There's a growing hypnotic spiritualist movement. A very nice man on another site once explained it to me in detail.

People go to "certified" counselors who are certified by one man. A patient is put under hypnosis to reveal their previous lives. It's amazing how many of the patients find out they had famous "spirit lives." Emperors, fighter pilots, kings, queens etc. Apparently no street sweepers or peasants.

Everyone who comes under this hypnotic state amazingly comes away with the same understanding of a spirit holding area after life.

Now, I've met people who claim a previous life experience but not from these hypnotic hustlers. A fellow college student (a bit eccentric) swore he was Julius Caesar in a previous life. He often complained of sharp pains in his back.

Eccentric as he was, his spring open air Shakespeare performances were quite good.

Yeah I don't trust hypnotism, it's really risky, y'know, 'cause I got this cousin Billy, he was at this nightclub where they had a hypnotizer act and he volunteered, you know, 'cause it's just harmless fun right? So the hypnotist guy turns Billy into a chicken, right, and the guy's supposed to say some special words to unhypnotize him, but about 30 seconds into being a chicken the hypnotist guy has this massive heart attack and dies on stage, and in all the excitement you know, people didn't remember what the special words were, so Billy spent the next 5 years as a chicken, which was not good for his career because not surprisingly, going around pecking at your own droppings is considered "inappropriate workplace behavior" most places, but anyway Billy didn't stop being a chicken until someone said to him "stop being a chicken" and it turned out those were the magic words. He still clucks occasionally when he drinks but we're not sure if he's messing with us or what.
