Genesis 49:8-12

Judah is the the son of Jacob. Jacob (and Judah) are from the promised line where God promised to Abraham (Jacob's grandad), that the land of Israel will be given to his descendants.

In the passage quoted above, is one where Jacob is on his death bed, he blesses his sons and prophesies their future.

The reference to the Lion speaks of Christ and his victory over his enemies.

Judah is to be the Kingly tribe - the sceptre will not depart from Judah. Our Lord Jesus is a descendant from that tribe and the King of Israel. Before he was rejected, in the future, he will reign victorious.

Jesus came from the tribe of Judah through his earthly lineage on Josephs side but actually his real Father is God.

Jesus is the lamb of God, not the lion.
When they refer to the lion it was because the messiah was expected to come from this tribe, and Kings have descended from Judah throughout Israelite history.

What happened was Jesus was basically sacrificed on the cross, due to those in the tribe of Judah (now known as the Jews) calling for his crucifixtion. In revelation the lion is depicted slaying the lamb. The lamb is on the throne, not the lion. Because the lamb of God, Jesus, overcame and rose from the dead!

Hello!

Why is Jesus the Lion of the tribe of Judah? (and who is Judah)

Thank you.

Jacob is one of the twin sons born to Rebekah and Issac...the other twin named Esau.
Jacob name mean: "he deceives"....Genesis 25:26.
Before the twins were born, Rebekah had a rough pregnancy and she inquired of God
what was happening to her and God replied with this in Genesis 25:23.
More on Jacob here: Genesis chapters: 25-36...Jacob is the builder of the 12 tribes
through his wives(who are also sisters) Leah and Rachel and concubines(servants
of Leah and Rachel.) 12 sons and there is a daughter...Dinah.

Jacob called his son Judah- a lion's cub, Jacob prophesied that the Messiah would
come from the tribe of Judah and be ruler over the nations...read chapter 49 of
Genesis.

"Lion of Judah" be a messianic title...messianic means "relating to the Messiah".
Messiah- Yeshua...which in english translation becomes Jesus.
Yeshua means... the Lord's Salvation.

In the Messiah, there is neither Jew or Gentile, neither slave nor free...Galatians 3:28.
Also, "Lion of Judah" refers to the Messiah's second coming and the "Lamb of God" title
relates to the Messiah's first coming.

Revelation 5:5...it is the Lion of the tribe of Judah that is worthy to open the scroll
and it's seven seals.

Here is a synopsis of Judah's role in the bible, which may provide you with some insight.

God made a covenant with Abraham for land and seed (both many decendants and the Seed = Jesus). Abaham had Isaac, Isaac had Jacob and Esau. Esau did not choose God, and Jacob more or less did, so the covenant promise followed him. Jacob had 12 sons by 2 sisters-by-blood wives who were bitter rivals for his affection. Leah, the unfavored one, had a God-blessed womb. She had her first three sons and named them according to her hope that her husband would now love her more with this one. Then she had her 4th - Judah, who's name means, simply, praising God.

After the 12 sons were born - two from Rachel the favored wife, Joseph and Benjamin. Joseph was the favorite son, and the others (which included sons from his wives' servants) were jealous, so they threw him in a pit to die. Then some slave traders came by and Judah was the one who suggested they sell him. This is how Joseph came to Egypt, and eventually landed a second-in-command gig over the entire country, preparing for whole region famine and instrumental in saving the clan of Israel (Jacob was also named Israel at this point). In the midst of the famine, Jacob, back in Canaan, sent all his sons except Benjamin, his now favorite son since he thinks Joseph is dead, to buy food. Joseph benevolently manipulates them into coming to Egypt for salvation from starvation through a series of events in which Benjamin is required to go to Egypt. Jacob doesn't want him to go, but Judah steps up and promises his protection.

Much later, when the 12 tribes - names based on the 12 sons of Jacob - are layed out in the promised land, the tribe of Judah encompasses much of the southern part of the promised land, and little Benjamin just above it. When the nation of Israel split, the northern kingdom retained the name of Israel, and the southern kingdom took on the name of Judah, and included only the tribes of Judah and Benjamin. Judah was the last kingdom to fall into apostasy and be sent into exile. Most of the godly kings in the long series of kings of the northern and southern kingdoms came from the southern kingdom.

Also, Jerusalem is located in what was Benjamin's territory. Bethlehem is located in what was Judah's territory.
