served Tash with all his heart for all his life. Aslan explains that Tash is as evil as He is good, that they are so different, that no act of love can be credited to Tash and no act of evil credited to Aslan. So all the acts of love and service and bravery that the soldier had done were all credited to Aslan, that indeed it had been Aslan he had served all his life, though he knew it not.
