Which is why this new "popular thread" home page is a bad idea.As an outsider who is (usually) respectful (he says, expecting to be corrected), I do remember when the new software came out and on almost every single popular thread people were coming in condemning what the Pope said or arguing that Catholicism isn't Christian and the like. I'm not sure if everybody remembers that, but it was clear because every popular thread ended up being locked at least once for a cleanup. The disruption really did harm good discussions.
I think you make a point @AvilaSurfer, but if people were wandering into your parish without knowing what it was and started telling your priest that the Pope is the antichrist, you probably would be more leery of visitors who didn't know what they were walking into.
for it to work - it needs to show 'Catholic' on it... so ppl know. For awhile now we have been given several opinions by members of OBOB about posts from here showing up in the new posts section. There are some pros and cons to both sides of the issue. So we are going to have a poll on what the community wants.
At the moment posts from OBOB do not show up in new posts. They do show up in most replies.
When posts showed up in new posts we had many people just click on the link and come post in OBOB with things that were against Catholic teaching because they did not know where the link took them. But some feel it is good to have the posts show up in new posts.
So here are the options. You can have posts show up in new posts or not.
If you choose to have them show up realize more people will come in not knowing where they are. When this happens your response should be to say: "I think you came here following a link and don't realize you are in the Catholic section where you can not post against or debate Catholic beliefs."
You do not engage in the debate and expand it. You do not begin an argument. We have very few staff and we do not always have staff online and free to handle this kind of issue within moments. That means that if you open this door, you have the responsibility to not escalate the situation. So if someone posts against the SOP following the link this is what happens:
1. A person responds: "I think you came here following a link and don't realize you are in the Catholic section where you can not post against or debate Catholic beliefs."
2. The person who does that, report the post so we can delete it when staff can get to it.
3. If the person continues to debate tell them again they can not debate Catholic beliefs. Staff will see that they continued to debate and act accordingly.
But everyone refuse to engage in the debate. Everyone Refuse to escalate.
Voting yes to having these links activated in New Posts is an agreement to these steps.
So here is the poll for 7 days. Should OBOB have posts showing up in New Posts. Yes or No. This post is open to Catholics who consider themselves Members of OBOB.
Yeah some sort of warning it is a closed congregation would help. That mechanism isn't available at this point, like a splash warning or a highlighted tag. If it was available we would ask to use it. I can ask for that to be looked at in the future. But at the moment it is not possible.
I don't mind people of other faiths showing up. But when they do I think they should know that this is a place for Catholics so they can know that there's a limit to how far someone can go in debating us.
I'm not afraid of debating people. I'm just not interested in doing it all the time. Also, I'm trying to be fair to non-Catholics.I think the real question is: Why are you so afraid of people debating you? If your beliefs are true then they will stand on their own merit.

1 - this is a safe haven not to be debated in.I think the real question is: Why are you so afraid of people debating you? If your beliefs are true then they will stand on their own merit.

You should take it as an opportunity to share your faith versus an offensive burden.
Tell 'em David.Since you read the opening post you know you are in OBOB. You don't get a vote here. And you should not be posting here. Stop it.
You are breaking the rules...of the congregational forums if you debate in an area not of your own faith. Then don't participate, no one is forcing you to hit the reply button.
