Fat Barbie ... or should we say plump ... or curvy?

From the "Curvy" files: Barbie's Got a New Body | Time

Yes, plump. Barbie’s got a new body. Three new bodies, actually: petite, tall and curvy, in Mattel’s exhaustively debated lexicon, and beginning Jan. 28 they will be sold alongside the original busty, thin-waisted form on Barbie.com. They’ll all be called Barbie, but it’s the curvy one—with meat on her thighs and a protruding tummy and behind—that marks the most startling change to the most infamous body in the world.

It’s a massive risk for Mattel. Barbie is more than just a doll. The brand does $1 billion in sales across more than 150 countries annually, and 92% of American girls ages 3 to 12 have owned a Barbie, thanks in part to her affordable $10 price tag. She’s been the global symbol of a certain kind of American beauty for generations, with brand recognition that’s up there with Mickey Mouse. M.G. Lord, a Barbie biographer, once said she was designed “to teach women what—for better or worse—is expected of them in society.”

Genius, actually -- once you realize that the old Barbie clothes and accessories won't fit on the newer ones, thus requiring customers to buy her a whole new wardrobe...

Is that real? I imagine they will catch flak from groups for being insensitive.

Maybe just call her "realistic barbie," ...
Well, kinda ...

Original Barbie is fairly typical of teen girls. Filling out happens some time later after they've reached their adult height. I suppose we could call the new Barbie, "Adult Barbie" ... for which she is perhaps typical.

Original barbie would be over 7 feet tall, if her proportions are correct.

Of course Ken will probably still only come in tall, well built models..

We talk about girls not developing unrealistic ideas about their bodies, shouldn't we do the same for boys? You'd just be sending the message that girls are pretty no matter what they look like and that men still need a type to look good, yet when these girls start dating in middle/high school they'll be let down when they find out the jock and other traditionally attractive boys do not find them attractive.

Also waiting for the feminists to complain that that the curvy Barbie isn't fat enough, lol.

This is a world where a mom got upset with a sales associate who offered up a pair of spanx to her 13 year old daughter, who was trying on a formal dress (one she didn't want, but was trying on for mom) to help smooth out the lines of the dress.

The 13 year old was no twig, but the sales associate was doing her job in upselling and selling accessories. Mom had a fit and decided to call the manager (after, of course, posting all about it on Facebook!) "Her body is just fine the way it is!"

So...having curvy barbie doesn't really mean anything in the grand scheme of things if you ask me.
