1) Well-known passages from the Apostle Paul seem to indicate that women are not to have authority over men or even speak in church.

2) God created the man first, then the woman.

3) Every author of Scripture (that we know of) is a man.

4) All of Christ's Apostles were men.

5) Christ himself is a man, and God is clearly described as masculine in Scripture.

Thoughts?

From a human viewpoint, it would appear to be the case. However, from God’s overall view? No. There’s an appearance of imbalance because we often don’t witness the full consequences of our actions with respect to how we treat other people until after we die.

We are all subject to authority in this life and the next, and will all be judged according to what we’ve done with whatever lot in life we were given. Thus, Jesus’ parable concerning the talents.

Jesus said that he that would be the greatest among you, let him be the greatest servant. I suppose this also applies to men and how they conduct themselves with women. Chivalry has its place.

Ephesians 5:21-33 describes how both men and women ought to conduct themselves in a marriage, and specifically addresses inherent weaknesses of both sexes. If we follow these directives, we fulfill our intended purpose which is to be transformed into the image of Jesus.

Most people do not see beyond the carnal realm and get caught up with the battle of the sexes. This goes along the same lines as Christians who pursue titles and ministries named after themselves, thinking they’re so high up with God, when in reality they are carnal and setting themselves up to fall flat on their faces.

If God is not a respecter of persons (Acts 10:34) and loves the poor as much as the rich, or the wise over the humble, then for sure he doesn’t love men more than women.

Apparently God didn't think so. If it wasn't for women there wouldn't be a man alive to even posit the query.

As for the scriptures and all being male oriented, I think it behooves us to recall the patriarchy that was in power at the time, the politic, had everything to do with that. God does not discriminate.

As to the masculine pronouns used to describe God, remember, God is a spirit. Genderless. Therefore those pronouns are also part of the human patriarchal supposition. God is not a man that he should lie.

God is a spirit.

God gave His instructions to men. God held all men accountable to Him for these instructions. Man, according to scripture, is the head of the household, and thus held accountable. God formed man from the dust of the earth, gave him instructions, commandments. God made woman from the flesh of man, but gave her no instructions or commandments. What do you think? Does God depend on man the most, or woman?

OK so here's my question: what do you make of the Apostle Paul's statements about women?

OK so here's my question: what do you make of the Apostle Paul's statements about women?
Paul's remarks were invoking the law. Remember, he was a Pharisee first. His letters to his churches weren't to say God would never give his word to women to deliver to the world. Rather, his remarks about women remaining quiet in church concerned the segregation that occurred in temple at the time. Men separated from women so that they were not distracted by one another.
As was the custom if a woman didn't understand what was being said she'd lean to her husband to explain. The directive therefore was that that should not occur in church/temple. Rather, women should wait until they were in private to make their inquiry and not disrupt the service.

Wouldn't it be odd for Paul to say in a different passage that all are one in Christ Jesus if he were to be saying in a different passage that women were inferior?

And yet, Christ gave the highest commendations to Mary Magdalene.....must be a glitch...

It's kind of amazing how those that try to make women equal to men always seem to try and point out: "you know, the words offered by Paul were certainly influenced by the politics and such of the 'time'."

What do you suppose that the politics and such of that time were 'based' upon? Where do you suppose the Jews learned their behavior from as concerns the 'place' of men and women?

The Bible clearly states that because of Eve's deception, part of her punishment was that she would be under the 'rule' of her husband: Adam. He would 'rule' over her.

And I find nothing throughout the rest of the Bible in it's entirety that alters this format. Not a 'single' change from the beginning. Even the NT indicates everything it offers from this perspective. Not according to mere 'customs' of the people. But those ''customs'' being formed by the very words offered in the Bible.

God is the Head of Christ, as Christ is the Head of man, as man is the Head of woman. Isn't this what the Bible 'states'?

So is it really up to us to debate the issue? If we claim to be believers in the Bible: God's Word, is there any room for debate if God's Word clearly states that man is the Head of woman? Exactly what is there to debate other than what the word "Head" represents?

Blessings,

MEC

I believe that male and females were created for different roles. The male is to lead, the woman to follow. This doesn't mean that the women is inferior. We just have different roles. Husbands are called to love their wives as Christ loved the church. Do you have any idea how big of a task that is? Why bother if women are just, well, inferior creatures.

