Try to get prenatal care at a Planned Parenthood, in spite of the name. Maybe the state clinics could provide more services if they got the funding that the state is giving to Planned Parenthood. Does Planned Parenthood provide treatment for HIV positive patients or just diagnose them and give them a few condoms and say "be careful".

As a matter of fact, manyPP centers provide HIV testing, some of which with results as quick as 20 minutes, as well as individual and group counseling, and referrals to specialists for treatment... many of these services are cheap, and in some cases, free.

Does that answer your question?

No, testing is the cheapest part and easiest part of the diagnosis. I asked what do they do if someone tests positive? Basically say "sorry guy, here are some condoms...don't spread it"....and a pamphlet of places to call to be seen 6 months from now since you will be considered a "new patient"? This is in comparison to being tested at a place that actually starts your treatment immediately since you are already a patient since you got the diagnosis with them.

B-b-but... Planned Parenthood! Baby parts videos!

For me, I'm personally a pro-choice person...however, I try to at least understand the other side's perspective. They're vehemently against abortion, so the fact that planned parenthood provides other valuable services besides abortion doesn't cancel that out in their mind...so I think that they think those other services are a good thing, but prefer that they be provided by other entity that doesn't also provide abortions.

However, as I made reference to earlier, I think it'd be tough to fill that gap.

They view abortion as something that's just as detrimental/evil as we'd view a sexual predator. So imagine for a moment, that you found out there was a sexual predator was living in your neighborhood. Your first thought would obviously be "I don't want that person living by me or my family", if you were told that predator gave out 20 scholarships per year to low income kids, would that change your mind?...if were told that person created a non-profit foundation to assist the elderly, would that change your mind? Doubtful...the fact of the matter is, no matter how many other good things or services that person provided, you'd have a hard time getting past the fact that they were a sexual predator and wouldn't want them living by you or your family.

That's essentially how the other side feels about abortion. In their minds, a handful of good things aren't going to cancel out, what they feel, is one of the most evil things on the planet.

Treatment is a separate issue, though. The funding under discussion is specifically prevention related.

Unlike a sexual predator, a person choosing to have an abortion does not seek out to prey on someone nor do they seek to corrupt innocence with their action.

People who go so far in their beliefs that they would endanger others (defunding clinics that offer vital services for one, taking away a personal choice from others for another) are wrong.

They're welcome to believe what they want, but to strip people of their choices and remove resources from them and others is a violation of the rights of the other people. If someone does not want an abortion and thinks they are wrong, they are 100% welcome to never get one. They should never try to force someone else's hand.

I'm "anti-abortion". That doesn't mean I lose all sense of perspective. I see your point, however I question your analogy. HIV preventing is far more on point to the stated concerns of "pro-life" people than a scholarship would be to those concerned about sexual abuse.

Either way, I must admit to being somewhat baffled by the animosity towards PP itself. People seem to think that if PP vanished today, abortions would stop tomorrow. I contend the blame is going to the wrong place, and stopping the good stuff PP unarguably does do seems purely out of spite. IMHO.

Following the advice of the bishops:.

Huh. Texas actually is about 28% Catholic. It's only about 21% Baptist. I had no idea.

Be that as it may, government leaders ought not be paying too much attention to religious leaders.

Testing is NOT prevention. It is diagnostic. What "prevention" are they talking about?

Testing is a key component of prevention. As I said upthread, nobody gets treated without first being tested.

What part of "prevention" is so hard to understand? Testing is diagnostic and NOT prevention and treatment is NOT prevention either. The title of this thread is that Texas cuts the PREVENTION funds to Planned Parenthood and everyone wanted to say that the state of Texas was evil for not wanting to participate in the PREVENTION of this disease. PREVENTION is simply avoiding risky behaviors which is primarily not doing IV drugs and to not have sex with multiple partners. THAT is the only PREVENTION program that really exists for HIV. There is no such thing as "safe sex" beyond true monogamy (with both being each others ONLY sexual partner) ... even "safer sex" which involves using a condom isn't a true prevention program since it doesn't guarantee no transmission. Do you really believe that Planned Parenthood is actually pushing "monogamy" and abstinence? or that it costs $600,000 dollars a year to do that?

And LO and BeHold! Here is where you can still go for free or low cost HIV and STD testing in Houston (the only city affected by the cancellation of this grant)....no appointment needed. 6 centers that do the very same thing (Planned Parenthood only has 3 locations and they are in the same neighborhoods). http://www.saferstdtesting.com/free-std-testing/free-std-testing-houston-tx So now everyone can sleep easier. The solution already exists. And nobody is going to have to go without being tested if they want to be tested. Evil Texas already provides more service centers than Planned Parenthood did.

Where do any of those articles say anything relevant to PP's involvement in HIV screening? Maybe direct quote?
It shows the US bishops have repeatedly and consistently called for the defunding of Planned Parenthood since at least 2013, probably further back than that.

So, as a Catholic, I view this as a good thing.

These Planned Parenthoods aren't being forcibly closed, they're being forced to fund themselves, like most any other doctor or clinic. What makes Planned Parenthood such a sacred cow that they must receive government funding?

They're providing an essential service, so they should receive funds to continue it.

I also think that any clinic providing other essential services should be supported by the government. I think the government should take a much more active role in supporting and promoting the health of its population.

They better pay attention to voters, and 28% Catholic plus 21% Baptist is 49% of the population. Even if only half tow the line on abortion, that still almost a quarter of the population.

But I was more referring to my own reasons for being against PP, which I was giving to a fellow Catholic who hopefully respects the concept of following the Bishops of the Church.

Thanks for the update. It's like I was saying, the DOH is probably more prolific than the PP anyway. They certainly are in my state: every major city has a Department of Health in it. Whereas we have two Planned Parenthood in the entire state. The DOH isn't the most efficient organization (it's a government agency, after all), but it's cheap and easily accessible.

I also think that any clinic providing other essential services should be supported by the government. I think the government should take a much more active role in supporting and promoting the health of its population.

It is a service already provided for by the state facilities in more locations. It is redundant to pay a private organization to preform a service that is already being provided and maybe it will free up the funds to open more DOH locations to service an even larger population. (note, the planned parenthood locations in Houston are in areas already getting service from the DOH). The indigent care system in Houston is actually very good and they get quality care.
