I hear people saying it all the time "only God can judge me" or "don't judge me." What does that mean exactly? If I were to look at someone who confesses to believe and Jesus Christ, and yet, their life does not show any sign of it, would telling them that they are not saved or living Christlike be judging them? Or is it simply speaking the truth in love?

What do you consider as judging someone? Please provide an example.
What is considered speaking the truth in love? Example?

Loving truth:
"Living with that woman unmarried is dangerous. Trust me. Next thing you know you may end up being in big sin! Save yourself the pain of what may happen and move out and/or get married."

Judging:
"I would never live with someone unmarried because I am a good christian. You probably do other sins to. Your a reprobate and may end up in hell!"

I also point out my signature picture. Also theres a recent post here about the issue to:
What is judging?

That post sparked my question but I felt like it didn't quite speak to what I am curious about.

Ah ok I see. :)

Sorry I forgot to answer this part, must have forgot to quote it.

Well thats a tough one. For example on this forum we cannot hint that someone may be saved or not. And offline I try not to do the same because even if someone show signs of it, only God would really know their heart. Now in my heart I feel like... well lets use my exfriend. He is a hardcore atheist. I know all he does. So if he told me he was saved and still does every single thing he used to, I would think he is not saved. Because when saved we are "reborn" so to speak. Hence the born again part.

Which means your past is behind you and you work to change. Now would God say he is saved? Well if I recall I was taught if you let Jesus into your heart, like you were at a christian event and did it. But didn't really mean it and did it for show. Then you are not saved. Again maybe I am wrong.

Would I tell my friend I don't think hes saved. I don't think I would. Maybe I would ask why he still does certain things and ask if he needs prayer or help breaking free of those chains. But I wouldn't directly confront him bluntly. Speaking about his sin nicely I think would be out of love. Where as questioning his salvation would be judging.

It's alright. Do you think it would be wrong to call out their sin? Only if they claim to be saved. But not deny their salvation?

first off, people who often say "Only God can judge me" or "Don't judge me" are the ones who usually know exactly what is wrong; they're just tired of hearing what is wrong from other people because they don't want to deal with it.
In that case they are right--God will indeed judge them--so anything a person could say to them would just go in one ear and out the other.
save your breath.

If you were to look at someone who confesses Christ and yet their life doesn't show any signs of it--unless you know them personally and are the person who is in charge of teaching them--back off.
This is a case of "too many cooks spoil the broth."

So the question then becomes "when is it ok to judge another?"
and the answer is:
1. when you're in direct charge of any aspect of their life.
ie. teacher, parent, coach, pastor, etc.

and that also takes care of speaking the truth in love, because only a person who has love as their only motive will know how much is love and how much is truth.

Jesus said: "These people honour me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me"
And he also said that all should "love their neighbour as themselves".

It saddens me when I see the word of God used as ammunition in a combat sport to attack others. It is what the pharisees did.

So I would say if you see something you do not agree with , use that opportunity to study the basis of why do you think what you do?
Particularly if it concerns disagreeing with what you think the beliefs of another group are. How sure are you they believe what you think? Is it just hearsay? How certain is your own foundation? What did early christian writings say? What do the church fathers think? Why do the church fathers disagree with you if they do on that matter?

Then when sure of the footing, of why you may disagree, explain why you disagree , and logical conclusion from that, and then move on. Read the answers. You often learn something...

But in conclusion -Do not use that disagreement to judge any , the motives of any, or the salvation of any.

That is for God alone to judge.

This is true. But I also struggle with this. Scripture tells us not to hang out with other people who claim to be Christians, but are living a sinful lifestyle.

But I struggle with lust, which is adultery. Does that mean other Christians should not hang out with me?

I don't know.

I was speaking more along the lines of actions, rather than doctrines. For example, someone who confesses to be a believer, and yet at the same time is sleeping with their girlfriend and living with them before marriage.

It is not our responsibility to determine who is saved and who is not saved. Jesus said in Matthew in the parable of the wheat and the tares that they both should be allowed to grow together until the harvest because if you try to pull up the tares, you may inadvertently pull up some wheat as well. So let God be the one to determine who is saved or lost. What we can do is to point out wrong and right based on the standards and principles of God's word. That would not be judging the person, but judging the action.
