For awhile now we have been given several opinions by members of OBOB about posts from here showing up in the new posts section. There are some pros and cons to both sides of the issue. So we are going to have a poll on what the community wants.

At the moment posts from OBOB do not show up in new posts. They do show up in most replies.

When posts showed up in new posts we had many people just click on the link and come post in OBOB with things that were against Catholic teaching because they did not know where the link took them. But some feel it is good to have the posts show up in new posts.

So here are the options. You can have posts show up in new posts or not.

If you choose to have them show up realize more people will come in not knowing where they are. When this happens your response should be to say: "I think you came here following a link and don't realize you are in the Catholic section where you can not post against or debate Catholic beliefs."

You do not engage in the debate and expand it. You do not begin an argument. We have very few staff and we do not always have staff online and free to handle this kind of issue within moments. That means that if you open this door, you have the responsibility to not escalate the situation. So if someone posts against the SOP following the link this is what happens:

1. A person responds: "I think you came here following a link and don't realize you are in the Catholic section where you can not post against or debate Catholic beliefs."

2. The person who does that, report the post so we can delete it when staff can get to it.

3. If the person continues to debate tell them again they can not debate Catholic beliefs. Staff will see that they continued to debate and act accordingly.

But everyone refuse to engage in the debate. Everyone Refuse to escalate.

Voting yes to having these links activated in New Posts is an agreement to these steps.

So here is the poll for 7 days. Should OBOB have posts showing up in New Posts. Yes or No. This post is open to Catholics who consider themselves Members of OBOB.

I voted no because I don't want a bunch of random people of other faiths accidentally stumbling in and arguing against Catholicism before realizing that they are in a Catholic sub-forum.

That's why it was removed in the first place and why I'm voting no as well.

I agree with this.

Whenever that happened it was usually a nuisance at best and a total catastrophe at worst.

I believe they should show up. But I'm the first yes. :p
I don't mind people of other faiths showing up. But when they do I think they should know that this is a place for Catholics so they can know that there's a limit to how far someone can go in debating us.

certainly one of the considerations in this is the extra workload that an already slim staff would have to deal with
as the fallout from such a change.
That's called 'overload' for both staff and members.

Everything that is manufactured and is designed to carry a load as part of it's performance also
had a recommended load tollerence limit.
To exceed that limit on a regular basis not only affects the performance of the
machine, but it also shortens the useful life of the machine itself.

the same thing happens to a forum.

so in the long run, if it is desired by the members to open the forum posts to others by
advertizing them outside of the forum,
then some accomodation must be made elsewhere so that the forum can take the additional strain.

Without a sudden influx of new staffers, there would seem to be only three other options:
1. initiate a 'delayed' (approved) posting for all posts in the forum. or
2. reduce the hours available for posting until a staff member can be available to moniter new posts.
3. have a 'buffer' page, so that the person is not just dropped unceremoniously into OBOB without any notice of where they are headded.
this means extra work for the programers. and extra work doesn't usually come cheep.

the easier way to handle this and to get a larger response is rediculously simple:
copy your post to General Theology!

I am on the fence about this, as there are pros and cons for both responses and I don't have as much invested in the forum as others do, or for as long. However, I did mention in another thread where this issue came up that it would be helpful if, when clicking on a thread link, one would be informed about which forum they are being directed to. There have been similar threads started on more than one forum, sometimes by the same person. I click on one of the links, but then have to scroll up to find out which forum it is. The forum name should appear with a link, either with the thread title or separately on the page. Kind of a header that appears on every page.

Recently I assumed the thread link I clicked was to a particular forum and I didn't check, so of course it was a different forum. I actually went in and edited my response to be more appropriate to that forum. So now I just constantly check. But I can see where others don't or won't.

Being relatively fresh into this Catholic thing, and finally finding a place where I feel like I can have respite (here and Salt Of The Earth), I'd rather not open this up to the insolence of the non-Catholics on this board. We all know how copious such behavior is outside these areas.

Just have to tell them they are in a Catholic area. If they continue, just hit the button.

I know, I just wonder how faithfully everyone in OBOB will follow that simple protocol? I know in other areas people tend not to, and just try to engage head-to-head the whole time. It all turns into an ugly mess and an otherwise good thread (and it's OP) end up paying the price.

That's all I'm worried about.

Well, that and the inevitable fatigue from a barrage of lost CFers wandering in here and berating us.

That's all. :p

also having heretics post here gives us something to rally against :)

helps build unity in OBOB :)

me and Cosmic do not always agree on every issue, but it sure is fun telling a Fundamentalist to shut up, that is something me and Cosmic do together

Oh I understand. I'm not going to fight hard for this one because a lot of posters tend to engage them when they shouldn't. I have no interest in engaging anticatholic nonsense. I can go to GT for that hot mess.
