Newall: Counting stones and broken glass, post election
The night the first stone came through the window, the synagogue was crowded.

There was much to celebrate at Temple Menorah-Keneseth Chai that Friday in early December. Ginny and Paul Witte's golden wedding anniversary, for one. To mark the occasion, Ginny and Paul had sponsored the night's Oneg Shabbat, the celebratory gathering after Sabbath services, providing fresh pastries and a chocolate-and-vanilla cake, with the temple's Manischewitz uncorked and ready for a toast.
They must be fans of Pepe.

Who is that? A friend of mine was in Florida visiting her elderly dad a couple of weeks after the election and she got called out coming from a restaurant.

"Thank God Trump is going to rid the country of your filth...."

Pepe the frog is a cartoon character made for a comic and then got turned into a meme. Thanks to the Alt-Right he is now a symbol for racism.

Actually, while the Alt Right has done a fair bit to associate themselves with Pepe, you're just as likely to find libertarians, non-alt right conservatives, internet posters, and others who use Pepe without any sort of alt right connotations. In fact, many of these groups oppose the alt right on numerous grounds.

Know Your Meme.com does a better job of explaining Pepe than most anything else out there, but I can't direct link because they do show examples of how he's used by various groups, including the bad guys.

Also, I ended up doing an entire video on the faux controversy for my YouTube page, so...

Pepe is meant as an expression gif, but he is now a mascot of racists. I find it odd that right-leaning people would adopt the mascot of white supremacists concurrently. They could easily pick another member, but they want the one being used by the racists and antisemites.

Look at it this way.

Every time individual Black Lives Matter groups break the law, terrorize others, and call for mass murder, we're told that BLM as a whole is not a terrorist organization that that the people who are "hijacking" the movement to do these things don't represent it.

The principal is, at its heart, the same as what we're seeing here: not everyone who uses the Pepe icon is alt right, and so people shouldn't jump to conclusions and slam Pepe as being a racist symbol because of it.
