My son (about to turn 16) finished up 9th grade with homeschooling due to anxiety issues, and he'll be starting 10th grade at home as well. Though our goal is to get him back to school, we don't know how long it will be, and he deeply misses his friends and feels socially isolated now. I'd love to find a way to connect him with other homeschooled kids around his age, so he can make some friends, even if it's online for now.

I believe there is a section on here for homeschoolers that you need to ask a Mod to give you access to.

I was homeschooled growing up (yup, all 12 years) and we used belonged to homeschool "groups". There may be something like that in your area?
They used to set up regular events & field trips etc.

My kids are both being homeschooled right now, with my mom who is a former teacher. Just a couple weeks in and I already feel like they are getting more lesson time than they did at school. There are distinct advantages to not having so many kids in the "classroom".

I go to an OHS. It's nice bc you still have teachers with expertise in their subject & you still have classroom discussions & can still see your friends. I was in the youth orchestra so that needed a lot of time. I am thinking about transferring to a school here bc I'm lonely now that we moved.

So how did you like the experience of being homeschooled? (Nothing to compare it with, I guess...)

The trouble is that my son's situation is a bit unique; he's only homeschooled right now due to his anxiety issues. So he wouldn't be able to attend any groups or field trips at this point (he can't be away from home too long). That's why I was hoping to connect him to some other kids online, who could relate to his situation and offer some support and friendship.

Mostly positive, I had friends that were in public school & from what they told me, dont think I was missing much (One girls sister dropped out of 10th grade after having her hand pinned to a locker with a knife:confused: )
I generally spent a lot less time doing my studies & then went out with the horse running around the woods like a hooligan the rest of the day :D

How does it work? Can he connect with other kids through it? Our classes are live & we have social stuff.
It's online classes that are monitored by one assigned teacher. It's not live classes and there's no social aspect :-/ At least none that I know of. I'll do some more research today.

If he is enrolled in a public K12 program they have interactive online clubs.

The program he's in is called Homebound. Since he's not "officially" homeschooled - this is a temporary setup due to his medical/mental condition, it's a bit different, I guess. Thanks, though. I did find some email addresses for local homeschool support groups and sent out some inquiries.

:( That's too bad. Did you get my PM? I gave you the name of my school in it, bc I didn't want to write it here. Maybe it would interest him.

We homeschooled all three of our kids, currently in 8th, 10th, and a freshman in college (full-ride academic scholarship, yay!). We've participated in several homeschool groups in our area as well as 4H, with mixed results. All have been semi-active in church youth activities, in fact we recently moved to a new church that's closer, larger, and more active to give them more opportunities.

Also, check with your local school. We live in an area that's very homeschool-friendly, homeschooled children are considered part of the local school system. My oldest played on varsity sports teams and any homeschool child may participate in any after-school activity or even enroll for single classes as desired. Also check out local community colleges for dual-enrollment options, my oldest completed almost two years worth of university credits where we only had to pay the cost of renting her textbooks (again, yay!). She got credits, acclimated to a university teaching style, and made many friends.

Homeschooling doesn't have to mean schooling at home.

Our state is also homeschooler friendly. We have the same options that you do in extra-curricular activities, arts classes, and academic class participation.
Unfortunately we do not have a college within driving distance for regular classes but our public system and the state universities have worked together to provide high school students college level accredited classes online. Homeschool students have the same access.