Does God depend on man the most, or woman?

God doesn't depend on anyone. He is God.

The Bible clearly states that because of Eve's deception, part of her punishment was that she would be under the 'rule' of her husband: Adam. He would 'rule' over her.

The curse has been reversed by Christ, just as death has been trampled.

Is it possible that they were made for an inferior theological function, much as angels have an inferior function to an archangel?
Who taught Timothy Torah? Who taught Apollos? Who was Phoebe and what authority did Paul give her? Who was Junius that she was esteemed among the apostles? Who were the three daughters that they prophesied to the church? There are others mentioned.
Who was Deborah, that she judged all of Israel for 40 yrs?

Yeah, no, women are not inferior in function.

However, should women be counseling men or men be counseling women? Nope. Especially not in that time period when the Gentiles were coming out of the pagan religions where, in some, sexual promiscuity was actually doctrine.
What are the temptations in these situations? Can there be an appearance of evil even where there isn't evil?
Paul says the older women should be teaching (counseling) the younger women, not the men, or the woman's own husband.

A very amusing explanation to dump Paul's instructions! Women are superior to men is some aspects for raising the family when led by men.

I guess I'd like an explanation of the statements of Paul regarding women. And, I'd like an explanation of the curse after the Fall which someone else on this thread mentioned. For the sake of clarity I'll quote the relevant passages:

"11 A woman must quietly receive instruction with entire submissiveness. 12 But I do not allow a woman to teach or exercise authority over a man, but to remain quiet. 13 For it was Adam who was first created, and then Eve. 14 And it was not Adam who was deceived, but the woman being deceived, fell into transgression." 1 Tim. 2:11-14 (NASB)

"34 The women are to keep silent in the churches; for they are not permitted to speak, but are to subject themselves, just as the Law also says. 35 If they desire to learn anything, let them ask their own husbands at home; for it is improper for a woman to speak in church." 1 Cor. 14:34-35 (NASB)

"6 To the woman He said,
“I will greatly multiply
Your pain in childbirth,
In pain you will bring forth children;
Yet your desire will be for your husband,
And he will rule over you.”" Gen. 3:6 (NASB)

Well if they're lower in God's hierarchy then they're inferior in a certain sense, right?
Not in my opinion, just like a child is not inferior to its parents, yet lower in 'rank'.

There is no sex differentiation in heaven, and therefore, men and women are equal there. That is not applicable on earth where people bear children. You don't have to resort to complex methods to understand simple and straight forward inspired words of God!

Everyone doesn't seem to be equal in heaven: that's why there are angels, at least one archangel, cherubim, etc.

These type remarks also fail to recall in the beginning God created both the man and woman in his image and in his likeness so that both would be one flesh.
Later it was the man who was led by the woman to disobey God's ordinance to not gain knowledge from the tree our omniscient God planted into paradise. And after that the man was given authority over the woman. When prior to that eating thereof, he did not exercise his own conscience and disobey the woman. Because neither were possessed of the knowledge of right or wrong.

Subsequently, in later passages it isn't what the scriptures say in that it is what certain men claim they say when they state that they should have dominance over women by God's decree. Often they cite Ephesians 5:22 in order to do this, failing to read the context of all of Paul's writings concerning women while disregarding what Jesus demonstrated and taught. Even when he himself had women in his company most of his ministry. And they fail to read 1 Peter 2:13.

They also fail to realize Jesus, who could have called a legion of angels to his defense when the temple guards and Roman soldiers came to put him under arrest, instead submitted to their authority because of the mission he knew he had to fulfill.
1 Peter 2:23. This didn't say Jesus was then inferior to those authorities. It said that he was choosing to fulfill his roll for the good of the world's people.
And finally, those who use the scriptures to claim they should rule over women fail to take into account not only the whole of Christ's teachings but also 1 Peter 5:5, All of you be submissive to one another, and be clothed with humility: for God resists the proud, and gives grace to the humble.
As well as Jesus' wisdom wherein he said, Whosoever will be chief among you, let him be your servant. Matthew 20:27.

Therefore, when Christians say they obey the teachings and emulate the example of Christ they should recall that before claiming they believe because Jesus taught that women are inferior to men.
