The "official" name of the season is winter. Christmas is not a season, it is one day. Thanksgiving is an historically American holiday but every year out becomes less and less relevant due to your Christian holiday taking up the entire last quarter of the year with just about every major company in the country displaying Christmas decorations and playing Christmas music everywhere you go.

Thanksgiving is the second largest holiday, at least in America. It's like a 'semi Christmas' really, as far as it's importance. It's right behind Christmas- I wonder why that is?

They are making, blatantly and with full knowledge, the insinuation. It is not arbitrary- is that what you are expecting conservatives to believe- that it is arbitrary?
Hey, if you think they're doing it on purpose, then there is a very simple solution in that you just don't buy coffee from Starbucks. How's that for a solution?

Just noting that 99% of all alleged Christmas anything we see out there in the public sphere and the music we hear on the radio has nothing to do with the actual religious significance of the holiday. Most atheists even celebrate Christmas in the exact same manner as most Christians out there do- secularly. You all decorate your homes, give gifts, eat tons of food, watch crappy Hallmark movies, and spend time with family. There is little to no difference in how most Christians and non-Christians in America celebrate (and we all know many non-Christians DO actually celebrate it as a secular holiday).

Very few give to the poor and spend time in church partaking of the Eucharist focusing on what makes it a true holy day. And- Christmas is a season to some of us- one that doesn't occur during the Nativity Fast (what you all call Advent)- but rather for twelve days after until Theophany.

LOL Oh come now. Christmas is a season, with one day being the Apex. My favorite radio station is already playing Christmas songs. It really gets me in the mood. I've already made out my Christmas list. At Thanksgiving, my family will draw names to see who we will buy a gift for.

Easter, celebrating the Resurrection of Christ, is the holiest day for Christians. It's not His birth but His rebirth that is of importance - yet you put Christmas and Thanksgiving ahead of Easter?

Meh.
In technicality, but Christmas still stands as the greatest holiday of the year. Easter is simply more accurate in the timing- otherwise, it's mostly the bunny and candy filled baskets.

It's not arbitrary, it's imaginary.

I expect conservatives to deal with the real world, not the imagined outrage du jour.

Once again, and despite past experience, I am disappointed.

I don't think we are trying to.

However there is a tiny minority of anti-theists who are trying to quash the predominant culture i.e. in their war against Christmas, and they have made some inroads. They have confused people by conflating government establishment of religion with common culture.

And you honestly think Starbucks is part of this conspiracy?

Speak for yourself. In Orthodoxy- PASCHA is THE feast of feasts and THE holy day. To us- it isn't about bunnies and candy in the slightest. PASCHA is a waaaay bigger deal to all of us than Christmas. WAAAY BIGGER. (And that definitely includes every single Orthodox Christian living in the Americas.)

For Orthodox Christians, Pascha (Easter) is the feast of feasts--it is definitely the top holy day in our Church. However, the Nativity (Christmas) is a very important one as well, since the Son of God became incarnate as a human being (God and Man). There would have been no Pascha (Easter) if He had not become incarnate first. Pascha and Christmas are the two 40 day fasts (from meat and dairy) in the Orthodox Church. We have other fasts as well, but these are the two longest fasting periods we have.

I don't see how passover is more important for Jews than Easter. Easter is the basis for all Christianity !!

1 Corinthians 15:1-4 - Easter is in the KJB Acts 12:4 KJV - And when he had apprehended him, he put him in prison, and delivered him to four quaternions of soldiers to keep him: intending after Easter to bring him forth to the people.

I've noticed an awful lot of churches in the US shut down on Christmas. So, if you're only talking about how many people in the US only celebrate a secular holiday they call Christmas, then I suppose it may be more important to many. However, I'd be careful, were I you, to make sure you don't lump all Protestants in together on that one. I know plenty around here that would take issue with your assertion that Christmas is more important.

In Orthodox Christianity (and among Christians in every language besides English and German), this holiday is never called Easter, but Pascha. Pascha is the appropriate term.

That is certainly correct! If an Orthodox parish holds all the services during Holy Week, it is something like 15 or 16 services in 10 days. I am going to try and take Holy Week off so that I can attend all the services this year.

It was Christ's crucifixion and resurrection that saved us. That should be way more important than His birth, though that is certainly a feast day as well.

It's a blessing to be able to do that. My husband does that every year, and my previous work schedule made it possible to attend many of the services. I hope you'll be able to get the time off!

If it's only about the Easter bunny and candy'-filled baskets, then that is by your choice. I guess Christmas shouldn't be important either. After all, it is all about Santa Claus, snowmen, Christmas trees, presents and being with your family. In fact, at least some churches may cancel Sunday services next year when Christmas falls on Sunday.
